I'm trading for a Savage 110 in .308. Help me build it!

The rifle has a blind magazine, but I want to add a detachable box mag and change the stock. I also bought a heavy varmint barrel with the rifle, so I'm going to get that threaded for a muzzle break (suppressor?). I'll check the trigger, but may consider swapping that too. Stock recommendations should allow for a bipod also.

Please keep you suggestions somewhat budget friendly.

This will be used for whitetail and 500 yds + range use. If I eat my Wheaties, maybe I'll take it out to 1000 yds.

I have a 4-12 Vortex with mil-dots and a 6-18 Nikon with the BDC. I'd like th yo use one of them, if possible.

Spend my money....slowly and judiciously.

If it has an accustock, I'd trade that out before the trigger.

Switching to a chassis greatly improved the performance of my FCP-SR. I suspect that swapping to a better traditional stock would also show immediate improvements.

I went with the MDT chassis at around $500.

CDI had a Choate tactical stock package that will get you a pretty good stock and convert to magazine fed. I ran one of those stocks while waiting on my Stockade custom built stock and was very pleasantly surprised with it. Rifle shot so well I almost regretted buying the more expensive one... Start there and shoot it some before you decide on anything else. Silly to plan for modifications until you know what you want to change.

What’s budget friendly to you? MDT offers several options for a chassis stock with ACIS magazine compatibility. If you get the LSS for $400 you have the option of putting whatever AR-compatible buttstock and pistol grip on it you’d like. You could cheap out for now and pull some out of a parts bin while you save some more money and go really nice with a UBR G2 stock or the PRS G3 for more of a precision build.

Is the accustock that bad?

All I can go by is my experience with an FCP-SR in 6.5CM. I went from a sub-MOA gun to 1/4 MOA gun with the same load as soon as I swapped out the stock for an MDT chassis and PRS stock.

Agreed, switch out the stock. But you can get a HS Precision or Bell & Carlson inexpensively (conversely, you can get a stock for >$700 if you want, but trying to stay budget friendly). Stick with the Vortex, but get good rings and base.

CDI looks like a solid option for a stock and bottom metal

Personally I'd try to find a used Sightron SIII with the money saved by going with the cdi/choate combo. A chassis isn't necessarily more accurate than a stock, it just has some additional options for customizing. All but one of my modem bolt guns are savage and having shot the Choate, I was very pleasantly surprised considering the budget price. You can always bed it for additional peace of mind too

I am not in the class as most precision (good) shooters but when I change to the Boyd adjustable stocks on both of my Savages (308 & 6.5CM) my groups did improve. Also, with the 308 it was less "felt" recoil. I feel it is the best "budget" option for $200.

@Jeffncs This gun doesn't have an accutrigger FWIW. It's a very good single action older Model 10 trigger. Has zero creep IIRC.

I would do the trigger last. I think it measured well under 5lbs, and crisp. A rifle basix trigger probably wouldn't be much of an upgrade.

If I were going to build it, first thing I would do is get a stock or chassis and get that Varmint heavy barrel cut down to whatever length you want (20-21" ideal IMO), get it threaded, and put some rounds through the gun. Figure out what it likes and then go from there.

Thanks the insight! I want to be smart about investing, so this advice is very welcome.

I appreciate all of your input. I'll do some more research and build from there.

Thanks guys.

@Jeffncs

For what you would have into a decent stock ($300-$400 w/ adj comb), CDI DBM w/inletting ($210), plus shipping cost to and back from CDI for inlet work ($100) you could probably be into a KRG 180-Alpha chassis for the same or even less if your Model 10 happens to be a bottom release.

top bolt release $768
bottom bolt release $662

I've been reading and investigating the rifle. This rifle is a long action with the 5" spacing between the action screws. The target barrel I bought is ~1" diameter and 26".

I'm struggling to find a stock that will accommodate the barrel and a drop box magazine. I can find stocks with one of the options, but not both. Suggestions?

Any suggestions on a 'Smith local to either Wake Forest or Durham that can cut, crown and thread this barrel?

Thanks.

That's the chassis I have. Made a considerable difference in my rifle, was easy to install and is rock solid. Highly recommended.

Which bottom metal did you use? Did you go drop box or ?

Thereis no "bottom metal" with the chassis. The chassis has an integrated magazine well that uses AICS patterns mags. I'd give them a call with your specifics just to be sure though.

That makes a lot of sense and is a cost avoidance for me!

Thanks!

I like that b/c I have quite a few AICS compatible mags from Magpul.
