So I get my very first level III+ plate yesterday. No idea what to expect. Well, two things were definitely unexpected.

1. OMG does this think weigh a lot. I want to say it's at eight pounds and that is just one plate.
2. I get the box handed to me from the fed ex guy. I look down and it says on the gadarn label, AR500 BODY ARMOR.

The last thing I want people along the way to know is that I have ordered body armor. I like my body armor like I like my sex toys....discreet.

Yep...
AR500 is at the top of the list for heavy.
You can try SAPPI plates, if you can find them, a little thicker but also lighter,
Then there is Angel Armor, which is light enough to float, but costs a lot- for 308 stand alone you are looking at roughly 550 per plate

8lb is right there at the top of the scale for normal 10x12 plates. Thankfully, there are some great budget options out there that weigh much less, are not steel, cost only a few bucks more (not 2-3x), and ship faster than AR500.

Not NIJ certified
LAPG level III plates test above their rating, more of a III+, only $89ea plus you can find coupons
Botach Battle Steel (poorly named, not steel) level IV multicurve $99ea
*its Botach so good luck with order fulfillment

NIJ certified
Hesco L210 $270/or when in stock at Kota

So on what occasions are you guys wearing body armor? Just wondering. I usually feel like I am over-prepared because I use a duty belt with lots of gear on it but I don't have body armor.

Just tell the FedEx driver it's the plates for your truck to protect the oil pan.

Before I felt the weight I thought it might make decent back armor in my motorcycle jacket. My thought is also if sht goes down, most of these gayboyz will shoot you in the back as opposed to facing you.

I wouldn't think a steel plate would make for good back protection on a bike. My Vanson back protector is hard on the outside but softer against my back.

good to see someone else that has great taste in leathers

Actually I getting ready to duplicate the fiberglass pistol / slotgun slug armor test. I don't have a shotgun unfortunately. Going to try 9mm, 45, and 300blk 245gr lead.View attachment 250111
Curious how this turns out! I’ve seen a few YT videos of this being done, it seems pretty simple.

Not on my life. I am ready to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States; my oath never expires. My point is if we need body armor I'm afraid its more than needing firearms. Back in the day the DI taught us if you run out of ammo charge the machine gun with your kbar.

What ever it takes. I'm ole fat and onery. I will do what ever it takes to preserve the democratic republic. The US is special for a reason;yea its mucked up at the moment but I have faith we will get through this bump in history.
