Wednesday night there was a report of a big fight at Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach. It was also said that there were shots fired. This happened during the fireworks display. A lot of panic and people running and hiding. Police said there were no shots fired, no guns. They were in fact Tweeting this shortly after they arrived on the scene. No guns, no shooter, it's OK.

Police are taking a lot of heat and being accused of covering up the truth. Can't have any more reports of shooting and violence around here, it will keep the tourists dollars away. Police have stated that the time of the first call and their arrival was 3 minutes. That sounds pretty fast. But, we all know how much damage and carnage can be done in 3 minutes. It is your duty to protect yourself, not rely on the police. But, we already know that.

Just about 3 weeks ago there was a shooting near Ripley's Believe It Or Not on Ocean Blvd and about the same time another shooting at a nearby hotel. Folks, Myrtle Beach ain't what it used to be, it's gotten bad. Local officials try to keep it quiet so as not to keep tourists from coming.

Just this week an 11 year old girl was bitten by a shark near the 14th Ave pier. The girl and her mom saw that it was a shark. The paramedics and media are calling it "an aquatic animal bite". If tourists thought there might be sharks in the water, they may not bring their money. If you walk out on any pier around here you'll see sharks swimming around less than 100 yards from where people are playing in the water. Sharks live in the ocean, you have entered their house, they live there.

If you must come to the Grand Strand area, use extreme caution and be very aware of your surroundings. Some friends were at Broadway at the Beach Wednesday night and they said things just didn't feel right. They decided they had better follow their feelings and leave. They were leaving when it all started. If it doesn't look or feel right, get out.

Doesn't really impress me, went to MB once not knowing it was black bike week (stupid me). Took the hint and have never been back...

I used to live in Ft. Lauderdale and spring break taught me when and where to go and not go.....Same with MB....

We went there 4 years ago. Stayed north of the tourist area but still within a good walk. No issues, after 5pm we stayed to the north.

Still carried while not on the beach/water.

We always go the week or two before Memorial Day weekend and stay at the Island Vista. It's a lot less crowded at that time. My father-in-law used to own a condo at Ocean Dunes in the 90's - early 2000's. We used to stay there for a week in July or August before he sold it at the height of the market. It was way better back then.

I was sad the last time I went to Myrtle. It was dangerous. I am not exaggerating, it was nothing but thugs and hookers (or what looked to be) after 9-9:30pm. It just felt unsafe after dark. It saddens me because this was one of the most fun places I had been when I was younger.

I went their for two nights in the last 20 years but it was to get my kid out of a dung hole motel he and his friends had not investigated reviews and was infested with bugs and stench. It was a great place for a family 20 or more years ago and before. Many a fun memory.

We all know what happened to Myrtle Beach but I can only whisper it over the internet.

Same thing kinda happened at Northlake Mall a few months back. Some of women in the neighborhood who were there “knew they heard gunshots. It couldn’t have been anything else.” No, they don’t have a gun, no, they don’t shoot, and no, they aren’t ever around guns. But they “know what they heard. Even the clerk at the store said that’s what it was.”

No amount of discussion that they may be mistaken was listened to.

I despise Myrtle Beach, and it’s getting more dangerous by the day.

But don’t discount the power of stupid people in large groups who already discount facts for feelings. Lots of experts out there who don’t know anything about guns or gunshots.

I wouldn't be surprised. College campuses like to downplay/ignore violence.

I've driven through MB once on Highway 17, that is the extent of my experience there, and I will make it a point to keep it that way.

I always go in November when there's almost no one there. My friend has a timeshare he lets me use in Garden City. I hate crowds.

Water and beach was dirty 25 years ago (when I stopped going). I'd rather step on a stingray than what I imagine is in 1' of water now.

I was in NMB Wednesday not far from BATB (Myrtle Waves) before all that went down. Small world

Perfect description of the Beach and how most of us feel.

I'm down there about every 6-8 weeks taking care of my Boss' condo. His is in the Windy Hill area. I always carry heavy when there, and we usually don't go out at night except to take my pup for a walk on the beach. A few years ago we took the camper to the KOA right down from Pirate Land. We went out at night to eat on the strand, and man, it was rough. Lots of people that seemed they were just looking for trouble.

I know this man. He is a hard man. If he is uncomfortable here, most others should use his experience in their plans to visit.

Doubt seriously there was any shooting or a coverup...just a bunch of crowd over-reaction to something (they say a fight) due to all the recent mass shooting hysteria. Some of the reporting on the news this morning had 911 dispatch tapes about reports of hostages being held in a restaurant. It’s like the kids game of “pass the word”, or whatever it’s called, where the final kid hears something completely different than what the first kid said...except at a massive level. Confusion around an incident, with fireworks going off, quickly spreads as someone shooting the place up!

That being said, I’m sure Broadway management, MB gov, Police, Chamber, etc. are going to downplay it for sure, especially with all the recent events in MB.

Ah, the good ole days when Broadway was just a bunch of pine trees and Hwy 501 between Conway and Waccamaw Pottery was one of the most boring drives around!

Funny that @JustKeepSwimming is the first to like this.

Lol....

True story...

First time I ever swam the La Jolla Rough Water race (1 mile ocean swim) in 1976 my Dad took me to see the movie Jaws in the theaters the night before. Navy SEAL humor I guess. I got 3rd place out of over 100 swimmers and I was only 7 years old. Pretty sure my eyes were closed the entire race minus popping my head out to check for the buoys.

And hey, I dig @wsfiredude sense of humor.

Is it just me or is Ft. Lauderdale the worst place in Florida? Miami is bad but I think Ft. Lauderdale is worse.

We were on vacation in Myrtle Beach when I first saw the movie.

Guess whose pansy-ass wouldn't go in the water?

Ft. Laud was, and still is somewhat bad. Not as bad as when they had spring break down there but it ain't far off. I lived on the inter-coastal waterway at Commercial Blvd and it was slightly north of where the main "action" took place. We still had our issues with the kids and I have handled several "situations" involving my property and my truck without making a call until it was all over with.
Pup woke me up one night around 0230 or so, I got up and had to go to the boat lift and convince 2 a-holes there wasn't anything on my boat worth dying for, didn't take but a skinny minute. And a guy by himself that thought my truck wheels would look better on his truck than mine. After his ride in the ambulance he agreed that he was mistaken.
Cops are all but non-exsistant during Spring Break except for the business owners that call.

You mean tourist don't know that sharks live in the ocean?
The #1 question I got at the dive shop. What they really meant was are there sharks where I'm gonna go.
So I'd fun with them a-bit;
-No. We have an arrangement with the sharks to stay away from our dive and snorkel areas.(and actually there's some truth to this. most sharks are scavengers and not hunters and generally want nothing to do with people)
-No. All the sharks are in the Pacific Ocean.
-The movie Jaws. Gawd. I'd often have to remind people that the only person who got in the water and lived was the diver.
-"Is this a good knife against sharks?"
Absolutely. Stick your dive buddy in the leg and get your ass back to the boat.

If I was feeling extra ornery that day, I'd tell them, truthfully, that the shark that gets you..you'll never see.

I had guys come down with their hi-dollar underwater cameras hoping to get pics of sharks, and not get one. My recommendation was to look for barracudas. They'll swim right up to your face.
Makes for a great pic.

Here's one at a 'cleaning station'. The cudas would stay still with their mouth open while the little fish and shrimps went inside and cleaned their teeth and gills.

cruise on out to the Atlas, they will get their fill of sand tigers, barracuda and occasional Tiger….

Not an ocean/beach person anyway, but a single one day visit to MB in '96 was more than enough to satisfy my curiosity.

I remember a lot of homeless people. I stopped at a truck stop and some ass clown blocked the door. I opened the door as much as I could without hitting the guy and said excuse me. He didn't budge. So I opened the door till it touched him and said excuse me. He didn't budge. I plowed through the door knocking him out of the way and said something I can't remember. Then he wanted to talk to me like we were best friends? I got rude with the guy and then made it clear I didnt want him near me.

Was just there two weeks ago with the family. Not my favorite place but my MIL has a time share with Marriott and ocean watch is pretty nice. Basically stay in the hotel compound except to go to dinner and also went to Broadway at the beach but always back to hotel before it gets dark and I am always carrying....

Was out at AR330 on Sunday and had an 7' tiger bumping the skiff. It didn't give a flip. I was in his world and he wanted it to be known. 300 yds away were two boats of divers.

We went snorkeling out from Key West and I had about a 5' barracuda swim across in front of my face about 12" away. That was enough for me.
