Concealed carry renewal experiences

My third Mecklenburg renewal took 31 weeks. You are only allowed to apply 30 days before it expires. They know what they're doing And we allow it.
That's simply not true. Mine expires in mid-July, and I applied 4/7 (pic on previous page). Online, they say no more than 90 days. I originally met that requirement, then said forget it and backed it up two more weeks.

Still probably won't get it back before the first one expires, but it out to be close. They said 120+ days, and I did mine somewhere around 105 days ahead of the expiration.

It IS true to me and the other people in the office that day that they would not accept renewal apps from.
The laws on the books and what they actually do are very different things.

Hate that happened to you...and curious as to how long ago that was?

But to say you're only allowed to apply within 30 days definitely isn't the way it always works. Just wanted to make sure that was clear for anybody else reading it. Not sure what each individual will run into, so YMMV.

Other than having to be unarmed, going through a metal detector, and paying my unconstitutional $75 fee, mine was a very quick and easy trip down there...probably less than 5 minutes inside the building.

I know their website currently says no more than 90 days:

I also saw on their homepage where it says they got a huge stack of medical records back after a delay and are going through them. No idea how current that info is.

It appears as though you avoided the $6.75 in service fees that I had to pay.

This made me curious so I pulled my records. They accepted my application on March 16 and I received the email stating my application had been approved on October 5.

203 days!!! Only slightly longer than the 45 days.

Got my E-mail and a Text Cumberland County this AM.
18 working days well actually more like 16 cuze Friday was a drop off, and Monday was a holiday.
Turned in renewal forms on 05 May 17 @ 1430, and today 30 May 17 received the come get it e-mail and text.

Decided today was the day. Pulled into a parking deck and fought with the "Pay Before Parking" machine, only 2nd time I have used this type machine, last time was 5 years ago. Paid for 2 hours, $2, not knowing how long it would take in the SO office. Used their computer to fill out form, paid, and was back at my truck in the parking deck in 15 min. Now if I had only paid for 1 hour, I bet there would have been a crowd instead of just 3. Was not expecting it to go so quickly. She said 45-90 days. The countdown begins.

(Merged the Wake Co thread into this one)

In SC, I tried to renew before 90 days and got shut down. Renewed online with credit card at 88 days and nothing yet. Current permit expires in 20 days from today, so getting nervous. I called SLED yesterday, and quickly got a friendly and helpful person on the other end. They asked for my permit number and said they did receive my renewal, they are just backed up. They also said I would be good on my old permit until the new one came in as long as I have not changed addresses.

The hard part was turning off the "yes ma'am, no sir" responses. I really was unsure if I was talking to a man or woman. Sounded like Pat from SNL back in the day.

Meck Co.

Dropped off paperwork Wednesday, March 15, 2017
Notified it's ready Monday, July 3, 2017

Result: 111 days

Strang part is last renewal I remember getting a bill from a hospital. None this time.

Text? Call? Mail?

I submitted 4/7 and curious what to be on the lookout for. I know my expiration reminder was by mail, but I think maybe they mentioned a text notification?

I knew mine was coming due. Had all the paperwork filled out and ready to hand in. Had an afternoon that cleared out (work related) and had time to run into town. I pulled into the sheriffs office parking lot and was talking to my wife about how the deadline was getting close. I pulled out my CHP to check it and it would have expired that day at midnight. I was only moments away from having to do the class and all the other expenses all over again. I got everything handed in immediately.

Something I discovered is that while you're going through the renewal process, even though your current CHP has expired, you can still carry while they're working on your paperwork.

Dewey could have waved you having to take the class again up to 2 months after the CHP expired (some Sheriffs won't though and bet you can guess a couple of them pretty easy) but you would have lost your ability to carry until your renewal came thru. You probably should have applied for a couple PPPs because FFLs will not allow your "in process of renewal" CHP act as a PPP or act as a NICS check.

Did you get a notice of renewal from the Sheriff's office?

If you fill it out on line (from home, for instance) it says to be prepared to make an appointment during that on-line session for the in-person visit. I wonder how long those are taking in Wake County? Mine expires in 7 months.

And I was just there for a change of address update at the sheriff's office. Those parking payment machines are the worst. Not intuitive at all. Made me want to shoot it, but of course my pistol was in the truck.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I did. It was one of those things I would get to later. Fortunately I wasn't shopping for anything during that time.

Durham County

Initiated and paid for renewal online 4/3. Set appt to drop off paperwork and sign forms a couple days later.

I am at 90 days and counting... Was told it will be at least another week when I called to check on status.

My CHP expired at the end of June, and while it is still ok to carry concealed since I have initiated the renewal, I was told I can't use the expired CHP for a pistol purchase.

Lesson learned... Start the renewal even earlier next time.

I renewed earlier this year (Feb). Tried to do so online, but the website wasn't working correctly and told me there were no available appointments until July 2017...well after my expiration. When I called the SO, they said 'yeah, we know there's a problem. Come on down and we'll work you in.' I was one of one customers in the office that morning. Used their computer to key in my renewal info. Paid my fee to the lady at the window and was done inside 10 minutes. Renewal came in 68 days later.

The trick at the WCSO is to forget the appointment and just go visit them as soon as they open in the morning. I've been telling CCH students to do that for a couple of years and it's worked for all of them so far.

How far in advance of the CHP expiration date can one go to the SO and submit renewal papers and fees?

Let the countdown begin...

Fingers crossed I can keep my mouth shut if they ask a stupid question about the process...especially since I'll have an empty holster in my belt. o_O

ETA: other than paying $75 to exercise a right, it was fairly painless. 3-4 minutes...no line, just handed him the paperwork and cash, he signed a couple spots and marked where I had to sign and date. Quick raising of right hand to "swear" it was all correct to the best of my knowledge (which was kinda odd standing there at the counter), got a receipt for the payment and headed out.
Got the text & email that permit was approved.

Filed 4/7/17
Expired 7/22/17
Approved 8/2/17

Way to go Meck!!

Two bits of aditional info...

The good: they laminated my permit after I signed it...hadn't had Meck do that before
The bad: it was actually approved 7/18 (old one expired 7/22, and I got a call, text and voice mail on 8/2)

Received my Wake County renewal yesterday, renewed it on May 15th, it took 80 days.
I filed the renewal on the website 88 days prior to expiration.

Kinston, got the letter 90 days out, went down and paid cash to avoid the 7ish dollar credit card fee, spent about 10 minutes in the office filling out the renewal form on their old PC, if PC mouse germs bother you do it at home, thought about the horror of overly long sentences, guard at the door let me right in then spent a few minutes making sure my wife didn't have cuticle siccors, asked about them twice, perhaps he was traumatized once, went back 3 weeks later and picked up the new card, office staff are all friendly, 5 stars, would renew there again.

So I'm about to renew mine in Wake for the first time and was looking over the forms and instructions for the appointment. Is this new or an error in the list of required items to renew?

Exemption from Firearms Course – must be completed by retired law enforcement officers, current law enforcement officers or personnel licensed/registered by the North Carolina Private Protective Services Board.

Got my notice from Chatham County.
Meh, a bunch of nasty paperwork. Don't remember having to do anything Doctor related in Wake Co.

Same thing with my CHP, which only took 165 days from the date I made my appt for prints, etc. in Mecklenburg.

I was notified 2 weeks after the approval. I believe they approve then send whatever to the state, and there is a two week turnaround for that, IIRC.

When I have to renew, if we still can in 4 years, I'm going to go there a couple weeks early as a walk in and see what happens.

Post your processes and experiences, if you will.

South Carolina makes the process incredibly easy in an online renewal process that requires three things:

1. Your CWP number, located of your permit.
2. A credit/debit card for the $50 fee.
3. About two minutes of your time online.

Here is the SLED link:

https://www.sled.state.sc.us/sled/default.asp?Category=CWPR&Service=CWPR

The conditions for online renewal of your SC CWP are listed there. Basically, if nothing has changed since the last time you applied (same name, address, phone number, etc.) AND you are within 89 days of your expiration date OR have not expired more than 60 days, you are good to go with online renewal.

If you don't meet these criteria, then it has to be a paper application renewal, and an address is provided for that.

If you agree to the terms, the site takes you to another page with two fields to fill in. One is for your CWP number, the other is for your Social Security Number. (The SSN is not retained.)

Submitting that takes you to the method of payment page, where you enter your credit/debit card info for the $50 fee.

And that's it! You're done!

At some point, a new CWP card will be mailed. I'll post when it happens so we can have a time frame for this.

As an interesting side note, South Carolina actually mailed me a post card reminder to renew my CWP as soon as I was in the window to do so. Mighty nice of them, I thought!
Very nice! NC did allow me to apply for a purchase permit online, which was nice, but then I had to go sign a mental health record re!ease or something, to allow them to see if I'm crazy. The permits took a couple of weeks. CC appears to take an age here though, depending on your county....

UPDATE. Mecklenburg County

I applied for renewal on June 22, 2017. That's 111 days ago. Still no new permit. I checked the "order checker" on the Mecklenburg Sheriff website. It showed that the State received my payment and application but suggested that it had not assigned an investigator. That bothered me a bit, so I called the Mecklenburg Sheriff's Department. They were very nice. Said that my renewal was approved some time ago. They are waiting for the permit to arrive from Raleigh. Should be here sometime in the next week or so.

What did we learn here? Well, the "order checker" function is not accurate in Mecklenburg.

Initial permit is $90. Renewal should be $75.

looks like its gone up - forsyth county site says

Location
Application for a handgun permit takes place at the Forsyth County Public Safety Center located at 301 N. Church Street, Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

Fee
Renewal Application - $80.00 (includes notary fee)

im sure its not about the money - they just want to keep us safe

WakeCo...got my card in mail probly month ago. 90days B4 expire i renewed online, paid and set apptmt for today. Parking deck next to sheriff office full of course. 2 blocks away found street parking. Paid the no armed bandit parking machine. Walked 4 blocks. Waltzed rt in the office. Handed in paperwork. Signed 2 forms and was on my way. This process is absolute BS. What is the point of the on line part if you still have to go down there??? It should be like NCDL.

Wake Co.

Submitted the renewal application online, then made the appointment to submit/sign the paperwork. That was done on 1/17/18. Renewal received on 3/31/18. So all in all, about a 10 week turnaround from submittal to receipt. Not bad considering how busy the permit office was when I went in and the nice Clerk telling me it could take up to 90 days.

Wake County: Same experience for me. I parked my car and I was back and leaving the parking deck (4 blocks away) in less than 20 minutes. The only thing the online part did was cut down how much time I spent in the Sheriff's office. The fact that I still had to go downtown is rediculous.

"The only thing the online part did was cut down how much time I spent in the Sheriff's office." Always a good thing. Is it up to the sheriff's to decide the process?

My wife and I went down to the Sheriffs Office in Bladen this past Wednesday. I received the renewal forms on April 17. Our permits expire June 2nd. We were told that we had to have the forms submitted 30 days before they expire. They gave us roughly 41 days. We filled out the renewal forms and paid them $150 cash. We'll see what happens.

Update: We both received our permits 34 days of submitting them.
