HUNTERSVILLE, NC — A black bear was spotted Thursday morning in Huntersville, according to police.

The bear sighting was in the area of Northcross Drive and Bridgeford Ln.

"Please ensure your trash is away and pet food is not left out," Huntersville Police Department said in a social media post. "Please DO NOT approach the bear."

That's a mile from me. All I can say is, cool!

My neighbor saw one in my back yard last week. She said she couldn't tell what it was until it stood up.

I'm always amused at how people react to bear sightings. I see it on the news from places like Greenville SC and Spartenburg, but it really doesn't make the news here it is such a common occurrence.

This year we have two females with cubs that frequent our yard. One has 2 cubs, had 3 but one was killed, and we've seen her a number of times. The other had 2 yearling cubs, and would come around as often, but on different days. She has since booted the yearling cubs out to forage on their own, and they have shown up a time or two alone. The wife was sitting on the lower deck the other day, and one of them just came up the stairs onto the deck, maybe 15 feet from the wife.

Plus we have an older rescue Plott Hound (picture on left) who had most likely been a bear hunter before we got him, and he wants a piece of the bears if he happens to be outside, creating some intense scenes. I threw a 10' piece of drain pipe at one bear which caused it to retreat so I could get the dog in. Wife was standing by with pistol if it came to that.

At least one small dog in the area has been killed by the bear with small cubs so far this year. One woman saved her little dog which the bear had in its mouth by running after it and kicking it in the butt, which caused the bear to drop the dog. The dog did survive after a trip to the emergency vet.

I don't want to shot any of these bears, and have found that one of these aerosol can air-horns are very effective in encouraging them to move along. First time I used it, I didn't have ear protection, big mistake, so now there is a pair of ear protectors kept with the air-horn.

No food goes into the trash, until trash day. Food waste that would smell is kept in freezer until trash day.

I've never had bear, I'll bring beer to the BBQ if anyone would be willing to share a plate.

In addition to being knows as "beer city", Asheville could also be called "bear city".

I know the study done several years ago found that yearling cub in Asheville weighed 150+ pounds, while a yearling cub in the wild, weighed about 65 pounds. They have captured a couple of male's that they couldn't collar as they didn't have a big enough collar.

I have a big old gray face male that comes through my yard all the time. He's carved a big slot on one of my worn-out pine trees 9' above grade going for the bugs.
I'm pretty sure he's the same one that dug up a yellow jacket nest in my yard and ate it.
He's been around here at least 10 years. Never bothers anything, never goes after pets or any mischievousness. All he wants to do is scratch the trees and power poles and eat bugs.

Bear took out an apparent huge yellow jacket nest on a bank behind the house years ago. I was looking at the damage it had done to a bird feeder and kept hearing this buzzing coming from a nearby hole. The hole was big enough that two basketballs could fit easily. I vacated the area, as unlike a bear I want nothing to do with yellow jackets.

.

the bear reactions have been much more subdued than the coyote "problem" we have in clemmons. bunch of yuppie city transplants arguing online because they "read" something on the net and became instant experts on wildlife. guy offering to hunt them from neighboring davie county caused an uproar because ... you know....guns and stuff.

Yea, we got coyotes also. They sure can raise a ruckus late at night. Grandson has captured several on a game camera he has setup in the woods behind their house. I've seen one late at night walking my dog, who was telling me something was down the road. Shined my flashlight down the road and saw it running up another driveway.

There was an article in the paper today where a woman was complaining that her "snowbird" neighbors that live here part time and winter in Florida was putting out big piles of bird seed for the bears, causing a problem for the whole neighborhood.

Someone needs to tell them that "a fed bear is a dead bear" but they probably don't care, just want pictures to post for family about living in the wild.

there was one behind an arborvitae in front of my house (feeding on a rabbit) that growled at me as i took my dog out. by the time i snatched up my dog and grabbed the pistol, hed taken off - but im a little more careful these days (my dogs so little and her leash so long shed make a good target before id have a chance to react)

i cant believe the people that actually try to feed the wildlife - not just putting out bird feeders etc - but actually leaving dog food out to try and feed them.

I was talking to a neighbor up in W. Jeff over the weekend. He spotted a large black bear on his property last month. Then proceeded to put out food for it. Then was awoken one night by the cubs tearing up his deck and bird feeder. Now he has decided not to feed the bears anymore.

Guess that's what happens when people from Miami move to the woods.

Some one in the Goldston area of Chatham got some game cam pics of three bears during last years deer season. I would love the opportunity to harvest a bear, and a wild boar as well.

Not sure what to make of the recent proliferation of bear sightings. One in Johnston County, one in Wake Forest. Not sure if there are more of them or if they are just being sighted more.

There was a bear last year in Pittsboro area walking down a fairway of the disc golf course at Rock Ridge Park. Wonder what he would have done if a disc came out of nowhere and smacked him?
