Stealership just quoted me $2,700 for a catalytic converter....

    I laughed.
    She (service writer) looked shamed.
    I laughed again.

    2013 Subaru Outback
    What’s actually reasonable?

$600-$800 installed for good quality aftermarket.
Just make sure its a direct bolt in replacement and not some cut out welded in crap.

eta:labor looks to be about 2hrs. Manifold/convertor assembly about $750. So still less than a $1000..

Your lowest cost option would be a universal cat that was welded inline. Second lowest cost option would be the Rock Auto replacement.

This is the wifes car and if something were to go wrong with internet purchased part, Tim is screwed. Wife's car is down while torn apart in the driver way for a few weeks at best

To make a claim under this warranty, return the worn-out or defective product with the dated original receipt to the dealer or retailer from whom it was purchased or to a Tenneco dealer for verification and exchange under this warranty.

Speaking personally, I would not hesitate to use a Rock Auto universal Catalytic converter on my wife's car. She is not very understanding either of unscheduled maintenance, but this is technology that has been around for almost 50 years.

Are you sure it's the cat? I have had a '97 Outback with 150k, a '99 with 250k and a '08 with 100k and never had to replace a cat on any of them and they all passed Meck Co emissions.

That's what I was thinking. Six years is an awfully short time to have cat go bad.

Unless you’ve run over something and damaged it 6 years is ridiculous. Second opinion needed!

What are the diagnostic code(s), before swapping out parts best to get second opinion.

BTW, Rock Auto has outstanding customer service, just like any warranty part,
you would call Rock customer service and they will send the replacement, once the defective part
is received back at Rock you will get a credit back on your payment method.

You can rent a car for an entire week for about $300 and if combined with the Rock part and labor or
DIY you are way ahead vs $2,700 plus whatever they decide to add onto the invoice.

Also any oil burnt or pushed into the exhaust is death to a cat.
