My son was called out on a black bear sighting call last night. Someone saw and took pictures of a mature black bear in a Waxhaw neighborhood. He spent a couple of hours looking for him, but...in his words...it appears Yogi has eluded the Ranger once again.

BOLO if you live in the Waxhaw area. Don't leave food or smelly trash outside.

It doesn't sound like the bear is a serious threat, just sort of confused as to where he's supposed to be due to the volume of construction and habitat loss in the area. Finding a food source may encourage him to stay around, tho, and become a nuisance bear. Best to encourage him on his way.

County LE communications is having a good time with this, btw.

That was my son's mission last night, but he was worried that if things went sideways his handcuffs wouldn't be big enough.

It will make great news when they comment, "but bears are supposed to be in the mountains." Uhhm, not really. The state is changing the management of bear seasons to try and get more hunting. The population has really gone up in recent years.

That has already been said, at least by some of the residents with whom he spoke. He told them exactly the same thing you posted, along with the fact that all the new development that everyone seems to want is pushing them out of their habitat.

They are everywhere anymore! I've got them around the house in Catawba County, around the cabin in TN, and around my camper in Linville. I was at the camper last week and was coming by the McDonalds in Banner Elk at night and saw a movement out of the corner of my eye. It was a 400 lbs black bear eating trash at Mickey Ds! A friend of mine leases about 150 acres to hunt on on Linville. He set up game cameras and has recorded over 150 different bears almost in the town limits this year! Building up there has forced them out of the woods!

Someone hit a young bear the other night down here. Someone reported it as being a 'good sized bear'. The thing was very clearly a yearling.

Heard of them more near eastern Union , but heard of one near Buford's last year !

Keep a watch for Curt to offer some bear ear necklaces.

yeah, the world record black bears are from Craven County.

They are not easy to hunt. In Linville, they find 'em in the Gorge, and chase 'em all the way to the west side of 221 afore they get a shot.

Some of the biggest bears in NC on near the cost.

Locally, in Granville County, last year a trail cam spotted a mom and a few of her cubs, so it's not like they aren't around.

I am in Warren County and my friends get a few each year on cams. A buddy had one right outside the town limits of Warrenton at a feeder last year. Granted Warrenton is a spec of a town but still neat. They tend to travel up creek beds in the Piedmont and you would be amazed and the how many pass through an area.

Saw on WSOC some guy hit 1 on 485 near Matthews !! Hope he didn't kill it, but he said it ran into the woods.

I think the largest black bears in the world are found on the NC coast. I believe the standing record for largest one killed is still the one from the New Bern are back in the late 90's.
