I installed an Odin Works Atlas 5 on my recent build, 18" rifle length SPR type rifle. Long story short, I hate it! The blast that slaps me in the face with every shot is not only unwelcome, it's ridiculous for a .223 in my opinion. With that said are there other options that you would recommend? This gun is shot mainly from the bench and or prone for semi precision and extended distance, so fast follow up shots isn't really my focus. I would just rather keep the blast out of my face if possible.

Thanks in advance!

I have a Miculek comp on my DMR, but a simple flash hider is probably fine. Not much need for a comp on a heavier AR IMO. Not a ton of recoil anyway.

I have no complaints about my FSC556, or my cheap Strike Ind Checkmate, both do well keeping things flat enough to spot impacts. People near me complain about the Checkmate.

SI also has the Kingcomp with little ports that are supposed to disrupt the blast, I have one but haven't tried it.

I'm trying to remember the one that is on mine (that I like). Loud as all get out, but zero recoil, and no gas to the face. @TSConver sells them... arrgghhh can't remember the name.

I just installed a JP Enterprises 3-port compensator on my son's AR. We shot it this weekend and were both surprised at how completely it eliminated muzzle jump and reduced recoil. It is easy to install using their double sided crush washers and they sell different sizes very inexpensively.

Make no mistake, if you are standing beside it, you will feel it, but neither of us recalls feeling it when we were on the gun. They have it in black and stainless also. That and JP makes some great stuff.

Once had a PWS, I really like it. Battle Comps were good when I need my sinus cavity cleaned out, it felt like getting punched in the face, but there was no rise or recoil. The WarSport GP comp is a good one, or used to be, they could be junk now. Just today I bought an Armalite M-15. Ill let you know what I think when it gets here.

PS-I like to experiment too much and cant leave well enough alone

I have a Lantac Dragon on my AR and love it. It is loud and might not be fun to be next to but no hot gasses are felt by me Unless I had Mexican before I went to range... It's not cheap though..

I also have a Miculek comp on one of mine and it is awesome. But you won't make any friends of those next to you on the range.

I've come to not care for brakes anymore. Annoying as hell.
I've run a Kies linear comp on an AR15 for years now. I don't even think Kies makes them anymore, but there are other linear comps out there.
I would guess it's 70% as effective as a brake, but it has zero flash issues and throws all the sound downrange. Tons more pleasant to shoot.

I did the exact same thing.

Ive got a Battlecomp 1.0 on one of mine and it does good at both flash suppression and recoil compensation. Any true brake will be obnoxious if you are beside it
I have Spikes Dynacomps on 2 rifles, 11.5" and 14.5" middy, they're a great all around without the obnoxious concussive blast.

I actually have a matte stainless one that I recently removed in favor of a suppressor mount, if you're interested @hlpressley .

I use a surefire pro comp and it works great.

I think a lot of this concussion is magnified when shooting off a bench. It makes it far worse then if you were able to get the muzzle off the bench. And, often when shooting off a bench, you are also under a roof which makes it even worse. And, often on a concrete pad, which doesn't help.

First time I stuck a Miculek brake on my rifle it felt like someone was smacking me with a 2x4! And I was shooting off a bench. I couldn't tolerate it. Sold it to Booger!
But I only shoot AR's off benches to sight them in. Once I started competing for fun it became apparent I would need to get used to the blast. It's a huge advantage and a good brake will cut the recoil 70% or more. Doesn't mean much off a bench, but it sure means a ton when the object is to put 2 shots on paper as fast as you can as you run by! Running around in a match you don't even notice it. Plus, I often double up my ear protection.
But it's an odd feeling hearing a gun go WHAM and getting SMACKED with concussion, while feeling almost no recoil. Kinda like a Major Open pistol.

But for a precision rifle, I'd be looking for something a little quieter, too. But you might also try plugs and muffs to see if that helps. The Epsilon might be a good choice, but it does have a little blast.

If you don't care about muzzle rise and recoil reduction, just put an A2 hider on there. Most brakes and comps will hit you with more blast than an A2.

I use this on my compr rifle and while it's very effective, the concussive force is a little greater than my ST Flashcomps.
I know it's more money, but have you tried the screen that fits over the ports? Works exceptionally well on my friends' 9.5 inch pistol rig and still tames recoil reasonable well.

I haven't and actually forgot about it; no need for my comp rifle. However, it makes total sense that it would work well because it then becomes more similar to the Flashcomp, Dynacomp, and M4SD haha.

No brake or compensator unless it's absolutely necessary due to recoil......... and then I would seriously consider a suppressor first.

I've been beside a 338 Lapua with a brake and 300 WinMag AR with a brake....... it sucks being anywhere beside them.

Yep. Granite has the combo for $99.

But I am a cheapskate so I buy small 2 port brakes made on a CNC by a guy on Ebay. Then again Im not running a pistol or SBR.
