The mayor of the City of Greensboro, Nancy Vaughan, is trying to get support to stop having gun shows at the Greensboro Coliseum. She did an interview with WFMY news 2, and also WXII, http://www.wxii12.com/article/greensboro-plans-to-cancel-gun-show/19152388 (swipe and paste in address bar) http://www.wfmynews2.com/video/news...uncil-considers-canceling-gun-show/83-8029574 and said that she thought she had enough support from the all democrat city council to get the gun shows stopped. She said that they couldn't change the gun laws but they could stop the shows in the City of Greensboro's Coliseum. ( I thought the coliseum belonged to the citizens of Greensboro and not the City proper).

I think all of us should email all of the city council and voice our opinions and objections. Just a few suggested questions - What will be the economic impact of cancelling the gun shows? What will that cost the city in sales tax and hotel revenue for those of us who will eat at a GSO restaurant and stay overnight in GSO? What will this do for their $4 million shortfall this year? What about the sales tax lost on gun sales that won't be going in the general fund coffers? For all of the City of Greensboro's concerns about economic impact that events in GSO that bring in outside people to spend money in GSO, this doesn't make much $en$e! To email the City Council of GSO, please swipe and paste this link - http://www.greensboro-nc.gov/government/city-council/e-mail-city-council . Please tell them how much money you spend in GSO while you are attending the show - and tell them that this is illegal. Grassroots NC (GRNC) is planning on fight this in court if necessary. Please communicate within the next two weeks - they plan to pass a resolution regarding this on 3/20/18. Let your voice be heard!!!

Hear! Hear!

we should not email...we should show up. email/fax/letters/calls add up to zero.

showing up actually, in person, for the entire meeting, ...you don't have to say anything.
(i've done this before. people pay attention to people. even if they don't want to do it.)

take time off.
skip the ballgame.
after the Gun Show is canceled it will be too late.

that's why IN PERSON is so important.
very few do it, so it makes a bigger impact.
go to the Greensboro CC meetings. at least once.

Guys cannot have it both ways. If businesses can be allowed to refuse to serve someone then why shouldn't the city of Greensboro. It is their elected officials. If you want it changed they need to elect other officials that have a different philosophy. I see this as no different than making a baker serve a gay couple. There are other venues that will gladly take the show money.

By that reasoning, DMV should be allowed to refuse service to whomever they choose when getting tags or a license plate. The sheriff's office should be allowed to refuse service with CHP renewals. Or, the VA should be able to deny service to veterans based on personal views. Big difference between public entities and private ones.

The real problem here, in my mind, is that a government entity shouldn't be in the business of building/owning/running a convention center or coliseum. But, they do, and here we are.

And, the gun show promoters have looked for other venues in the greater Greensboro area before and been unsuccessful finding one. The city has made it known for years they didn't really want the show there.

Did anyone mention High Point? ;)

No venue in HP

Au contraire. Among the 12+ million square feet of exhibition space dedicated to the High Point Market (used just a few weeks per year), there is plenty of space that's completely empty between Markets. Showplace, Market Square, Atrium are potential venues that come to mind. Surely there are more. I have no idea whether the landlords would have interest.

Look at Brandon who runs the Salisbury show. It started in Lexington at the fairgrounds, they decided they didn't want the show there so it went to Thomasville at an old Food lion and is now in Salisbury. My point is there is space if you look hard enough for it.

Yeah there’s plenty of room for a show I. Hp. Lots of showrooms are empty except the month before each market and a few weeks after each market. Parking would be the biggest problem. If hpu didn’t own the mall it’d be a great place but I’m sure they wouldn’t condone a gun show.

Brandon doesn't run a 1000 table show (which Greensboro was, at its peak). It is fairly easy to find a venue with adequate parking if you are running 200-300 tables. Get up into the 500+ size, and it is harder than you would think.

Parking is actually the biggest hurdle in finding a venue for a gun show.

And, for the record, I don't have a dog in the fight. I do know the promoters would have moved already if they could have. If the city is successful at running them off, there is a good chance there will be no Greensboro show, at least not as we have known it.

Would be extremely cool to have so many visitors that all the available parking space (that's totally empty during non-Market weekends) could be filled. ;)

That will just drive more gun sales to dimly lit corners of gas station mini markets at 2am. Good solution for the "gun show loophole". No gun show, no loophole. :p

Years ago Showplace WAS a venue for gunshows... i was there.
Benton Convention Center?

GAA where car auctions occur??

Wonder when the State Fairgrounds will try to oust.

Yup, I went to the show at the Showplace at least once or twice.
