Complaints about big US flag at Gander/Camping World

I wish we had more information about communication between Gander and the City. My first job was actually permitting and code enforcement... in my experience it's pretty hard in Western NC to rack up fines like this unless you're really trying.

This is more like Town of Cary type stuff-

Here in Gastonia, Gander had to apply for a permit to fly the flag. How high of a pole and what size. Light approvals also.
Willing to bet its the same way at all of the stores.
yes and when told they could only have this size flag they still put up the one that is way bigger.

Ok then, another devil's advocate question:
Is getting attention the same thing as advertising? You can't advertise anything if you don't have the attention of the public. But now that they have it, what are they doing with that attention?

With a store of this size it is always advantageous to have your name attached to the fight for the flag. The people into camping is all about pride in our country. They could vacation anywhere in the world for a fraction of the 200k they pay for a low end class A motor home but choose our country. The same with the people pulling campers, instead of the hotels they go to locally owned campgrounds over and over. Remember the same people coming to defend this fight now are the same people the owner doesn't care to have shopping in his store. I would guarantee you somewhere there is an internal memo about how good this will be for their company.

That flag has been up forever; are we sure they didn't recently vote to change the rules and Gander is taking the "grandfathered in" stance?

Win-win situation; Gander leaves it up and the city keeps fining them. Maybe with all that new revenue they will issue less tickets!

Just a quick question for everyone that says let it fly. They knew it was to big and did it anyway breaking the local ordinance. So if you are for rule of law like deporting illegal aliens and sanctuary cities. How can you be for this.
I haven't taken a stand on the flag issue, yet. I'm kind of mixed on it, but not for reasons that others have mentioned. I don't feel the sort of reverence that some do as a symbol, but then I think this country has largely become a farce in terms of what are supposed to be its highest principles. In many ways I find it to be an irony that the company is using it in that manner and that in many ways it seems to be a fitting display of America's true values: the holy $ above all else. So, as long as it isn't a safety issue that harms others, the fact that it's garish and offensive is really a don't care case for me.

As far as the part about it being an issue with the local government, I rather enjoy seeing the government getting a big middle finger. The idea of rule of law has become so perverted beyond the basic notion of protecting people and their property, and intrusion into our daily lives has gotten so invasive that I think we're past any non violent means to correct it. Consequently, there is a side of me that would hoist the proverbial black flag and tell government - let's fight; and that side of me wants to see those local tyrants defeated. (My feelings here are admittedly jaded by my intense animosity towards the stupid Democrats that make up the county commission where I live).

Some leftie is probably literally in-route right now from Massachusetts to vandalize it.

Pretty sure this has been brewing for at least a year.

I go to Statesville often, the city needs to deal with their crime problems. This flag is a non existent issue.

Priorities seem to be an problem for cities anymore and they waste more money than they use properly.

We need more rules and regulations.
Please force some more upon us because our freedoms are no where near complete extinction.

If I want to fly the flag, then some nanny shouldn’t have the right to tell me different.

Best post I've seen all day

Do we know why the fine is retroactive to that specific date? Was there a meeting? A vote?

When was the old flag replaced with the new one? I wonder how many warnings they got / what their response was before the fines?

I believe zoning was invented when 1) brothels popped up in neighborhoods and 2) heavy industry started blowing smoke into [neighborhoods].

Freedom is great until it encroaches on other people's freedom.

You’d feel a whole lot different if that were your neighbor, and ha had a 100 foot flag blocking your view, or flapping around.

Or if your neighbor decided to build a 14 story parking garage 16 feet from your property line. Or hold a music festival for three days.

We’re a society. Not a bunch of loosely affiliated individuals who are constantly having our “freedoms” stomped on by “the man”.

You live in the world you want.
And I will mine.
Freedom doesn't come cheap.

Ps. If my neighbor wants to fly a huge flag, then God bless him.

freakin' city people.

You are right and I hope when it bothers those other people so much they finally pass a law that you must turn in your guns, YOU my friend are first in line.

Gladly sell you some boots for $20 more than the most expensive store you can find...even when they pretend to go out of business.

We used to be a society and in days gone by, issues would have been dealt with by society. Today everybody runs to the stupid government for every problem and has been programmed with the idea that they're incapable of handling things.

The people that enforce zoning are not the same ones that fight crime--and they aren't interchangeable (meaning you can't just reassign the zoning folks to go stop drug dealers).

They said in the article they've been paying the fine since October, I think.
As someone else mentioned, it takes effort to get to the point of actually being fined in most places. If fines started in October, I'm betting the first notice was issued 60-90 days prior.

This is a false equivalency; I don't even know where to start.

Dude...try the blue pill instead of the red pill this morning. Chill out. That's a pretty big leap to make from this discussion to wishing a fellow forum member be the first to surrender their guns. Your turban might be wrapped too tightly if a stupid internet discussion pisses you off to that level.

if gander was my neighbor id have a lot bigger problem than a flag flying. of course zoning laws have their place - but i dont think "society" requires legislating every single aspect of ones life either.

and if you dont think youre freedoms are being stomped on by the man - then more power to you. my experience has shown me the opposite is true and govt overreach is a problem and is getting worse from an overly litigious society.

If our country is to exist the rule of law must be foremost in our actions and activities. This company of greed can buy the whole City of Statesville if it chooses and know they can play this charade as long as they wish with no damn recourse. Too bad the fines were not collected by the elimination of electrical, sewage, and sanitation services which the city does provide while this display of comtempt continues. The hell with corporate displays of power, it is time that we the people say enough is enough.

The very flag in question. Its not blocking the sun, nor business entrance or exit of anyones. Not hampering anyone free movement. Doesnt harm air travel. Birds seem to be in good health.

In other words, there is no problem

And you have to also factor in freedom of speech.

This is something I do not understand.
