Buying a used coyote mustang

Hey guys, I’m more into guns than cars but have decided I’d like to get into a 2011-2015 mustang gt with a manual transmission. I was hoping to get some advise for things to look for that might be an issue being I’m buying used.

I’ve seen a couple of the premium 5.0 cars with 60,000/80,000 miles in my price range but I don’t want to get in over my head if that’s too many miles.

There’s a guy down below Mooresville with one that had an electrical fire the year after it was first purchased. The guy said it was fixed and hasn’t had any issues since. It’s a 2011 with 83,000 miles asking $11,900. I think it has a salvaged title but I don’t plan on buying it and selling any time soon. Just looking for something for me and mrs. pbj to cruise around in.


I know very little about cars. I can change oil, breaks, belts, and the basics but would like to hear what you guys think. Any reason to stay away from these cars?

I have the 5.0 in my 2016 f150 and love it. Not sure if car and truck motors are the same but it has been great since we purchased last year. Good luck with your search.
 
I would want to know why the electrical fire during the first year? Was it due to upgrades? Salvage titles cars are ok. I would check with your insurance first as you dont want to pay more than they will insure it for since its a salvage.

Most banks won’t finance salvage titles either.
 
I have the 5.0 in a 2017 F150 with 60k. It makes me sad they are dropping it for some “new improved” V8 in the trucks. I don’t know what the plan is for later Mustangs.

I’ve not heard any reason to shy away from the Coyote 5.0.

I was comparing a new (at the time) 2017 GT 5.0 Coyote to 03-04 Cobras, and while the HP and TQ was similar, the Terminator Cobras are supercharged. It’s a whole other experience driving a boosted engine. No real comparison. The terminators made the Mustang seem boring, but I digress.

Just try to find a low mileage example owned by an adult that is unmolested. (Stock)

I have had the following new vehicles with the Coyote 5.0:
2011 Mustang with Ford Racing Package
2013 Boss 302
2017 F 150 2 door short bed 3:73 rear gear 6 speed auto
2018 F 150 2 door short bed 3:73 rear end 10 speed auto
2018 F 150 4 door short bed 10 speed auto
These trucks got 22 MPG.
In between I had a 2011 Shelby GT 500 with a 5.4 6 Sp

I never had the slightest bit of trouble out of any of the above cars. I see where Ford is going to a 427 CI pushrod motor for some trucks. Ima have to try one to see what they're all about. Right now the Gladiator solves all my truck needs. It is the second one of those I have had. No issues and 22 MPG.
The Coyote is capable of Amazing numbers stock..480 HP. There are Coyotes in our area producing 600 HP and have train like reliability.
Getcha one and have fun!!!

Good looking out. I did talk to them about it and I wouldn’t be able to get a auto loan, it would be a personal loan with a little more interest.

Do you still have the mustangs? If not why did you sale, if you don’t mind me asking?
 
Sold to try new ones. I always trust My experiences not what folks say or even what I read. Same with guns.
 
I have a 2014 Premium in Red with the Track Pack, only option missing was the nav. Think I have 22k miles on it.

Just buy ya a clean fox body and let it appreciate while you enjoy it.
I have had 5 of these from new to used. 3 new and 2 used. When I think back to how impressed we were with these in the late 80s and early 90s with their massive 225 HP motors...I smile. I remember when Hot Rod Magazine said 15 years ago " Buy Fox cars, they are the 55 Chevys of the future".
 
11-14 shares the same body style.15 is a redesign so see which look you like better.Clutch master has been a problem on some 2015 and newer ones and parts are not available at the moment.Have one sitting at work with that problem now.Can't say I have seen it on a 2011-2014 but do some google fu to see what others are saying.
I personally have been considering a 11-14 gt for some time but I will opt for the 6 speed auto myself.I like my 01 GT vert but damn it is slow and not worth the money it would take to make it respectable.

Edit: I wouldn't personally buy a salvage titled car unless I was going to modify the piss out of it and track it.Eventually you will want to sell it and that will bite you in the butt.

The coyote motors put down good numbers with just bolt ons and a tune, especially with boost. 2018 and up have raised the bar. They are good to go.
 
If you're looking for a manual, read this article. The MT-82 has had it's fair share of issues. Do some google/Bing/DuckDuckGo fu and you can read all you want, lol. The article will talk about some of the differences, and it gives a few reasons/fixes. Also, the notorious "tick", you can hear from the passenger side wheel well. Not really a problem so to speak, but it can be annoying to some. Now, when/if you want some some real power, or to make the drive-ability much better, look at pbdyno.com.
Ken Bjonnes is a magician when it comes to the Coyote's and tuning. He's got stock motors on twins making 1000 rwhp, and running the stock 10 speed auto's. Anyway, good luck in your search. Here's a little 2015 they did with the factory 6 speed auto trans. Crazy.
 
The wife and I drove a couple cars yesterday. The first was a 2017 civic si with 1.5L turbo. It was a decent car that would be good on gas but not as fun to drive as I hoped. Guess I shouldn’t have expected much from a 4 door.

After that we found a 2013 (I think) mustang gt at the Ford place in lenoir. The price was high for the mileage and we were wanting to find one of the premium models so we ended up passing. But either way this car sealed the deal, barring some catastrophic event of course. I’ve never owned or driven a car with a lot of hp but I couldn’t stop grinning all night. Hoping to talk to a couple guys next week and see what I can’t get into. Hopefully sooner than later.

I was always told that to place a value on a car with a salvage title was to cut KBB in half.

If you’re going to do it no matter what and you understand it’s about the smiles per gallon not the fact you purchased a depreciating asset then there is absolutely nothing wrong with financing. My interest rates are 0% to 1.99%. That money, even in a covid market, is better deployed in my portfolio. Same reason why having a mortgage at 2% makes sense.

I know there are competing theories with Dave R to be debated at another time.

I've had three 5.0 fox bodies beginning with my 1983 GT with the Michelin TRX package, remember those? Since I've had an 88, 92, then 94 and 95 SN95s that had the same 5.0, now I have a 2004 New Edge with the 4.6, upgraded to a whopping 260hp! Woohoo! :D

One thing I will say about those older 5.0s and even the 4.6, damn if they don't sound good!! I'm not a drag racer, more of an autocrosser/road racer, so I'll happily give up some HP for sound and rumble which adds more to my experience than a few extra HP. Lowering springs and a set of adjustable struts/shocks transform these things into fun corner carvers. Fox bodies and especially convertibles benefit greatly from sub frame connectors also.
