Preparation for fixing a Boyds Forest Camo Classic for RAR 5.56.

$250 delivered. Too high for amateur effort by their staff.

Action fit is fine but that's where it ends.

Much sanding marks covered in finish. Flat file marks in the curves covered in finish. Big flat spot filed in the oval grip cap area. Dents. Blisters in the finish. Loss of finish on recoil pad spacer. Much too thick in the action and forend. Much too heavy. Very fragile plastic trigger guard loop. Left finger groove 2 in longer than right.

Based on this one stock, I'll likely not be a repeat customer. 25 years ago their stuff was awesomeness.

It'll get a diet and thinning, metal trigger guard and refinished.

I too have been unimpressed with Boyds stocks. As @Sharps40 said, good fit to the action, but the one I had shouldered like a 2x6, and I’ve seen Mosins with a better finish. If you get one you like, good on ya.

How much weight were you able to cut off the stock?

RAR 5.56 scoped in factory Tupperware stock weighs 7 lbs 12 oz on my scale.

Boyds stock, prior to finishing the job mess made by Boyds employees, came in at 8 lbs 13 oz.

Current weight, scoped, in modified Boyds Forest camo laminated classic stock is 7 lbs 14 oz on my scale.

So, diet resulted in 15 oz lost weight (about 12, 13 %) and only 2 oz heavier than before.

Not perfect on looks but much better.

I ground Boyds logo off the buttpad. They get no credit on this one.

A good stk out of wood or fiberglass is labor intensive and nobody wants to do that kind of work anymore. Inletting done right is part art and part science. Ive got 2 identical B&C carbine stocks and one is correctly inletted and one is not. Some stk makers now have gone flat top, no inletting. My rifle smith wont do it and he has the machine tools to do it. Takes too much time and he's gettin' old.

I'm not planning to wait 29 more days to get a turd replaced with a turd. They have review to their inquiry for a week now, no response. I vote with my wallet now
How about contacting your bank card company? Most cards have buyer protection included.

Boyd's did sell the business to two of their managers in 2020.

That may explain a lot. If this is typical, they are not what they were in the beginning. But, the stock is done. Shame is I get 1 Christmas gift each year. This was it. I was instantly disappointed when I raised the lid.

Oh well, I've polished other turds too. None were presents though.

What was the reply when you contacted them?

Could have been sold in the Rapid Fire section, they show any defects and sell at reduced price.

Sorry to hear about your turd. I was pretty happy with mine but it is heavy and I traded out the trigger guard immediately. It’s sad that they didn’t get back to you. Glad you were able to make it better though. So not a total loss.
