Does anyone know how it works for a renewal, yet you live out of the state of NC? - I'm still paying NC taxes (cause I'm retarded and didn't claim FL residency) and technically still a resident on the books. My renewal is coming up in December. Other than a different mailing address, should I change anything? I don't still live at the residence listed on my CHP, but it's where my NC DL is from and still the one I use.

So, let me get this straight. You live out of N.C. and reside in Florida. I'm not sure what kind of taxes you might still be paying here if you don't have physical property here and an address. Wouldn't it be easier just to apply for a CCW in Florida rather then lie on the application for renewal here?? It's my understanding from people I know in Florida that the process is very fast and there is very little hassle unlike here.

Sounds like you could potentially have issues in two states. Not just with guns.

My guess is an out of state mailing address would raise a red flag.

Let us know how it works out if you try it.

Unless your occupation has rules that mirror the 'deployed' status of active military, you are no longer an NC resident. Apply for an NC renewal is going to involve a bit of perjury on your part.

Just do it right and squared away in your new residence.

Is your living in FL temporary and you plan to return to NC?

Depending on the answer you might need to rethink thing? If you’re driving on a DL that is not your permanent residence and where you vehicle is registered and the insurance company has is listed as housed at your CHP is not you only questionable thing.

Are you active duty MIL? If you are, go to your admin and file the paperwork to change your state home of record. It’s easy, I did it as soon as I moved out of NC and you can keep it to the state you change it to as long as you remain on active duty, even if you moved back to NC (or some other dumb state that has income tax).

As for the CCW, you don’t live in NC anymore, and even though the state will happily take their taxes from your income that you aren’t even earning in their state, they don’t issue Non-resident CCWs. So unfortunately you will not be able to renew in NC.

I do not live in FL, that was merely an off-hand comment regarding income tax.

I am active military and NC is my home of record. I live across the pond but am in the states often for extended periods for different training. Sometimes I'm in constitutional carry states, other times I'm not, so I just want to be covered.

Any family in NC? Can you change your DL to that address?

Yes, but I've also got family in FL. Is it possible to change to that address and then change my HOR to avoid paying NC taxes? - Then I could apply for the FL CWP.

I can only speak to how it works in the Navy, but the process should be pretty similar across the services. You probably wouldn’t be able to change your home or record while you are on orders overseas, as the form you need to submit to change, requires you to be stationed in the state you are changing it to. Best bet is to go ask your S-1 or whatever y’all call your admin shop.

Perhaps you could get a non-resident permit from a state that does them. I seem to remember Utah gives out non res permits pretty easily.

So I'm paying NC taxes, vote in NC, and can't get a damn CHP renewal?

There is a spot on the renewal form for AD, I just don't quite know what that means.

Yup, pretty much. Sucks don’t it? I dropped NC like a bad habit as soon As I got stationed here in TX.

So besides the DD form, do I need to provide any proof of residency for the legal state of residence? Would I need to acquire a DL or something?

In order to get or renew an N.C. permit you will need documentation saying you’re an N.C. resident. Remember the process is very county specific. If you changed your official residency of record to FL even for tax purposes you might run into issues when the do the background check. Fortunately of unfortunately as the case may be, there is no litmus test for residency but it’s a preponderance of things.

If you’re still officially declared a resident, contact your county sheriffs office and ask them what would be the best way to renew while deployed outside the area. You may be able to mail your papers in or something.

Technically, yes, but it really just depends on how your admin shop is.

Looks like Arizona and Utah is high on the list for non-resident reciprocity. I may go through one of them.
VA as well...

Or at least there's supposed to be a bunch of NC residents getting them because there's no training requirement or something?
