Carry an extra mag?

I use this horizontal mag carrier since I frequently have to remove and replace.

It's a safariland and you can get it for less than $20.00.

I find that the vertical mag carriers are just way to uncomfortable for me.

I also use this carrier. The horizontal holder is much more comfortable for me. I think I paid about $14.00 for it with a promo code a few months ago.

I do. Because i can. Sometimes i go to walmart with a full belt of mags. Just to see how long i can carry around a ton of crap on my belt, concealed carry style, before i get agrivated and take it all off.

I have carried 2 guns every step of my life for 20 years. No extra mags. I do not carry for capacity. I carry 2 because of MURPHY. I do not carry 2 for the odds of something happening but for the possibility of something happening. I DO NOT mean to imply that anybody else should do this. It works for me. We must all seek our own personal salvation.

On a recent Triangle Tactical podcast, @FlatFender mentioned a podcast he listened to where the guest was John Correia - he's the guy who runs the Active Self Protection youtube channel (great way to get a sense of what real-life self-defense situations tend to look like). Anyway, John has watched thousands of self-defense shootings and I think he said he'd never seen someone who wasn't LEO go for a spare mag (Luke, pls correct me if I'm misquoting, and it was "very rarely" instead of "never").

I carry a spare for reasons others have already articulated in this thread (plus it's a G42, so I'm not working with a lot of rounds to begin with), but I thought that was an interesting data point from someone who is an expert on how self-defense shootings go down.

Also, I don't think John has any video of a terrorist in action. I think we'd all want to make sure that someone who is planning on suiciding themselves and murdering everyone around them is incapable of further movement (including reaching for a detonator).

Here's the podcast for anyone interested. Mike Seeklander does a fantastic podcast, worth a subscribe from anyone who carries a gun on the regular: https://americanwarriorshow.libsyn....tion-john-correia-hundreds-of-lessons-learned

Also, John carries two guns, iirc, because he can.

Like I keep saying to each their own. As long as you are comfortable with your choice. I am not sure what others think matters all that much.

If it doesn't devolve into ridicule I think it's good to discuss what you do and maybe be challenged to defend the position. You're right that everyone needs to be comfortable with their choice but I don't want to be blissfully ignorant.

Read this and thought it was pretty good. I don't "usually" carry on myself, but I'm a relatively recent convert from constantly carrying a J frame. It's also a bit funny because I'm a bit of a mag whore as well...
Anyway, good read.

We teach a variety of handgun classes including an advanced concealed carry class and it covers this topic. Rather than carrying a magazine to shoot more, we recommend carrying for mechanical failures or problems. Such as your magazine base plate comes off, your in a weapon retention scenario and your magazine is ejected, your springs in your carry magazine become weak and fail, and the list goes on and on. It happens. I even had a student who had cleaned his carry gun two weeks prior to the class and forgot to load his mag back and had been carrying empty for two weeks. While most could difference in weight, he did not. Just some food for thought.

Carrying a gun without a mag? Or carrying a gun with an empty mag?

(Wasn't 100% clear on what didn't get loaded back...but was assuming it was an empty mag inserted into the pistol)

He was carrying an empty magazine in his weapon.

Well that seems like a major IO error IMHO. If you forgot to load your magazine and could not tell it was empty based on the weight on your belt what makes one believe they would remember to load the extra mag. LMAO. ;)

Haha very true. Just someone's experience that can be used as an example. I carry an extra mag due to mechanical failures along with a few other reasons we have seen and worked through in classes. But I totally agree, my first point to him was you SHOULD be able to feel the weight difference on the belt or in the hand, I guess some people just dont pay attention.

I don't carry a spare magazine, as I don't carry an autoloader. I do carry a 2x2x2 holder with fits a speed strip, nicely. For whomever mentioned it. My late wife was a "big city girl, and somewhat of a fashion plate", insisted my holsters, belts, and reload holders all match. Basic black, tan, or oxblood. Shoes will either match or be in a proper contrasting color:eek:

The only time I carry an extra mag is if I am gonna be dropping a big deuce. Like a post-Thanksgiving Day deuce. Otherwise, it is one mag. Or a newspaper.
