Read this and thought it was pretty good. I don't "usually" carry on myself, but I'm a relatively recent convert from constantly carrying a J frame. It's also a bit funny because I'm a bit of a mag whore as well...
Anyway, good read.

Reloading a handgun mid-gunfight, outside of a military or law enforcement context is pretty unlikely. Although he’s talking about carbines rather than pistols, a great quote from trainer Randy Harris springs to mind: “If you empty one 30-round mag in civilian-world USA, you’re going to be on the news … if you empty two, you’re going to be in the encyclopedia …”

I agree that statistics demonstrate little need for civilians to require a reload. However, following that logic, there's little need to carry; period.

I'm carrying an extra. ;)

Three things you don't leave home without, firearm, flashlight, spare mag, falls under the category of better to have them and not need them, than need them and not have them, imho, see vp9 was faster on the keyboard, but I'll leave it.

I keep extras in the car but not on my person. When BBS calls and tells me that my PCR has come in, I will then have 15 rounds instead of 9 on me.

I carry one also for two reasons.
- Mags are the weak link in most semi-auto handguns so it's nice to have a spare
- It helps with concealment. I wear my gun on my strong hip and my mag on the other. Symmetry is good.

If you cant do it with one round or magazine then you shouldnt carry at all.

From the comments section of the article. I guess this dude is packing a muzzle loader, because he only needs 1 shot. Damn, wish I was a baller like that. Sometimes I miss and stuff.

I have two spare mags in the car, but rarely carry an extra with me.

Discussions like this always make me ask "Why is this even an issue?" If you want to carry an extra, by all means, do so. It doesn't hurt anyone. In fact, it has >zero< effect on anything whatsoever. At least the argument of carrying concealed/open/or heck even carrying a gun at all has positives and negatives. But I cannot, for the life of me, think of any real negative to carrying a spare magazine. It isn't going to "extra super scare" people if they see it. If you already have a pound or so worth of gun on your hip, a few ounces in your pocket isn't going to make a difference.

If we REALLY want to get down to some business, we need to discuss all you boys out there wearing brown belts and black shoes. Get your crap together and coordinate that thing. If you don't have a black and brown belt, then get with Gunbelt and solve that issue. This is the real plague of our time.

I have on a black belt and brown shoes. Shirt is not tucked, though.

Do you also match your holster color to your belt or do you wear a black belt with a brown holster?

If it's my G43, I'll carry 1 or 2 extra.
I carry a G27 + a G22 mag.

I bought a matching ensemble of belt, holster and mag carrier. It was displayed at Wal Mart right near the boxed sets of matching shirts, ties and pocket squares. :D

I bought a carry gun that holds 15+ rounds so I would feel ok not carrying a spare mag. If I find myself in a spot where I need more than a few rounds, then I most likely need more than a handgun.

My thoughts exactly. Anything more than a few rounds is extremely unlucky,, getting into a fire fight is non existent.

I always carry an extra. With the shoulder holster I carry 2 to help offset the weight.

I OC carry both arm and extra magazine on opposite sides. I have some inherited hip/low back tenderness so I try to balance the weight on my hips. Also, I can carry 147gr in my mag holder(L) and 115gr in the arm(R) to achieve a better weight balance bilaterally(both sides). On the days when its really tender, I rotate the holster towards my butt from my side and that helps with the forward/backward rotation of my hip bones also helping the discomfort. My inner therapist is leaking out...

Carry what you want ... what you feel you need for that situation ... what you are going to always carry (the same way) and don’t worry about what others tell you that you need, should, etc.

For me, I do not have a badge or wear a bulletproof vest. I carry to protect my loved ones and myself ... I have no grand plan of saving the day. I believe there is only a very slight chance I will ever need to draw ... a minimal fraction of that slight chance I’d ever have to fire even 3 to 5 rounds at up close and personal distance ... a microscopic fraction of that minimal fraction I’d wind up in a situation that could be called a “fire fight”. For that reason my carry gun is in a caliber enough to give me a decent chance to stop a threat with few rounds. It has a capacity enough to give me a reserve if needed because of Murphy showing up. It is a platform I am well versed in and operate as second nature. It is reliable and has sights I can use if I have time since crap happens at the speed of fright!

I am not a LEO, operator or such ... I know I am behind from the start reacting to a threat so an extra mag is likely not something I’d use during an action but I do have one just in case Murphy F’s me and I could get back running with a mag change or to replenish after an incident if the odds finally did hit. Carrying an extra mag for my single stacks is no problem and don’t hurt anything.

You need to carry a second mag. Not as much for extra ammo as much as if you have a misfeed or jam, and need to drop/strip the mag to clear the gun. You don't want to be scrambling around on the ground trying to pick it back up.

That's exactly what I was going to post. I always carry an extra mag, not because I'm worried about how many rounds are in the mag (G-19), but what if some sort of malfunction happens. Be it rare, odd, or whatever, but I've taken enough classes and shot enough that $hit happens when you least expect it.

But in the movies there is always a spare gun laying right there on the ground of a different bad guy

This makes me want to carry several extras

It's just so damn easy...I have a tough time not carrying one.

Better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.....

I carry a G26 , so I always carry a 15 or 17 for a spare. With all the Gangs and drug dealers doing thier business right in the parking lot where you are. You never know what to expect anymore. A couple of my LEO buddies also advise being prepared.

I tend to agree with VP9C.

I usually carry a spare for malfunctions not because I think I'll need the round count.
