We purchased a brisket at Harris Teeter for a little about $6.00 a pound a few weeks ago, cooked it with some spices etc for a long time, and it turned out fall apart great.
We stopped at Twins Market and they had brisket for around $7.00
Yesterday I was at Walmart and they had 17-18 pound briskets for just under $4.00.

What is the normal per pound price?
What should we look for when purchasing Brisket?

Price is going to very a lot depending on grade, demand, time of year..

About grades- https://www.thespruceeats.com/usda-beef-grades-1328658

Demand- https://www.beefmagazine.com/beef/beef-demand-holding-steady

time of year- https://talkbusiness.net/2019/11/beef-demand-is-up-ahead-of-the-holidays/

So it comes down to- how nice of meat is it, is everyone wanting it, do you need it right now? Kind of you can have 2 of the 3 but not all, lol. Best is to buy good meat when it's on sale and keep till you need it... up to a point.

Edit: It's kind like asking how much is a bottle of bourbon - they all might be called bourbon but that does not make them the same.

Walmart is usually cheapest. A local “meat market” is gonna be more expensive as they pay $4 a pound for example for it at restaurant supply, then they mark it up. One reason I’ll never buy a brisket from a local market. I called one here once and they wanted $9lb for one. The next week I got one at restaurant depot for less than $4/lb

I usually only see brisket flats at Teeter. I grabbed one last week to try my first pastrami. If I’m cooking brisket for brisket’s sake I’ll buy a whole brisket from Costco. They are usually priced decently and have some good size hunks of meat.

The brisket at Harris Teeter was about 18 inches long, 8 inches wide And 2 inches thick.
I might be a little off in the dimensions but it was packaged the same as the one at Walmart.

I picked up a brisket from a local grass feed beef last week and smoked it Saturday for sandwiches. Mighty good!

I’ve tried different grades over the years and I can’t tell a difference when I’m cooking them for 12 hours.

The only time I did see a difference was when I picked up a wagyu brisket and smoked it.

The real difference for it tho wasn’t the taste of the meat but the flavor and taste of the fat. It was like smoked butter.

And that is what low and slow was made for- take a cheaper cut of meat and make it tender and tasty. It takes a keen set of taste buds to tell the difference. And I don't got them, lol,
But if I can get Prime for just a bit more than Choice, I will take all the help I can get

Agreed. Buy the mediocre cuts trim them decently and cook well. They are fine. A ribeye or filet I might spend extra, but with a brisket I can overcome cheap meat with some good cooking.

Prime is the way. As mentioned above, lower grades can turn out great if done correctly but I find the prime has more wiggle room on execution and a more consistent end result. I normally buy by the case at sams. Less than 4$ per pound back in September.

I was thinking that stuff was more like $50 / lb.
Other cuts are that much or higher.

I haven’t looked in awhile but based on what prime is going for normally right now wagyu brisket is probably $10 a pound now.

My wife has an "in" at a local store, she gets them for about $2/pound. She won't pay sticker prices, and given how many people we have to feed, we'd go broke if we did pay sticker price for protein.
