I'm think of getting a muzzle loader barrel for my T/C Encore. Is it better to shoot real Black Powder or one of the substitutes?

Purist love black but can be hard to find. Just go to any Walmart for Pyrodex. Advantage to subs is not considered an explosive so easy to find. Both require cleaning.

The holy black is easy to find, just not at brick and mortar locations thanks to regulations. I haven't slowed down my black powder shooting one bit and I go through over 30lbs a year. If all you do is casual shooting or light plinking a hazmat shipping fee will send the price per lb way up. Order 15+lbs at the time and pool your order with others and it gets much much cheaper.

As for the real black, there are grades of quality just like in gasoline. Bottom end are regular Goex, Schutzen, Wano. Top end, Old Eynsford (Goex product) and Swiss.

If you wind up shooting subs, go with 777. As pointed out, you cannot neglect your cleaning.

Welcome to the addiction.

Hodgdon makes a pretty good substitute called TRIPLE SEVEN in FFFG, cleans up fairly easy. I shoot that and black powder, always been told to stay away from pyrodex.

Ed's has Hodgdon FFFG and the pellets in stock now.

I've shot pyrodex for years without issues. Pellets in my Old Army and RS in my Musketoon and Martini-Henry

Triple Seven or black. Clean as soon as you get home. Never a problem đź‘Ť
