We really have not done much camping since my youngest was born and we are looking to get back into it . What are your must haves when camping besides a tent/camper? Thanks in advance

SBR, 2,000rnds of ammo, bear-proof body armor.

Ha. 'Nough wiseguyin'.

I haven't been in a while, but what you "need" may change with how you're getting to your site. Driving in? Backpacking? Bike? Raft or Canoe?
Just off the top of my head:

A "sleep system." Whether you hammock, cot, or lay on a pad, make sure they're roomy, warm & comfy enough for you to get a good night's sleep. Test your system out at home if you can! Sleep on the floor or in the yard and work it out before you go.
A way to keep dry -- tent, camper, tarp, etc.
A good, reliable camp stove & plenty of the right fuel--no fun goin' hungry!
Knife, other utensils suited to your type of camping.
1st aid kit.
A way to keep bugs separate from you--spray/lotion, screening on your tent/camper/sleep area.
Comfy, versatile clothes & shoes--forget fashion, wear what works. Consider 'technical' wear that wicks sweat away and dries quickly
Water purification device.

There are hundreds of other things! No doubt you'll get quite a list from here. Have fun!

EDIT: And, of course, TP!

Nah. Just funning, well unless you're into that kinda stuff then that's none of my business. Just don't invite me.

I carry a pack
change of clothes
Bug spray
Toiletries
Hammock setup
Luci Lantern
Water filter just in case
Water
Etek stove, gas and a Stanley stainless cup to boil water
Food depends on how much you wanna carry . I like the wise/mountain house pouches
Instant coffee
Few granola type bars
Single serve peanut butter

Just returned - I took far too much that I didnt use.

Food/water
Some way of heating up your food and water
instant coffee was easy
a few utensils to eat with
chair to sit it
tent and sleeping bag
I had an airmattress, but a sleeping pad would be fine too...bare ground aint comfy
wet wipes for a 'whore's bath'

And, as someone else said - TOILET PAPER!

It all depends.

Backcountry camping, you have to take everything you need. But you have to carry it. So weight and space are a big deal. I have spent 30 days living out of a pack, with weekly resupplies for food.

Non front country car camping, roadside random camping spot. You still have to take everything. No amenities. But now you have a car to move it around.

Front country campground camping. Now you have some amenities and don't have to take everything, just most of it.

I have a gear list, that is ever changing. We make a menu for the trip with a food list. Then the clothing list. We are usually front country camping with a family of 4 for up to a week. Lists are your friend. I'll try to get one up later.

If you have a campfire you might need a hatchet or ax, fire starter, lighter, fire extinguisher, and marshmallows.
Don't forget a good bushcraft knife and some 550 cord. Good first aid kit and something to carry water in from water source. I will try and out my list later,

I never go without me Kelly Kettle, a water filter, poop paper, and a stout handgun with enough ammo to get me back to my vehicle.
