Black-eyed Peas for New Year's Day?

I make hoppin' johns, collards and I have a standing rib roast on the smoker. She won't let me cook collards inside so outside over the turkey frier burner it is.

I ate whatever the Pit cooked there's in/with. Collards too. Best tasting veggies Ive eaten since I got the "ronna". I didnt lose my taste or smell but some things have tasted "funny".

The Pit isn't bad for a collection of leftist anti gunners.

Glad you 're doing better!

Thx. It's not as good as it used to be. Que was better when Ed Mitchell first ran the kitchen. We had a very memorable meal there a couple years ago. Everything was a home run. Not today but thats where my wife wanted to go. I'm going to the grocery store tomorrow and buying collards, BE peas, rice, bacon, onion and cider vinegar. Complete meal.

Black eyed peas and collard greens every time. As to what goes in with them ... well, whatever there is left that goes with them. Y'all do know where you are, don't you?😁

This thread reminds me of when my daughter who was around 15 at the time asked me if I liked The Black Eyed Peas.

I told her, “Sure. I don’t eat them that often but I think they’re good.”

She was talking about the band.🤣

Had black eyed peas tonight, with just bacon. Yum.

Well, at least there's two true southerners here.

I LOL'd, even though I'm a KS farm kid. It ain't a southern thing, it's a country thing. We ate the hell outta greens- collard, mustard & turnip. Grandma cooked 'em with bacon grease & diced green onions. Buddy took me to Chason's in Lumber Bridge years ago, shortly after I got to NC. Asked me what I thought of soul food. I'm like, what? That's country food.

Black-eyed peas cooked with ham, onion, garlic. Collards, pork roast and a little homemade cranberry sauce.

That there's a fella knows how to eat.

The wife always fixes black eyed peas (she just adds bacon grease to hers)hog jowl and fried cabbage for new years dinner.
Her family has eaten this traditional new years dinner for as far back as anyone can remember.
When my dad found out that my wife and I were continuing the tradition he went ballistic.
He said it was anti Christian Where he got that I don't know.
But if I wanted to piss him off I'd call and invite him to new year's dinner
I'm guessing the problem is wishing for "luck."

Throw in some country ham. Serve with collards(cut with some apple cider vinegar and red pepper flakes), angel biscuit, and chow chow.
I ain't heard anybody speak of angel biscuits in years! Granny would make a pone of angel bread, which is just one big biscuit in the cast iron. What is your recipe for them, if'n you don't mind.

Got (beautiful) collards and fresh black eyed peas cooking now. Lots of leftover protein from yesterday but no sides so I went to the store at 630 this a.m. and bought all the fixins.

Black eyes, mixed greens, brined bone in pork chops with spoon bread on the side

Sure, I've got two go-to biscuits.

If I have a day, I'll use angel biscuits, which I originally found in the Blackberry Farm(https://www.amazon.com/Blackberry-Farm-Cookbook-Seasons-Great/dp/0307407713 ) cookbook:

If I have to make it right away, I'll use this one(not angel biscuits):

Years ago I had a number of friends from New Orleans who would tell me that I really should have red beans and rice for New Years day. I picked up some red beans "in Cajun spices" at Food Lion to honor them. When it came time to cook, though, I remembered how many times New Orleans had been hit by hurricanes and all the problems that had ensued. Them red beans had not worked out so well for them ...... so I rummaged around the pantry and found some black-eyed peas and collards. Call me a weenie, but I just wasn't going to take the chance of another crummy year!
