I have a sweet neighbor lady that has just turned 89 years old. She is a firecracker and still in pretty good health. Joanne and I kinda adopted her and try to look out for her and help her out. We've taken her to doctor's appointments, picked up groceries for her, taken out her trash, just little things to help her out since she's alone.

This morning she calls me and asks if I can come over. I go over and she says she has something that she wants to give me. It's her gun that her husband bought several years ago. She doesn't have enough hand strength to pull the trigger. She says that she feels safe with Joanne and me close by.

I tried to refuse and told her to keep it and if she wanted me to have it, just leave it to me in her will. She said she wanted to do it now so her family wouldn't have to deal with it. She didn't disclose the reason but, she didn't want anyone in her family to have it.

It's a Smith & Wesson Model 38 Airweight Bodyguard. It's never been fired, it was loaded and kept in a nightstand for years.

I gotta find an old lady!

Nice of you to take her under your care. We did similar with a 92 year old neighbor back before we had kids. Sweet lady, very direct. All we “got” was a pile of really terrible oil paintings she made. One of this (really, terrible) hangs in my wife’s home office.

Ahhhh..............you "got" more than that out of it my friend. That big ol' heart beating in your chest has a warm feeling left inside it due to her presence in your lives and the awesome things you were able to do for her.

Say it ain't so.

That lady was hilarious. She lived in the other 1/2 of a 2 unit condo.

She called at 6am on a Saturday…..

Rose: “Tim, I’m ready for my Dr appt. Come get me”

Me: “I didn’t know you had an appt…”

Rose:” that’s ‘cause I didn’t tell you. Nevertheless, I’m ready”

….

So, I get up and haul her to the Dr for a wound check up

Docs office is officially closed, but he opens just for her. So the lobby is dark, nobody there except the doc, no nurses, staff, etc.

Doc holllers at us from down the dark hallway., “Come on back Ruth!”

She stands up, starts walking down the dark hallway…”Where the hell am I supposed to go?!”

I tell her…”GO TO THE LIGHT!!”

She stops, turns, and with the bigggest shit-eating grin tells me, “Not yet! Soon, but not today!”
