I've been eyeing a Kibler Southern Mountain kit for awhile, and I'm selling off some superfluous junk this week that should cover the cost. I've decided on a wood for the stock, but haven't made up my mind on caliber yet, and was hoping y'all might have some input.

I probably won't shoot the thing all that much, but I'd like to take a deer with it at some point and do mostly target shooting. As far as I'm aware, NC doesn't have any restrictions on black powder caliber, but other states in the region might, so chime in if you have some knowledge on this please.

I'm leaning towards .40 caliber since that seems to line up with some of the historical rifles that Kibler's kit is based on, but my choices are .32, .36, .40, and .45.

Anybody have thoughts on the subject or a compelling reason I wouldn't just go with .40?

1 bore, because deers have ticks and are groty, and all you need is the skull and horns.

I hunt mostly in Virginia and i think at least a .45 is required. I use a custom .50 cal. flintlock and on some hunts I'll use my .62 cal. smoothbore. I hope to own a Kibler one of these days. Personally I would go with the .45.
