Just did an order and noticed they start putting in 'estimated taxes' for my zipcode.

Put in my old Florida zipcode and sure enough, zero tax.

I just ordered from them 2 weeks ago and they didn't charge tax. Did something change in the last 2 weeks?

There's no brick and mortar Brownell's store in NC IIRC.

On the phone w/ CS right now about it. Typically it is only IA & IN.

Yes, they now charge NC sales tax. CS would no say why, just that it was a policy change as of June 7th. :(

they can KMA then. No brick stores = no pay sale tax, unless they've taken upon themselves ala Amazon to rewrite interstate commerce law.

I agree! I just punched in my Mom's zip code in Pa, no sales tax charged. o_O

I'm curious if the money grubbing little bastards in Raleigh had anything to do with this?

I had noticed that on my last order too. It is not a violation of commerce laws as retailers may collect NC use tax as a "convenience to their customers" so that you don't need to remember to include it when you file your taxes.

I will conveniently order from other retailers that omit that convenience. You would think that other retailers such as the Armory of the Palmetto State would be a bigger target as they sell more big ticket items than a business that caters mostly to gunsmiths way out in Iowa.

This is why I rarely buy from Amazon anymore unless it's a 3rd party fulfillment. And no, I don't have a prime membership, either.

I just checked my sister's zip code (Kentucky) and they collect tax from there as well. :(

However, Virginia zip codes seem to be immune for now, if you have someone willing to accept packages for you there (I don't :( :()

For tax-exempt customers located in or shipping to any of the states mentioned above, Brownells, Inc. must have a copy of your Sales/Use Tax Exemption Certificate Form on file before you place your order as we are required by law to collect sales tax at the rate effective at the time the order is processed.

    Certificate supplied! [IMG]

My guess: Brownels merged with/bought Gamaliel which has/had a physical presence in NC.

Yeah, I had to pay tax on two cans from Gamaliel earlier this year due to their NC warehouse.

Amazon has several distribution centers in NC. The law requires them to collect the tax. Remember when Cabela's opened up in Garner? Same thing there.

NC says if they have even one employee in the state they must collect sales tax. Have a warehouse? Definitely.
MA does the same thing. If a company has a warehouse or distribution center in MA they gotta pay.
They tagged Amazon by changing it such that if any company that uses Amazon as a pass though is in NC, every sale on Amazon must collect NC sales tax.
Raise you hand if you ever put a number in the NC tax line about untaxed mail order / internet purchases. :D

The only people complaining are the ones who were not paying their legal taxes before.

the company that ships to my door pays taxes in this state on both labor and fuel. That's money that the state would not see if not for internet sales. I pay sales tax when I purchase something in the state. Mail order became internet sales. I never paid taxes in mail order catalogs either.

I was NOT charged NC sales tax today for whatever reason. :)

A week or so ago it WAS calculating sales tax. o_O

Do they ever offer more than 10% off sitewide?

I need to order something, but don't really need it for at least 4 months. Wasn't sure if I should wait around on a better code or not.

    Is there a current 20 off 200?

The item is $400 on their site, but $350 elsewhere. So 10% off isn't a deal, but 20% would be.

    ETA: nevermind...you meant $10 & $20, not 10% & 20% :(
