CFF July 18 Rimfire Benchrest Challenge

Neither of mine shoot it well at all but I may be pickier [emoji4]

I suspect that its reputation is built on “wow - this is way better than bulk pack”. Which it certainly is. I am sure there are exceptions but even basic match ammo is more consistent than SV in the vast majority of rifles. But for about 6 cents a round now, it’s great if it is ok in your rifle.

I think this is it. SV has always been vastly superior to bulk in my rifles, and when you can get it as low as $0.045 a round for plinking, it is great. Where it really starts to show its weakness is when you have to be consistent. Like on these games we play or shooting groups. Those inconsistencies creep in, but you start sorting those out the higher you go in level of ammo.

Everyday I’ve gone out to shoot my rifles, I usually shoot some SV or some SK STD+ along with some better match ammo, so I can get a feel for how much better the match ammos are, so I can figure out where that magic level is that I am comfortable spending on more rounds. Because my CZs always shot well in general with CCI, I bought it every chance I got, and now I have a ton of it, and feel like I have to shoot it if for nothing else, comparison purposes. But the shine has definitely worn off it since I started playing these games with you guys.

Here are my results from Wed night at the Wake County Range ... I always feel like I'm cheating there since there is no wind but this time I'd say the heat made up for it in mental ways ... I was soaked in sweat by the time I left ... some of it probably from the pressure of shooting the targets against the rest of you all! Those of you who have shot there know what I'm talking about ... I'm actually glad that they close down in August for that reason!

Shot 4 targets best of which was -3 and the others were +2. +3, and +5. Had a couple holes that may (probably not) have been 1 better than what I scored them as. Only posting my best target but happy to show the others if anyone wants to see them ... a couple shanked shots into the woods that I had to send my dog after - LOL ;) I was also surprised as my gun favors the Eley Match at 1070 fps and tonight I shot 1050fps and 1056fps that I'd been avoiding since I had done some 1060ish that was not as good - the 1050ish worked very well for me so I might have to try some more of it.

CZ 455 Varmint
Leupold VX-3 4.5-14 x 40 (Not VX-3i)
Sinclair Lightweight Rest in front, Protektor Bunny Ears Bag in back
ELEY Match
Raggedy towel (blue 1 in the pic) normally used for ammo but Wed it was a sweat rag! Hahaha...

Edit: did not shoot Tenex but rather Match (black box)

Nice shooting. I like that 3 under! I am so jealous of you indoor shooters. I am going to try shooting it again next week. Tenex is nice stuff just expensive. I am going to try some Eley Match next week and see if I can do better. Again job well done!

This sums up my thoughts as well. I got into these 22lr matches to shoot MORE (more practice for proper shooting fundamentals) for less money vs the larger cal guns. Its about finding the ammo you are satisfied with for the right price. Yes you can break the bank going for the good stuff but then again if it makes you shoot more conservatively there is less practice, if this make sense.

I have found that I am shooting more of my good stuff since I started these these threads with you guys. When it didn’t matter, I was plenty happy shooting my CCI SV. Now, I’m finding that my shooting improves dramatically on these challenges with some medium range match ammo. I’m definitley going to start going back to some larger targets for weekend shooting, instead of 1/4” targets, so my misses won’t be misses!

Or start shooting rimfire 2gun and steel challenge with the SV.

I’m actually thinking of doing this. I’ve got a ruger mkiii I started to ready for this along with a 10/22. Then a house move kind of put everything on hold and I don’t really have a way to practice for it. But hey, practice is way over rated and everyone will just say, “get out there and do it” and I kind of agree with that sentiment. I don’t really mind not being good but I hate feeling stupid.

Glad you finally posted. You did great, IMHO, considering conditions (I was in misery).

And, yes, go for 2 gun rimfire. You'll love it,

Has everyone noticed how hard it is to place just one shot per target, then have to adjust your aim for another compared to shooting for groups of 5-6 shots at the same target ? There is no more difficult shooting sport then 50 yard single shot competition. Mostly anyone can shoot a good group of 5-6 shots at the same target. The single shot per target takes time/ skill and equipment plus lots of practice..I applaud all your efforts and keep at it, it will only make you better.

I believe it is much harder when you have to change your POA. I shoot 100 yard target also. I have attached it to this post in case you want to give it a try.

Awww man ... now I’m gonna have to go sweat again :(

Reading your response I just realized I said Tenex in my original post - brain fart - I was shooting ELEY Match (black box). If you look closely at my setup picture you can actually see 2 boxes of it on the bench. Edited the post to correct that.

I did give Tenex a try once upon a time and didn’t think it was much better than Match in my rifle so I’ve stuck with Match since then and I drink more beer with the savings! I’d rather come in at 3 under and a couple beers than 6 under and no beers :p

Fully agree with everyone re moving from one bull to the next. It’s an exercise in consistency and doing everything exactly the same each time. I always have to remind myself not to try to force the shot. If I’m pushing or pulling on anything to be on target I start over, relax, focus, and let it happen. Much easier said than done and hence why we always go back to do it again. As I said before, no matter how good I do I know I can do better like that last shot that went into the woods that I had to send my dog after and made me shoot another whole target. There always seems to be at least one of those :(

I don’t know if I do better on the single shot per target, but I enjoy it more than groups, at least at 50 yds. After 2-3 shots, groups makes keeping an exact aiming point difficult, at least when using good ammo. It also makes me angrier to see the flier that screwed it up. At least shooting at the different holes, i can more easily follow what I did. I think it helps me get a little better too, so I know where every shot went at which time instead of all being in a blob.

If you are shooting for group size only (like ammo testing) dial your scope off 20 clicks or whatever. Then your aim point stays clean.

Back when I had the time, I shot a lot of 22lr BR comps at 50 yards using a CZ 455 I found out that a flyer using sub standard ammo wasn't acceptable. I had the best results with Eley Black box and Wolf Match grade ammo but your results might be different. Shooting lower quality ammo, even in practice has no use because you wonder ? Is it the technique I'm using or the rests or the ammo when the flyer occurs..The problem with using the more accurate sub sonic ammo is that the gun will recoil before the bullet leaves the barrel. This means that anything you do different from one target to the next will effect bullet path. It might be different pressure or a slightly different hold, here comes a flyer. We then blame the gun or ammo when the problem was with us.. If you were to take the CZ 455/452 or the Savage Bull barrel guns and mount them into a gun vise and use good ammo ? They will print one hole at 50 yards all day long and then now knowing this, any shot out of the one hole is something that we did to alter the bullet path. Any advise is worthless with out a tip, so this is one.. Take your aim on that single shot target that you have your rifle rested on.. Now close your eyes and that your hands off your gun. Now open your eye and look thus the scope. Are you still on the target ? If not, that where your bullet is headed if you were to squeeze the trigger.

That is the way I was taught. You close your eye and when you reopen you should still be on target and remember breathing will affect this greatly. A lot goes into one shot. I always know when I am out of my normal rhythm just by where the shot lands.

I guess I should branch out and try some "real" ammo. I shoot CCI SV because I shoot 99.44% suppressed, and have 20+ bricks of it sitting here.

I do get flyers, but realize it's probably me. Hadnt thought all the way through the ideas @Lager laid out. Movement after the trigger pull could definitely be part of the issue.

Made it out again today. Shot a 0 and a -2 . On each target I put a question mark on the ones I was not quite sure which way they scored. Fun time until to many crazy people started to show up. So I packed up and left.

When I shot in comps using my varmint 455 and Eley Black ammo, I would usually score a 88 to 89. This means that out of 100 rounds of single shot target shots I would be within 3/8 inch from the target point 88-89 times out of a 100. This was good enough for a first place trophy in the hunter class unless this Preacher would show up with his thumbhole 452 who would then shoot a 92. By email I still receive match results and a new shooter , 2 times has scored a 98 ? That's real close to the $4000 match rifle class and hes using a hunting rifle. With some effort I was able to contact him to see what he is shooting and I was thinking Anshutz. Come to find out, he is using a 455 with a Manners stock, 8 ounce trigger and what surprised me was his ammo of choice ?? CCI SV,,,,,,,,,,,,,makes me re think my original thoughts that high price ammo is the key to accurate 22lr shooting.

Very nice shooting @ECNC ! Re your ?’s ... I’m just on a tablet right now but when I grow them they look like good shots to me. I’ll look again tomorrow on my pc but if others agree that makes for a -3 and a -1 and that Sir makes for a most excellent performance ... actually, regardless ... very nice!

@ECNC - I am good with them if you think they are. The second one looks obviously good. You can see them best, so I’m good with whatever you think.

I scored the to the lower so it stays 0 and -2. Hopefully will get another chance to shoot next week. Got to beat you indoor guys! :D

Well, I'm done trying for the month. Looks like my best will be -11.

The best was from July 11th with the Vudoo and the Athlon Cronus scope with bipod and rear bag (same setup as the pic in last months file). I didn't break Par (0) with the CCI SV that day shooting a +4 and +6, as it wasn't doing well that day.

I swapped out scopes last week with a Vortex Golden Eagle as I have really been doing more target shooting that tactical shooting. It has taken some getting used to, but I like it. I tried out more ammo with this setup last weekend and today, but I couldn't top the Rifle Match target that I started with. Besides CCI (which I have a ton of), I tried a couple boxes of various stuff from Grafs a month or two ago, and shot up the last box I had of several of those. I shot CCI SV and scored a -2 and a -6. I shot the last box I had of SK Flat Nose Basic and it did well at -6 and -7. Didn't have any fliers or bone head shots, but just had too many 0's. I also shot the last box I had of SK Pistol Match today, and shot a -9 and -3. I had a couple of terrible shots on the -3 paper that were all me, and missed the green on both. Otherwise it was a good target, and could have easily been -9 as well. I didn't try out my last box of Rifle Match, as I figured I would save it.

Of all the ammo I tried out of that batch of different ammo, my rifle definitely likes Rifle Match the best (besides the one box of CenterX I tried which was even tighter). Pistol Match has not been as consistent. Flat Nose did really well, but just not quite as good as Rifle Match, and Rifle Match is cheaper. CCI SV has done much better than STD +, but the bolt sticks a lot loading it, which is aggravating.

I also pulled out one of the CZ 452's, but with much lower magnification and shooting STD+, I only managed +11 shooting with only my range bag as a rest. I need to put a bipod on it or get a front rest of some sort to have a chance with it.

Attached is a post of the new setup, even though the Athlon was installed for my best sheet.

Very, very nice. Great job!!!

I’ll switch over to my CZs next month for the competition and try to start dialing them in. One has only really ever been a squirrel hunter and then other hasn’t been shot much.

Another tip if you are using a magazine, load a complete magazine then open and close your bolt over and over again with out shooting them. Then examine your bullet heads, if the mag feed lips are not exactly right? The bullet heads will show major gouges on one or two sides as it forced into the chamber. Obviously a head with a scrape or a gouge missing from the head will not fly straight. Easy fix here,, Just single feed by leaving the mag installed and single feed the next bullet into the chamber with a flick of your finger and them close the bolt and shoot.

Thanks. I can’t shoot that well with my other rifles. I used these fun matches to test ammo out with it, and used up all my test batches.

In August, I will go back to shooting my CZs in these contests and see how I can do then. I would be way back in the pack this month with the one outing I had with my CZ. I plan to try and put a bipod on one of them, and maybe swap out the glass, but we’ll see.

We pulled out a couple Mossbergs with peeps this weekend, and then I got a very firm reminder how much high magnification helps!! Amazing how you can only see a pin prick and the bullseye is actually a couple inches wide out there. I was trying to figure out which target I was aiming at!!! I wouldn’t have even been able to see anything on the paper in this challenge with those rifles.

Let's play some golf!

Standard CFF Monthly Rimfire Benchrest Challenge Rules
- Target Size: Standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper - Choose the "Print to fit" option when printing.
- Target distance: 50 yards
- Any shooting position you'd like
- Front rests, bipods, front/rear shooting bags, bunny ears, ... etc. are all ok.
- No full length rifle mechanical rail/sled type rests allowed
- Iron sights or optics of your choice are all allowed
- All done on the honor system. Shoot it, score it, post it.
- Winner chooses the target and challenge for the next month.
- Post copy of your target, setup, where shot, and score

Scoring:
- This is our own little golf course so you have 18 holes (two holes per green), lowest score wins. Best possible score is -18
- 1 shot per hole for a total of 18 shots (A hole is considered the small circle with a -1 in it)
- Par = 0 points
- Best (lowest point) area broken is your score. Breaking any part of the lowest score ring gets the lower value. If you break a -1 line you get -1 points.
- Area off of the greens are +3
- Tie breaker 1 - Number of Birdies (number of -1 shots)
- Tie Breaker 2 - If there is an equal number of tie breaker birdies then it goes to the Lowest price of ammo used. Do we have a forum supporter's site we could use for this pricing? If not, maybe we could use Outdoor Limited. They are a NC dealer with a selection of almost anything (even if not in stock).

Found a sample of one of these greens on a website, and decided to make a course. PDF file is uploaded here.

Let the games begin and good luck ladies and gentlemen!
So just to be correct, is this target going to be the " Official December - January, Bi Monthly " target? I am OK with that. I am another person who doesn't play Golf or watch it very much so the explanation of terminology and scoring will help. The target I submitted allowed you to keep shooting until you got one in the hole. I feel like limiting it to 18 shots might save a bunch of ammo or money.
So an executive decision is needed in which Golf target is the official one.
