Book: D Day Through German Eyes

June 5 1944

Dear diary,

The Amerikaners are rumored to be headed this way, probably landing at Calais right under our heaviest guns. Stupid Yankees. I'll be back home in the Fatherland banging Frauleins left and right by Christmas time.

June 6 1944,

Dear diary,

Aw crap...

Something like this.... For a while anyway

I get it, the NAZIs were the bad guys in WW2, but Im interested in reading this and seeing how Germans felt about US (both us and US) invading their country etc.

Can someone who has read the book (only 12 bucks shipped!) or listened tell me if this is from a soldier's perspective or from a citizen etc?
I think that either way it'd be interesting to see how they felt about things.

I have no doubt that some/many Germans knew about what the NAZIs were doing, but Im also sure that many did NOT know what was going on.
Makes me wonder about folks like the guy portrayed in Band of Brothers - the American, born of German parents, that went to fight for Germany before US entered the war etc

Also, I have added that book to my Amazon wish-list. I dont know when I'll be able to get it and read it (the problem is more on the reading than acquiring), but eventually I will.

Technically we weren’t invading their country at this time. We were invading France which they had invaded and then occupied.

From the snippets I read when downloading this to my kindle AP it appears that this is a collection of interviews taken 10 years after the invasion of Normandy.

The man who took and compiled the interviews was a propoganda writer for the nazis and he had been a frontline soldier in WWI. That’s how he was able to get them to open up to him.

He claims he didn’t alter any of the interviews but since he was a propagandist I will take any emotions with a grain of salt.

I still plan on reading it soon because I think the perspective of the men and what they were facing is important.

Also, had hitler not been asleep at the time of the invasion with strict orders to not be awakened for anything I don’t think our invasion would have been successful. Hitler was the only one that could order reinforcements and tank movement.

I’m interested to see if the soldiers on the ground blamed him for not resupplying them and reinforcing them.

While you are right about us invading France, the idea still stands that we flew/shipped a few thousand miles to fight these guys...what did they think of us? What misconceptions did they have of the US military/Americans etc?

You bring up a good point about the author/compiler - what slant did he put on things or omit later?

Again, like you, I'll read it eventually.

Im coming up on WW2 in my class soon (well, about three weeks), always a favorite of mine and the students'

This was a Christmas gift. Im not far into it but really liking it so far.

I agree with your first paragraph. I read the first book’s entire sample; it was a soldier’s POV. Click the cover page art on Amazon and it’ll open the first chapter sample from a Weirmacht soldier covering in France when paratroopers start landing. Vividly describes his machine gun emplacement and how it was designed to defend against the exact attack that came. Would’ve been better with double the troops and more able bodied soldiers. Wow. I want the two books. You getting the hard copies? I think I want them in hard copy vs digital

Yes, its a paperback that has BOTH books into one.
Its like 13 or 17 bucks shipped on Amazon.

Again, Im not far into it, only 35 pages of 320, but I really like it!

I like the historical aspect; coming from a former infantryman (not that you have to be to enjoy history) I have a two fold interest. One: how the DDay invasion was seen from a non traditional POV and Two: warfare from an earlier generation and similarities vs differences.
