Modern Barlow knives suck.... ok rant off.

when you open the blade it’s lose, and rattles.
So my question for you more experience knife guys if I push the pins out and take it apart is it fixable?
The action is tight and it doesn’t move or rattle in the closed position.
Or do I cut my losses and just use it as a letter opener?

Working on slipjoints is a fine art. If it were simply a loose blade, a firm rap with a rawhide hammer would get it done, but it being a nailbreaker in the action department, it sounds like there is some fitment issues in the spring/blade cam area. I'm assuming that is some modern Imperial made.

Plenty of good modern Barlow styled knives by Case, Rough Ryder, GEC, Lionsteel, AG Russell, Boker and tons of a high dollar custom makers. I know a little, and would be happy to help steer you in a direction if you know what you might want. Hell, I have one I'll send you free of charge, if you'd like.

@premise i just seen your post. I apologize about the delay in responding I didn’t get a notification. I appreciate the offer to send me. I really don’t need one. I have my grandpa’s that he carried. I just don’t Carry it because I’m scared I’ll lose it. I got this one At a flea market, I was looking at the display seemed pretty decent. Grabbed one in a box didn’t open it till after I got home. It was an impulse buy.

made in china...

PM your address; it would be my pleasure. I love gifting a pocket knife.

I’ve fixed a similar problem on a Queen slippy. It involves peening the pivot pin on the bolsters a bit at a time until it tightens up. Afterwards, the bolster has to be sanded to the requisite finish.

This was done on a knife that was fine other than being a little loose side to side in the open position.

Effing Queen. I've only had to take the rawhide hammer to a couple or three dozen of those. I won't rejoice when a non-liberal American company goes under, but they sure as hell didn't try to not make it completely understandable when they folded. I'll take China made Rough Rider over a Queen made post-Bill Howard.

This was an early 2000s model so I think pre-GEC.

My GECs still blow the queen out of the water.

A local to me GEC collector? Be still my beating heart.

I sold the bulk of my collection when the market went stupid (should have waited since it is even stupider now). I had all of the 38 Grinling Whittlers, even the Neptune Acrylic. If you ever get a chance to make it the Asheville/Flether show, Bobby McMahan has an absolutely massive collection, mostly rare, one off 45s and 36s. He's real tight with Frank Powers, so he gets some cool stuff.

I only have a couple, a 76 Outlaw in root beer float acrylic and a Beer Scout Knife in sawn bone my wife got me for a birthday. She called knivesshipfree and talked to Derrick :( and he recommended it.

That Beer Scout Knife is the coolest knife own, bar none.
