Hey y'all! One of the niches I have let myself go without for too long in my gun collection is an all-purpose, mid-level 308 hunting rifle. The reasons for going 308 are numerous, but in the end I'm simply wanting to go with that caliber over niche rounds because it's more readily available and tends to be a reliable round for hunting, precision rifle shooting, and range shooting fun in equal parts. I want to hunt with it, possibly compete in some sort of shooting matches with it, and just have fun with it at the range. So it's somewhere between hunting and modern tactical/sporting that I'm looking for, and I acknowledge going into this that going for such a generalist mindset is going to make it not necessarily a master of anything it can do.

That said, I'm currently trying to decide between three different rifles that are available in my local gun stores: a Savage Model 10 FCP-SR, a Weatherby Vanguard Sporter, and a Bergara B-14 Hunter. All three fit the following criteria:

-sub-MOA accuracy guarantee (with premium ammo and/or good handloads, the latter of these being my intention)
-$600-$700 price range (Savage is $619, Weatherby is $660, and the Bergara is $699)
-excellent trigger
-lightweight enough to carry on hunting trips (moderate weight)
-heavy enough to maintain accuracy and not be horrific on recoil (moderate weight)
-medium profile barrel that will hold accuracy reasonably well during range shooting sessions (within reason)
-24" barrel length
-consistently good reviews among friends and online reviewers

I started out just wanting the Weatherby because it's classy, and I like the wood stock that it comes with. It was the first rifle I learned of that had the sub-MOA guarantee. The Savage was recommended to me by RedneckFur. The Bergara is one I just saw the other day at a gun store and saw that it also had the sub-MOA guarantee. The Savage has the benefit of coming suppressor-ready, which in my opinion is awesome and extremely convenient, given I wanted to have that done anyway. The Bergara is a relatively new model from what I understand, and I don't want to ax it as a possibility unless I hear folks saying it's bad.

Right now I'm of the opinion that I'd enjoy any of the three. So I'm asking y'all. Which of the three would you pick? Have you already picked one of these? What do you think of them?

One other one you might want to look at is the Tikka T3, fits in that price range and all other criteria you have listed other than barrel length. in 308 it is right at 23 in.

Love my tikka t3

I voted for the Savage because I have 2 and really like them. However a guy at the range let me shoot his Tikka T3 and it really shot well. Honestly between the two, I would probably buy the Tikka simply because I don't have one.

Howa might be another worth considering if your looking more budget friendly.

My 10FP has been a really accurate rifle. It seems to like 150gr a tad better than the more popular 168s.

Academy in Jacksonville had a Savage 10 FCP .308 with a threaded barrel for $525 with a $75 mail in rebate. For that price you'd be hard pressed not to get it.

I went shooting the other day and my buddy's Savage 308 (not an Axis...a higher end model) had a problem when chambering the round and pulling the trigger, it was like the firing pin wasn't reaching the primer half the time. There would be NO firing pin dimple on the primer whatsoever, and it was definitely functioning correctly. It was factory ammo, and if it was put back in the magazine, it would fire on subsequent tries, so it wasn't a primer depth issue. Something was really up with the rifle....I told him to send it back to Savage, as it was very new.

Of the 3 I'd opt for the savage. Truth be told though if you plan on doing anything to customize the rifle that's really your only choice for easy to find aftermarket parts and support.

I would go with the Bergara all day. I have the .308 B14 Hunter and love the rifle. I have had it less than a year but it is the most accurate out of the box hunting rifle I have shot and feels more like a semi custom job than a production rifle. I hate to be a fan boy but it I can not say enough about it. If you are close to Warren County you are welcome to shoot it.
