Hadn't happened to me in quite a few years so I guess my number was up.

I got the automated fraud call from Wells Fargo and it rattled off three doctors charges, all $800-900 each, and none of them mine, and then one Shell gas purchase that was mine.

The computer gives you two choices, when it should be three.

If you recognize all the charges press x, if you recognize none of the charges press y. What if you recognize SOME of the charges??

Then if you want to know more about the charges press 1, which I did, and all it did was recite the same charges with a computer that can't pronounce the doctor's name, and the location is "unknown", and even the Shell charge that was mine said location "unknown". Then they put you on hold till you're connected to a foreign call center ten minutes later.

They said I'd get my new card in 5-7 days. I said, "Can't you express that thing?" They can, and they are.
I got home and logged onto my account so I could get the name of the docs office that accepted the card, of course that account is gone from my on-line profile since Wells Fargo canceled it.

Anyway, so much for chip technology.

I got a call about a month ago from NCSECU asking if I was in Miami. I was not. My card number was though. They had already declined the charge and cancelled the card while we were talking. No charges actually got through. I had a new card in a few days. Other than the inconvenience of having to carry cash I wasn't out anything. This is probably the 5th time in 20ish years. The first time they got about 2k before the bank caught it. Their anti fraud algorithms are improving.

I keep a second card for expressly this purpose. It's in my former business' name. I never use that card and I finally got a letter that said if I didn't use it at least once in the next 30 days they'd cancel it as fraud prevention, so I used it.

Visa/Wells Fargo only denied the third doc charge that were all attempted today. They are on the hook for the first two which is about $1600.

Dude, Wells is the worst. Don't they have gun buster signs up? Are you stuck with them for some reason? None of my business really but....

They do not, and they treat me great at the branch I use. The transition from Wachovia to Wells was seamless back when it happened and I have at least eleven accounts with them with the wife, the two boys, the business, credit cards, savings, etc.

Plus they somehow grandfathered an unsecured credit line that I've had since before First Union bought Wachovia. Had it sixteen years. I could never replicate it.

A couple years ago the wife and I did Disney. Spent the week there on the resort. Got a free upgrade from Caribbean Beach (moderate) to Animal Kingdom Lodge (Deluxe). Anyhow, wife did some shopping and used the credit card and gave the girl behind the counter all kinds of info. She either used that info or gave it to one of her friends because we hadn't been home long when we got a call telling us someone in Orlando was trying to charge $1300 to our card at a Big Lots. After some discussion with the fraud person we find out that someone called the card company and told them they'd be in Orlando on vacation and not to be concerned about any charges that happen there. Ballsy! Glad they went ahead and checked with us anyhow. Disney may be the most magical place on earth but they got some villains for employees.

I had two different Chase cards declined the other night when I was trying to use them. Got phone calls the next day wanting to know if I recognized the transactions.

Makes me wonder why the Citi card went through....

Dang!
Gonna have to go back and see if I can't pay that doctors bill again tomorrow.

When we went to the keys the first time, they shut my card down after 3 fuel purchases out of state. I called them and told them "it's me dangit!"
The bad news.....they always know your habits and locations.

Has anyone recieved a compromised cash call? :D
A friend of mine once discovered he had some counterfeit twenties. They came from an ATM.

Go figure.

Remember, Wells Fargo was the one that pressured employees to open so many new accounts to meet quotas that the employees secretly opened new accounts in exisiting customers' names.

Not the best bet for trustworthiness, IMO (though I'm glad they've treated you right). I just refi'd my WF mortgage for a construction-to-permanent loan. Glad to be shed of them. (I doubt new bank is really any better, but the honeymoon ain't over yet, either.)

Someone cloned my Cabela's Visa last month. Annoying, but they shut the transaction down and flagged my account. I didn't find out until my cell phone bill didn't clear because they called an old number. Got everything squared away now. It's the card we use when we don't want to use a debit. Can't believe it lasted as long as it did before it got hacked. Had it nearly 20 years with the same stupid number, they all ended in double zeros. lol

I don't know if you know Disney World can do this, BUT...

When you check into Disney, they can tie your credit card to your account while you're there. Then while you're there, anything you buy through Disney goes through their system and then gets charged to your credit card. This way nobody else gets your credit card information while you're there.

They already have your credit card info from registration and payment, so it's not like you're giving them anything new.

And if you lose your Disney card (or the bracelet thing they use now?), all you have to do is talk to ANY cast member, tell them you lost your card, and they'll IMMEDIATELY cancel your original and issue you another one.

All your normal credit card fraud protections are still in place. But there's an added layer of security and convenience by doing this, because you can instantly stop any use of your card by talking to any cast member...and re-issuing you another card (bracelet, whatever) happens right then, not in 5 to 7 days.

A friend of mine once discovered he had some counterfeit twenties. They came from an ATM.

Go figure.

Getting counterfeit bills SUCKS.

Why?

Because once YOU possess them, YOU LOSE. You will not be reimbursed for them if you try to turn them in anywhere.

The best you can hope for is to notice them quick enough to refuse taking them in face-to-face transactions.

For an ATM? The first thing I'd do is IMMEDIATELY inform the bank, preferably in person. They'll shut that ATM down, pull everything out of it, do a full accounting of all transactions for balance, and then inspect all the bills.

They MIGHT have mercy on you, if they find more counterfeit bills in their machine. But I certainly wouldn't bet the paycheck on that.

Here's what the Department of Treasury has to say about counterfeit bills on their website:

For your personal safety. . . PLEASE:

Do not put yourself in danger.

  1. Do not return the bill to the passer.
  2. Delay the passer with some excuse, if possible.
  3. Observe the passer's description - and their companions' descriptions - and write down their vehicle license plate numbers if you can.
  4. Contact your local police department OR call your local U.S. Secret Service Office.
  5. Write your initials and date in the white border area of the suspected counterfeit note.
  6. DO NOT handle the counterfeit note. Place it inside a protective cover, a plastic bag, or envelope to protect it until you place it in the hands of an IDENTIFIED Secret Service Agent.
  7. Surrender the note or coin ONLY to a properly identified police officer or a Secret Service Special Agent, or mail it to your nearest U.S. Secret Service field office.

Please Note: There is no financial remuneration for the return of the counterfeit bill, but it is doing the "right thing" to help combat counterfeiting.

So here's a question. When dealing with credit card issues, like Visa, are we dealing with Visa? or the bank? I think they said "Wells Fargo" on the phone yesterday afternoon, but I was just curious. I've never fully understood where the card company's involvement ends, and the bank's begins.

I've been with them in some form or fashion since 1992. No gun busters here. They gave me the best rates on my current and previous mortgages. They might be corporately owned but my neighbor is a teller...still feels small town to me.

Mine likewise. They had my mortgage too, till I sold the house.

When mine was stolen, the rep I dealt with was from the bank. It was pretty straightforward, I identified which charges were/weren't mine, they reversed charges, cancelled, and sent out a new card and that was the end of it. No reason to even have a second conversation about it (and no reason to get anyone else involved).

YMMV.

I've had to get two new credit cards in the last 6 months. Both times B of A sent me an email that my card might have been compromised. Both times since I had no charges that were not mine I thought it was a scam so I called and it was true. They said they would be issuing a new card and I would have it within a day or two. The problem is they wouldn't tell me what vendor I was a part of the security breach. They said they just get a notification with the card numbers and they don't know. I wasn't happy about it since if they told me I wouldn't use it there again. I later figured out that's exactly why they didn't want to tell me since they would be losing business since I wouldn't be using it. Another reason I NEVER use my debit card.

Chase sent me a similar letter but advising they had already scheduled closing the account. They didn't offer me any "second chance" and I didn't think about calling to plead for mercy. My credit took a pretty big hit after the account was closed. I suppose loss of that credit line means I'm using a greater percentage of my total available credit now.

Moral? Use those suckers!

They turned off my card once without telling me. It was declined when I tried to use it at the vet. I call and they tell me someone in China had just tried to use the card.

It's nice they're on top of fraud, but they text me for odd purchases to see if it was really me so it would be nice if they had texted me and said "hey, we just turned off that card and are mailing you a new one" instead of having it not work when you go to use it.

I have my once a year cards all plugged into my amazon account, then I just need to remember to switch to them once in a while and use them for an order.

Normally I use my amazon rewards card there for the triple points. If you use amazon smile you can throw some money at GRNC via Rights Watch International.

Your current charity
Rights Watch International
has received
$195.86
as of May 2017

I suppose I should ask them if they actually get the money from Amazon.

I have some kinda relatively new Amazon card that gives a 5% rebate. That should more than pay for Prime.

I just had a fun idea. I simply need to go to Taco Bell once or twice a year, and place multiple orders of one taco each...working my way through all the credit cards in my wallet. Probably a good idea to do it when they're not too busy.

:D

That's good info to have if we ever go back. The last couple visits just haven't been our best experience. Maybe the kid in me has grown up......dammit! I hate it when that happens.

And yeah, we got a little chuckle out of someone trying to spend $1300 at Big Lots too. They must have needed a U-Haul to load all that stuff in.

Disney World was where we had our honeymoon. First time I ever stayed at a resort (it was the Polynesian Resort). It was as if we were royalty, from the time we checked in to the time we checked out. Disney knows which side of their bread is buttered. It ain't cheap (well...actually it kinda was for our honeymoon. The lady I talked to on the phone gave us a good deal to start with because it was after the holiday season, then my sister-in-law to be gave me her Disney employee discount, then the lady on the phone found out it was for our honeymoon. By the time we were done, the whole thing cost me about 1/3 the normal price.)

Disney WANTS your stay to be the best, most memorable stay you've ever had at any amusement park ever. It's amazing the lengths they go through for your convenience, your safety, and your pleasure.

I absolutely agree. They do bend over backwards. We've gotten free behind the scenes tours. Free resort upgrades. Wife and I had breakfast at Animal Kingdoms buffet one morning. She accidentally used some of our dining points to pay for it which had already been allocated. We went to the hotel concierge to transfer it to the credit card. He typed away on the computer and then printed a page showing our points had been restored. I went to hand him the card and he said it was on them. Disney Magic. That was a $50 breakfast. I've got nothing bad to say about Disney or our stays. I think it was more me. After dinner we'd go back to the lodge and just didn't feel like going back out. Didn't see a fireworks display our whole last trip. Like I said, I hate it when that happens.

ok just ordered some 9mm xtp bullets online instead of going into Cabelas cause I don't want to stop for cash so the total business lost for them this month has to be about near $400

Do you really think your $400 is going to hurt Cabela's?

It's the thought that counts.

My wife noticed a charge on hers from Chipolte when the statement arrived yesterday and knew that it was fake because she'd never been there. We went on line and saw it was charged in some town in Georgia on Aug 3rd. There was a $50.00 charge for Home Depot in Atlanta that she didn't make too on Aug 4th. Called the card issuer and they removed the charges as a dispute and made a big deal about how if their stupid "investigation" shows them to be valid that she'd be hit with them. She also had to explicitly ask that the card be closed and she be issued a new one.

Very piss poor customer service regarding a compromised account, and they tried to make it sound like she was trying to pull a fast one. Should be obvious with out of state charges occurring at the same time you're using it in state.
