if I die tonoight it's cause I'm mixing margaritas and electricity.

And I've left a treasure map with clues to my 22lr stash.

Anyway. This is my situation. My assessment is that I can 3 way this with the ceiling fan with separate switches for light and fan.

Now how do I go abou this? My only idea is to remove the wire nuts and use trail an error to complete the circuits with the power on.

Any other ideas?

It can be done since the line is in that box, just make it a double gang and add a switch or get a single gang double switch, but you'll loose one of the switches on the circuit. So the other switch on the 3way will be blanked off.

You got someone sober hanging around with the video camera?

Make sure this person doesn't come into contact with the water. We want them to get good footage

Need a double switch box to start with probably. Drive your drunk ass to lowes. Make sure you film this also

I have at least a half a dozen fire extinguishers across town from you. I'll check the evening sky to see which direction to head towards.

Hi, save yourself a lot of trouble, just buy a fan remote control,
switch off the fan and light when you install the remote receiver.
then leave the fan pull chains for the light ON and motor on HI speed.
The remote wires up at the top trim cover, wires are labeled for you so it will work first time.

Wall switch always on. Remote controls fan speeds and dimming lights or off.

Otherwise you have to run a new line from the fan box in ceiling down to the switch box on the wall, cut drywall wider, use hacksaw blade in holder or vise grip to cut the two nails that hold the existing box to stud, then pull wire and switches to transplant into an OLD work three gang box and then new wall plate and switch.

Is that a 3 way switch that controls one ceiling fan? OR is that a switch with the fan and light wires running from the switch to the fan?

No idea I removed the plate just now. There is a fan with a light and a switch on the other wall. Not sure how this is originally wired

Wouldn't you know...there's a picture for this! Color coded and everything!

Ceiling Fan Three Way 2.jpg

For some clarification:

The 2 wire Romex is where power comes in. The white lead of this cable is connected to the neutral on the fan. The black lead from this cable is the "hot" lead. This lead distributes power down to the first pair of three-way switches (on the right in the picture).

The three way switches are wired together to perform their three way function as shown using 3 wire Romex...just follow the color codes in the picture.

The power from the three way switches comes back to the fan lead and the light lead at the ceiling fan from the left two switches in the picture. (The blue in the picture connects to the fan lead at the ceiling fan. The red in the picture connects to the light lead at the ceiling fan.)

Tie the ground leads together in each switch gang box and connect to the ground terminals on the switches. Tie all the ground leads together at the ceiling fan.

EDIT FOR MORE CLARIFICATION:

In your fan are four wires as follows:

One is a ground lead. This one will be physically connected to the metal body of the ceiling fan.

One is a neutral lead. This one should be white.

One is the fan control lead.

One is the light control lead.

OK, you have a three way switch that controls one fan. The connection that separates the light from the fan is inside the fan itself so you cannot separate them in the switch boxes.

Ok one more time.

Wall 1 has on switch for the whole thing with lots of wires like it used to be wired for both the fan and light but has been condensed into one switch. The other wall has the same thing and they ha be 3 way capability because you can turn one off and the other one on.

You should probably wait until tomorrow to start this. Seriously.

Hey, what do ya know Senior. I just poured some tequila with lime and we're getting ready to make pork tacos.

I agree with the above advice about converting the 3 way to a single double switch.

@Johnny....Wanna split the 22 stash?! Roadtrip!!!! Lol

Op-- hope you get it figured out and stay SAFE

^^^ this ^^^

Unless the feed to the fan and to the light are brought separately down to where your switch is, you'll not be able to separately switch them on and off remotely and separately.

The single three way switch is a ringer in this discussion....

If there's a celiling fan hooked to a three way switch somehow, I'm pretty sure Bubba worked on this.

why don't electricians label anything

Just in case anyone missed the picture

There's a picture above that tells you what those wires are for. Put down your margarita, put on your spectacles and do some studying

Im trying to see a ground in there somewhere....
