i think I put this in the wrong section but does anyone know if the Biltmore house is posted and/or has metal detectors? Inquiring minds want to know

Thanks

Please note that the following are prohibited in Biltmore House:
  • Food and drink
  • Pets (except service animals)
  • Weapons
  • Video recording and sketching
  • Photography and cell phone use that interferes with the enjoyment of other guests. See full photo policy.
For your safety and the protection of this historic home, all bags, packages, and boxes will be inspected by security personnel upon entry. We reserve the right to refuse admission for any bag, parcel, or other item.

I just asked if they search bags if you stay at their on-property lodging.

So no metal detectors, just bag inspection.
Hmmm

Anyone been recently?

Found a post online saying they installed metal detectors in August of 2018. Well dang

Carry a Glock 7. It passes through metal detectors and can shoot through a school.

Biltmore walls may be thicker.

As an aside my wife carries in a ccw purse that has a side zipper to access the weapon. She has gone to many an event, plopped her purse down with the 2 top compartments held open, had it searched and handed back.

We did chuckle when one time they refused to let her in with the pack of gum they found so she had to throw that away.

Rightly so in my opinion!

I was there 2 years ago and they didn’t search the backpack that I always carry

Was there two years ago, no detectors or searching. I like the place but it's way to expensive for what it is.

Every time I see an advert I comment that it should be half to get twice the traffic. Add the consessions and they make more...

We went last year (JUL 2017) and I would have sworn there were metal detectors at the house. Gardens/stable shops/village/winery had no security. Didn't carry because I knew I would be doing wine tastings that day.

They still have a policy against flash photography even though LED flash does not contain UV light.

It's been a few years since I was last there (2014). If my memory serves me correctly, when purchasing a ticket at the gate after a certain time (I think 3:30pm) that ticket will also be valid for the following day. It's not advertised but I think they call it a twilight ticket. I've used that both times I've visited to extend it into two days.

Then they need to double the price. Traffic is freaking ridiculous around there.

This is so true. Besides an already CF of an intersection designed by the DOT, throw in a bunch of tourists that are trying to figure out what the hell is going on and you have the perfect storm.

Wait until they are putting up the Christmas Tree. It often backs up for miles on I40 as people try to get there.

Typical price is $75 - $85 for daytime admission.

We went to see the Chihuly glass exhibit that we have seen in several other places.

They DO have metal detectors set up and a very rudimentary bag search. Didn’t see them make anyone throw anything out.

The metal detectors were a joke. They stopped no one. People carried their bags, cameras, etc through them, no putting your wallet/phone/keys in a tray or anything like that. I’m confident I could’ve carried my Glock 43 or 19 in there. I did have a knife on me though so I had that at least.

Honestly someone with a knife could do more financial damage slashing tapestries, paintings (they have two Renoirs that are $$$$$$$$) and that type of thing

They have an entire wall of Durer etchings plus his full Triumphal Arch etching. There is a lot more than just the Renoirs in there. But you are right, that place is full of stuff that could never be replaced. Did you notice the walls of the room after the dining room? Hand stamped leather.

I have carried there before. They look in bags, but they don't strip search, and I don't recall there being any wands.

I ALWAYS have at least a knife with me.

And ceramic knives, by the way, won't bother a metal detector at all. Thoroughly tested that myself in many places, including with the Marine security at Kings Bay submarine facility, where they happily wanded my knives for me to test them.

My wife and my kids all have ceramic pocket knives. And I keep several on hand just in case one is lost or broken.

@RetiredUSNChief I think I remember you posting about ceramic knives previously. Could you tell us about them again? Thanks!

Yeah...go to Amazon and search "ceramic knives".

There's a decent selection of ceramic kitchen knives, as well as some folders.

I have a pile of these, which come 4 for $10:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01F8FN2YW/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Nice little folders and yes...they're every bit as sharp as you'd expect ceramic blades to be. Sharp enough to shave the hair on your arm in one pass. The only metal in these is the post and screw holding the blade in. (I don't count that stupid lanyard...I take it off.)

Gave this out as a gift:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y238GM2/ref=od_aui_detailpages00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

They're dirt cheap, they're razor sharp, and they're metal free (except for the folders I described above). Unless you're going through a TSA body scanner, they're perfect concealable defense weapons.
