Hi friends. As you probably know, I'm ex military, swat team, medic, instructor, etc, and my church has come to me and asked me to research and then start a "church security team". I'm happy to head this up and train trusted individuals in the congregation, but I don't really know where to get started.

I'd like to see other church's "Security Guidelines" (or whatever it might be called) so that I can use it as a template to make a more specific security plan for my church.

I don't want it to just be what to do with an active shooter. I want it to also cover a missing kid, medical emergencies, building security, who should be where to create a safety perimeter during service, etc.

Do any of you have anything like this from your church that I could use for research? If not, do you have any idea of where I could find something similar online?

Thank you all in advance!

I’ll take all the info I can get as well.
I’ve gathered some helpful information from several very helpful members here.

I could get you the phone number for one of our deputies. They teach a course for church security about every 3-4 months to keep all religious buildings safe.

Contact local sheriff dept and see if they have a officer that gives classes. We just did this in our church(Davidson County) and it was very benificial.
Thanks! I know my local SD is doing similar church security classes. Im going to call them today. One of the deputies attends my church so I'm planning to check in with him directly, as well.

I was just hoping to find out if there were any guidelines already available so I could get a jump start on it.

Thanks Cowboy. I'll follow up with you if I don't get any traction at my local SD first.

Order their kit which gives you a nice template and guidelines to get set up and build from. Ordering one of these your liability as it relates to having a plan.

Most of the local PD will provide information but not training as they wont want the liability. Most of what they will provide will be worth what they charge for it....$0.00 since you'll already know most of it.

Plus alot of times they will come out to your church and give pointers as to where you need to improve on security measure aka doors windows etc.

Clayton PD has been hosting active shooter classes, they filled up in like 20 minutes. I am curious as to TTPs as well, and the role of being insured by the church regarding liability.

Definitely want to be covered by church insurance, especially if you're operating as official Church Security. Better make sure you have some guidelines, policies, and procedures in place if you venture down that road. Many times it's best to maintain a non formal group of members that are willing to act rather than a formal security ministry if you dont have all the formal insurance, policies, procedures in place which protect you from liability.

John has a 12 video collection that makes some interesting points.

I just watched the first 4 videos. They were wonderful, but they brought up so many things ihadn't even thought of. This is a lot bigger than just grabbing 5 guys with ccws and telling there where to stand.

Creating this security team and then managing it is going to be a full time job. I guess that's why no one at my church has done it already. It might be more trouble than it's worth.

Oh theres a lot more to it which is why I said its many times better to do something "loosely" organized. We have 8,800 members and my team consists of approximately 100 people divided inton4 teams which alternate coverage week to week. Fortunately for me my church began down this path 25yrs ago so a lot of the structure was already in place leaving me to focus on making changes where needed.

@Wahoo95 Head Sheep Dog! ;)

the best thing you can do is read the state statute on Security Companies, and Security Officers.

https://www.ncleg.net/enactedlegislation/statutes/html/bychapter/chapter_74c.html

Once you understand that, you now know what the state of NC considers a Security Company, Organization / team. If you want to become a legit Security Officer that works for a Security Department at the Church then there you go.

OR do not meet any of the above standards at all, not even 10% of them and you are not forming or apart of a security organization.

As you ask questions, here is your FAQ

Does anyone know with any degree of certainty if a weekday preschool on a church campus (in an attached building) constitutes a “school” such that NC Statutes regarding firearms and schools would apply?

And I understand that any advice received here is worth exactly what I am paying for it.

As it was taught to me when I got my CHP in 2010, NC law is purposely expansive enough when referencing schools in gun laws as “educational property.” It can be expanded to even hospitals if they are “teaching” med students inside. If your daycare “teaches” then it too would be considered “educational property.”

I don’t know if this was changed or reworded in the past 10 years.

There have been some updates regarding churches that operate in schools, but this is a preschool that operates in a church, and not on Sundays. We’ll likely need a legal opinion, since the laws aren’t easy at all to interpret.

Agreed, we’re getting ready to start gathering in a Gov’t school bldg and I’ve been asked about carrying there as well.

What are the legalities now of carrying on a school property on a Sunday if your church is leasing the building?
