I know there’s a few on here but not sure who. A couple of buddies and I are heading down for the meeting tonight in preparation for joining soon and I was wondering who all was a member. I know Jason is heavily involved but wasn’t sure who else.

If anyone else is going I’ll be the fat stranger in a CFF hat.

Yeah, call me again if you need anything.

@bspitt for sure. I think a buddy of mine got busy and didn't make the transition. Ilavas from the other board. Another member is on here but can't recall his screen name.

We need Ivan back, forgot allabout him

That was a great place to shoot 300 yd reduced highpower matches. I wish they’d bring back the program there

Was that part of CMP or separate. CMP is still up and running.

Why do they keep their HP/CMP/Vintage matches closed to members only? Are their CMP matches run under CMP sanction?

Not sure but I’ll try to ask. We have some shooters that are pretty serious about it. Maybe they consider it just practice. I thought it was open but just checked the site and it’s not. They allow guests but you would have to find someone that’s shooting. I don’t need another expensive hobby so I don’t shoot it.

You know guys... I was confusing this range with Catawba Valley Rifle and Pistol Club in Conover, NC. They used to hold monthly HP matches on a 300yd range with pits.

A fellow HP shooting buddy of mine is a member at CVWC and he confirmed to me that matches are closed to the public.

Sorry for the confusion.

our matches at Conover are open to the public. We`ve been having bi-monthly AR matches using the 300yd range and pits, next one is in May. I`m trying to put together a 300yd "CMP type" match for milsurp rifles this summer some time. There`s a 22lr Tactical Steel Challenge match(50-300yds) taking place there in April. VA GENTLEMAN posted about it in the Rimfire section.

The reason I asked about the CVWC matches being member only is because 2 yrs ago I went there to shoot in a Vintage Sniper match advertised as CMP sanctioned. I waited at the gate early that morning and was told by the first 2 members to arrive that it was closed to the public, and also told in no uncertain terms that I had to leave the property immediately.(I was still parked at the locked gate, lol). I contacted CMP who said that to have CMP endorsement the match had to be open to the public. I never followed up with them and don`t know if they ever contacted CVWC.

At Catawba Valley Rifle and Pistol Club http://www.cvrp.org/ we strive to include the community and open all of our matches to the public. While it is a private club, if you drive by on a weekend and the gates are open, and a "MATCH IN PROGRESS" sign is in front of the clubhouse, come on in and check it out. Somebody may just put a rifle or pistol in your hand and let you have a try at it.

I think I saw you post this before. Kind of pisses me off, and not at you.

I talked to a buddy that's big into the CMP program at the club. It was a brief conversation but I don't think the gripe about opening it to the public actually comes from CMP. I could be wrong. We have some members that are very against opening the club up. But IMO that's how you grow the club and I've said as much. I may try to pursue this a bit with my buddy. I don't shoot CMP. But it never hurts to get fresh faces onto the club as an introduction to our facility. And not everyone knows a member, or sometimes they don't realize they know one until they come out.

FWIW, we open the club to the public for sporting clays on the first and third Sat of the month. And we used to have public archery shoots. So it's not like it's something we never do. Guess I'm confused how it got to that point.

Question, do you guys charge for the shoot? We charge members and guest for 3D and sporting clays. CMP does not have a fee, but it's just members and they don't really have a lot of costs to the shoot. Targets and target stands.

The match directors at Conover set their own fees based on awards given, target expenses, stc, with the remainder after expenses going to the club. A lot of the matches pay cash prizes with the leftover going to the club and general fund. Usually a match fee runs between $5 and $15. Our skeet league last year (1st Sunday of the month, open to public, May-November) cost $10 each month for 2 rounds of skeet per event. The funds went towards the $3/round the club charges for clays per person, a well stocked prize table at the end of the league, and a catered dinner on the last day. I`m not sure what our 3-gunners do, but that bunch spends some cash on props and targets!

We don`t have "sanctioned" matches, so we don`t pay associated fees. Our winter pistol league used to be NRA sanctioned, but when the $35/shooter fee we were charging wouldn`t pay the sanction fee we dropped it. We just kept the money for ourselves. Each shooter paid $35 to enter the Winter League, we shot every thursday night(indoor) from late Dec thru the 3rd week in March. At the end we had various awards, a nice prize table, and the club paid for us all to go out to eat somewhere. Definitely worth the $35 in my opinion.

On the bad side, it`s dang expensive and a pain to join. You have to attend 4 meetings, attend a couple of matches to get to know a few members and demonstrate your ability to safely handle a firearm, then empty your bank account. A few years ago the club had to buy 25acres to keep a trailer park from building next to our pistol and skeet ranges. To pay for it, each member was assesed an extra $300/yr in dues, some for as long as 10yrs which was the term of the loan. New members are required to pay a $300 "land assesment fee" for the 1st 5 years. So...1st year is $100 initation fee, $300 LAF, and $165 dues = $565. The next 4 yrs are $465, after that it`s $165 but you can work off $100 of that by doing work around the property, etc., so you could only be paying $65/yr after year 5. You can work off up to $100 each of the first 5 yrs too. Time is exchanged at $10/hr

Thanks! It's always good to see how other clubs work. We do $3 member and $5 guest rounds on skeet and wobble trap. But they are only open with a member who has been checked off on the facility. Sporting clays is $5 trapper, $10 member, $20 guest for 50 targets on the first and third Sat. Archery collapsed but was $5-$7 per shooter depending on age or class for members and non members. We don't do leagues. It's a great idea but I think our location kind of makes it harder to attract folks out there. CMP has no fees but member or guest only right now. We had a member looking into 3 gun but I think the zoning won't allow it. There were several issues including space, interest, and codes.

$400 first year with 4 work days for a new member in the first year. $200 each year after and 3 workdays per year. We have also capped membership at 400 for the time being. We are not there yet, but getting close. I'm on the board this year and it's interesting being that involved in the process.

We capped our membership at 165 I think, and we're close. The club has been there since 1947 and we're pretty much landlocked. We have a 50ft indoor 22 range, 2 rifle ranges from 25-300yds with operating pits, skeet range, wobble trap range, and 3 pistol ranges, one of which the berms are high enough for 3 gun matches.
For regular scheduled matches we have "Outlaw 3 gun", Cowboy action, and 22 speed steel on the pistol ranges, and 22 Tactical Steel Challenge and an AR "fun match" on the 300yd range. I'm trying to put together a vintage/as-issued rifle match this summer sometime.
