Ok here is my idea:

I CCH, knife, basic IFAK. So I count that as level 1.

I also have a larger handgun in my vehicle, with my 12.5" SBR for more spicy situations.

Let's talk for a sec that my vehicle is out due to EMP, wreaking or what ever in the SHTF.

How would you bug in with this armory?

As we know in a SHTF situation, how you look from afar can invite trouble.

What do you think?

Carry an old ragged blanket. Toss it over your head like a poncho, cover up everything, and make like a homeless person.

What hanging out of the muzzle devise in that picture?

Not a bad idea...

It's a safety device departments are going too.

Think long as hell weed eater string with a fat end

It proves homie is clear.

beat up duffle or larger backpack WITHOUT molle etc?

What is the OAL of the upper assembly?

I've thought about this exact same situation. One solution that may work is find a pack with sufficient enough height to accomodate the upper assembly. Fabricate or have someone fabricate a kydex "sheath", if you will, that matches the inside width of the pack. Regarding height of the "sheath", you can probably get away with it being 3/4 height of the pack's inside dimension.

Manufacture the sheath with two slots, where the rifle can be carried broken down...upper assembly in one slot and lower assembly right beside it in the other slot.

Ah...chamber flag. I see one sticking out of the sidearm muzzle, too.

Do you keep a get-home bag in your car?

I think walking around with a bunch of go-fast gear showing would be a really bad idea. Might shake up the locals and the vagrants you run into, but a large mob (or one guy hiding on a roof from a few hundred yards away) could take you out and get all your goodies for himself.

The backpack I have isn't quite large enough to store my AR pistol, even broken down. I like the idea of using a blanket as a poncho. Would work well except during the summer. I've considered the possibility of just wrapping it up in some old rags and lashing it to my pack. Goal would be to look a little like a bum hoofing it somewhere.

I think the key is to act like you have no particular place to be. Don't move like you're marching in formation or have a definite place to go. Amble around and gradually unass the area so as to minimize attracting attention.

Gray man.

I agree completely. Try to look like a drifter with nowhere to be and nothing but time on his hands, and just gradually disappear.

I think that the SBR is not going to be useful to you once you leave the vehicle behind unless you can find a way to conceal it. A blanket or rain poncho would work in cold months, but during the summer I can't see it being anything but extra weight wrapped up in a bedroll or something.

there was a guy writing about a civil war somewhere in a 3rd world he went thru with his family.
He said you went out at night only. walked in the shadows, looked worse off than the rest. the biggest thing worth more than guns and ammo was bic lighters. and wood for cooking fires.

He has some great information and first hand accounts that one can read on his blog/website(?)...

I can't remember who it is but I know @Lawless was the one I learned of him from. I lost the link when my computer puked...

And a shopping cart, with some random crap in it- something to abandon at the first sign of trouble, as a distraction.

You might be thinking of Ferfal from Argentina or the guy Lawless mentioned who I think was from the Balkans... I can't recall his name right now either.

If yall think of who it was, please post up!

I saw a guy on 85/40 last week riding a motorcycle with a bicycle attached at the rear. He was clearly ready for an EMP.

I thought he lost some french fries! I keep a medium ALICE pack loaded in my trucks tool box. Filled with excess USGI gear that I know works and how to use.

The old man has one of those set-ups in each pick-up, in his daily driver there's enough junk and gear to get a good jump on rebuilding civilization from the ground up.
I slack bad.

Several bums around here wear trench coats or blankets past the knee all year, all carry packs of some sort, key to the illusion would be obvious filth, and over powering stench.

and over powering stench.

This reminds me of a time when me and my boy walked into a downtown San Francisco MacDonalds bathroom...
I swear you could cut the green stench coming out of the stall .. Man , that dude stunk... And I've pumped septic tanks for a living.

I am going about this idea the wrong way I think.

The issue is the weapons of choice. They cause the need to support them.

I have been thinking on this since I posted this topic. These are what I think are the controlling elements:

  • Concealed is #1 concern
  • Not every SHTF situation waves the state law, so one must comply to a point
  • Not every SHTF situation is the end of the world
  • Physical ability to move all equipment is key to success, more so then firepower
  • Avoiding confrontation is key
  • If one must engage, it will be closer then 50yds.
  • Suppressive accurate fire wins everytime
  • Water / food is easily found within the first 48-72 hours of SHTF
  • A water filter is more realistic then a filled canteen
  • Food is a non-issue
These ideas are now going to drive the end result.

If I can not walk from work to home right now, all of this is a wasted thought...

I'm just gonna stack bodies like cordwood across the front lawn until they get the idea that it's off limits...
You only have to stack one.

Never though about this scenario. I maybe should have.

Think about it, this is more real then 99.9% of crap we come up with.

Today in Moore county we had a huge thunderstorm, hail, heavy wind, rain. What if my truck was taken out by something and I had to walk it in.

That's a SHTF a small one but it could happen

I've thought about this scenario from several different angles. The difficult part for me, now, is that my walk home from work recently went from 7 miles to 28 miles. 4x the distance likely means more than one day to get home.

This is my issue. I never really know how far away I could be. Could be a few miles could be a couple hundred...

In your scenario is everyone else around you experiencing flying poo, or is this more of a singular situation where YOU'RE screwed, but society is going about its business?

If it's a societal SHTF (natural disaster, riots, etc) I think I'd be less worried about perfect concealement. People are mostly oblivious. I think an all black SBR slung under the arm against dark clothing would go pretty much unnoticed by the masses.

If it's just me - vehicle issue - then I'm not sure I'd do anything other than be sure the cell is charged and wait on help (tow, family, LEO/EMS) with my normal EDC gear.
