I struggle with organizing our chest freezers. I want to be able to keep similar products together, plus practice FIFO (first in, first out).

Between the meats I've purchased, the stuff I've gotten from processors, and the bit I've processed, myself, the dates, sizes, and shapes of the packages varies.

We've stacked and used the fabric grocery bags, and although that kinda works, it isn't the easiest to maintain, especially when you're trying to practice FIFO and you're adding to it.

Are you just chucking meats in there and rummaging through it all willy nilly, or have you added anything to your freezer to separate product and organize it?

We have one top mount basket, all else is willy nilly. But ours is only 10 cubic feet.

I looked, but couldn't find, more top baskets.

Pffft. The girls just cram stuff in there and promptly forget about it.

Sounds very familiar and glad someone asked so maybe it will spur me to find a different method if only I could get other half on board.

We use a couple wire baskets similar to the one @cchioda3 mentioned above in our top opening freezer. Big stuff on the bottom then a basket by type. You do loose some space but you're more likely to get to the bottom vs let it freezer burn.

we do left to right.
left is new, right is old.
eat right first.
and, yes, it has
a flimsy lock
easily defeated.

(when my doctor asks if i "eat right"....of course!)

Baskets on top then Willy nilly on the bottom. Each freezer has a different meat. Chicken in one, beef another and pork in the last one. Store packages have dates from manufacturer. Anything we packed has a sharply date written on it.
All other products are divided equally between the freezers.
Ice cream goes in only one freezer so I can rotate it before it goes bad.
A good practice is to get a Gatorade bottle and fill it with water upside down with a penny inside. After it freezes store it upright in the top of the freezer. If you open the freezer and the penny is on the bottom it’s a bad thing.

I've heard that, but with a quarter. Haha.

Venison sausage on the left, venison burger on the right, venison cube steak in the middle.
Back straps in the wire basket.

Simple enough.

😉

We have an upright….

Bread on top shelf
Poultry/fish on the second
Pork/beef on the third
12-2 liter bottles of water in the bottom
Dairy/vegetables/ice packs in the door shelves

You're definitely gonna need them baskets..... it's not like you could reach anything in bottom anyway.

You could use milk crates possibly. Not sure how well that would utilize your freezer space though.
