Colt Halts Production of Long Guns for the Retail Market

One on GB now (AR15A4)with 1 day left, up to $1200 with 2 bids on it. I might have to let one of mine go but I’ll have to get permission from my wife first....;)
Edit: a few hours left and it’s up to $1650 with 13 bidders.

Quite a few of the old Prancing Ponies I can see ... a Mother of Pearl handled Single Action Army, the snake guns, Woodsman, etc but ARs? The FN FN-15s (CHF chrome lined barrel with FF rail) can be found for $1200-1300 if you look ... and to me as a tool their fit and finish is better than the newer Colts. Yes, I think every gun nut should have a Prancing Pony or three in the stable but an AR would be down on the list of the Ponies I’d buy ... just my 2¢.

Colt made the announcement that they would no longer be selling AR rifles to the civilian market. Do I care ? Hell no. There's many others that make quality rifles ,some I expect are better than Colt. I had a 6920 ,sold it because it was not as good of a shooter as my DPMS M4.. It's just a sad day when an Iconic company such as Colt caves in to the left wing liberals. What's your opinion?

They caved in the 90s on handguns so no surprise

Colt caved in to the almighty dollar. They would still be making them if they were profitable for them. That they are not profitable for them is partly the state of the AR market and partly Colt's fault for their horrible management decisions over the years.

Anything else they are saying about their decision is spin. It is about money, first and foremost.

Merged all 3 threads...

However, this recent news begs the question: when, if ever, will Colt resume commercial production of its rifles?

“It’s not forever,” Spitale said. “It’s to say that, at this moment, we’re listening to consumers and putting our resources where they’re most valued.”

LOL, if they were listening to the market they would have cashed in and made bank off the walking dead.

Put my 2 in with yours.....agreed. ARs are tools to me as with all such muck not much Pride of Ownership. My old love affair with Colt is not connected to anything they make today.

Glad I don’t own any.

My most fond Colt moment was seeing 6-7 Colts go down in one day on a Rifle range from shearing bolts, all from one unit. A bunch of brand new looking M16a2’s

Probably a bad batch of bolts, but it left an impression

Taking my last in-the-box 6920 to the Concord show this weekend. Hoping to see lightning strike twice, having sold the other at Hickory last week. :D

If it's about money, why say younare going to stop selling to the civilian market. Cops aren't walking around with machineguns. Just stop making the guns if they aren't profitable. There is no reason to state you will stop selling to your base except to appease the libdouchnuggets.

When Ruger, FN, and SW sell the same product for half the price you do its kinda inevitable you are going to be driven out of the market.

When they where in stock about a year ago you could find FN m4s for ~$800 and the Colt version was around $1500.

Sold my other 6920 yesterday at the show. One guy wanted it so badly, but didn’t want to pay the princely sum of $950 plus tax. He told me he had just “called on one from Iwanna for $600.” I told him I’d like to buy them for $600, too, but he wasn’t getting mine for that. He came back a couple times, then left. The next guy walked up and bought it without dickering.

The last Colt LE6920 I bought, I paid $899 for. It is the plain M4 carbine 2013 configuration with clam shell handguards and such. That was in 2015. They had honestly went down since then in price because of the Colt Expanse and OEM-1 & OEM-2 versions.

Yep. I’ve seen them barely crack $1000 once or twice on sites like grabagun since 2013, but they have mostly been $900-$975 in that time period. I’m not saying there wasn’t a retailer out there wanting $1500, but the market price hasn’t been that high.

Oh, so you were just using the most overpriced 6920 you could find to prove your point. They're both 900-1000 ARs, both because they are the benchmark for quality, and both have military contracts.

Didn't Iwanna stop advertising guns years ago?

But on point, I've never been one to buy the name, because of the name. Colt, Harley Davidson, Sony, Toyota...whatever. I understand the reputations and why they are, but I've seen brand new Mercedes that were absolute junk.
I guess I'm like Missouri..show me.

I found out something from a gentleman that works for Colt, Cory Francis. Colt uses the same process and parts and such for manufacturing and inspecting their in house commercial rifles as they do for military rifles. The barrels are different lengths (but adhere to the TDP except length). The lowers are the same forging, just milled differently (with the sear web) and of course have the sear. All of the parts are as close to the TDP as possible (most are the same parts).

Colt however sued FN and won the rights to the TDP. Meaning FN can use it for their military rifles but have to change their civilian rifles. I believe FN has better barrels with their chrome lining and such. But that is a matter of personal opinion.

That being said, if a Colt were the $899 I paid and a BCM was $1200, I personally would pick the Colt. I love DD but they cost even more than than BCM. Colt was honestly the best milspec bang for the buck. There are many companies that meet and exceed milspec in many ways, but there is also a reason that the TDP is still used today.

I am not defending Colt, but from a business standpoint it makes sense. They make far less off of their AR line then they do the new Colt Cobra, King Cobra, King Cobra Target, etc. The Python, and Anaconda are coming back too. When you have most that would just soon buy a PSA or S&W Sport for $300 less. Most never run the volume or rate of ammo through an AR that USUALLY makes the Colt, FN, BCM, DD, and LMT rifles marginally better. Does that mean that Colts are more dependable, no, does it mean it is worth more, no. I have had a Del-ton that I trusted more than any because of the amount of rounds I put through it reliably. Colt isn’t the company it once was. But they usually do run, and run. The majority of the people who work at Colt punch a clock and don’t care if they make ARs, pistols, or widgets.

Holy crap, the fear is real. A4's are bringing $1500 on gunjoker.
Any of you FFL's interested in selling something for me?

For around a few months, then came back. Is Ab Correll still posting his overpriced rarities?

Colt for BCGs, FN for barrels. Though I've been quite impressed with Faxon.

That said, the most solid, accurate AR I own is an old Bushy with an older Colt barrel. It has no right to be as laser accurate as it is, especially with me shooting it.

What bothers me the most regards Colt decision is the fact they will continue to produce their rifles for law enforcement and military use only and are only eliminating sales to the general public. The standard 6920 sold in stores is also pedaled to law enforcement so its not as if Colt will stop production. What happens when/if other manufactures start to make similar choices?

That old roll mark of "law enforcement and military use only" is coming full circle.
