As a tangent to the discussion of one chambering, how many of you make sure that you have more than one firearm for each chambering so that all your thousands of rounds of ammo for that chambering would not be useless if your one firearm for that chambering broke?

I have multiples for each caliber with any significant ammo stock.

There are certain firearms (mainly HD and SD types) I even have at least 2 of that specific firearm because in some cases 2 is 1 and 1 is none. If 1 AR throws a fit I might not be in a position to break it down and trouble shot it so that 2nd one is a “quick fix” until time allows.

I guess you you call it multiple redundancy?

I want is all the justification I need.

I will have to narrow it down one day so I don't burden the wife and kids when I die.

Only caliber I own (pistol or rifle) that I only have one gun for is .454 casull.I have a lever action rifle that shoots it but no pistol.

Crap forgot about the Hi Point 10mm rifle. No 10mm pistol anymore.

If the gun feels good in my hands I don't worry about the ammo it uses. ;)

Clearly I don't have enough 9mm ammo... would hafta break 8 pistols before I would be done chootin' Hi-Powers, and then there's a few other 9mm pistols to break, before I'd be done.

Having worked for the government for 30 years, i recieved enough mandatory diversity training to fill the Grand Canyon. My primary takeaway is diversity in weaponry. Right tool for the job kinda thing. Plus i just love all the different sensations from a collection of calibers and platforms. VARIETY is the spice of life.

I tried the ammo consolidation. I did actually let the Mosin go to drop 7.62x54R.

Always had 22LR, 45ACP, 12 gauge, 38sp (wife's revolver). Inherited a couple of 410s, but rarely shoot them - one elderly one can't be shot because the stock needs repair anyway (grandfather's old shotgun).

Got an older Marlin 30-30 - it ain't going nowhere :)

Lots of M2 30-06, because M1 Garanditis (4 of them) and CMP having M2 surplus to sell (until lately). By the way, that's my least favorite thing to stockpile. When you're pushing 5k rounds of THAT, it's both bulky and heavy... If I had something in 50BMG, I might feel differently...

Lots of 5.56/.223 because, well, lots of ARs. My favorite no-Fudd/no-lib caliber :)

Then I had to have an AR in 7.62/308. Well, since I had that caliber, then came the M1 in 308 :D (See what I did there? Added another rifle without adding a caliber...)

Found a great deal on a S&W 586 revolver, which is 357 magnum; well, you GOT to buy that to shoot it through there, even though 38sp is OK :)

Had 9mm, got out of it, then accumulated some small - and some big - 9mm pistols. So that one came, went, came again.

Had 380, got out of it (only one pistol), then got an LCP custom for a really small pistol when nothing else will fit. So that one came, went, came again.

Inherited my granny's S&W hand ejector in 32 S&W long. So I had to get a small pile of that.

I've never been all that enamored of 40 or 10mm or other non-22LR rimfire calibers. I wouldn't mind an M1 carbine and its ammo, but prices on those are stupid for what they are. And I can't promise that some milsurp, or some revolver chambered in 45LC, or some other hunting rifle caliber like 270 or 243, or some long range thing like 6.5 Creedmore or 6.8 flavor-of-the-month, might not show up. I just can't :D

My wife, as pro-2A as she is, does sometimes think we resemble one of the NSWC Crane bunkers just a wee bit too much. But the Great Ammo Drought set me to stockpiling, like it did so many others.

I was basically down to 9mm and 5.56 (except for my old Glock 40 caliber which i don't use) and then i let people talk me back into 22lr, 45, and added 300 blk. I think I was happier with just 9mm and 556.

Millie, when i started shooting again about 4 years ago i switched to 9MM for one main reason. It is cheaper to shoot. However, after doing some research i found out the state of Hollow Points had progressed far enough that I felt comfortable carrying it for protection. For 25 years i carried a Sig P220 in .45ACP for self defense. 9mm is much easier on the recoil side and if you shoot strings fast this matters, its cheaper to shoot it a lot and you need to shoot a lot to get good. Studies show that all the calibers are on par now as far as real world threat stoppage. You can get a lot of bullets with a 9mm too. Having more bullets is probably better than having less. I still have a a few Sig P220's and i still take them to classes and shoot them. But i prefer the 9mm now. Its a no brainer if you shoot a lot.

Won't do it. I've got five different calibers just in my carry guns! Besides, I don't own handguns just for personal protection. It's fun just to shoot them. I like the variety of guns and calibers and even the older milsurp items for their historical value. I shoot them all and reload them all as well. For me, its not a one size fits all.

I tried so hard to cut all the calibers down. I have failed hard.
I'm ultimately proud to not own a .40cal.
If I only got to shoot one round for the rest of my life, I'd have to go with .500. Have to. But it's expensive.

For those of you who have failed to consolidate on one handgun caliber, good for you.! "Variety is the spice of life"

For anyone who has succeeded in consolidating, time to move on to your liquor cabinet. After all, who needs more than one kind of booze?
