I am going on a fishing trip to fort fisher this weekend and I am stumped on the limits allowed. The plan was to go down early Saturday morning to hopefully leave time for bait gathering before the sun comes up. Now we are potentially going Friday after work. The concern I have with going earlier is how many fish we are allowed to keep. Let’s say we start fishing at 8pm Friday night and catch 3 legal flounder before midnight. Saturday morning rolls around and I jump in my kayak at sun up and I catch 4 legal flounder before heading home. Is it legal for me to keep all 7 flounder being I caught them on two separate days. I have no intentions of trying to skirt the rules but haven’t been able to find anything about possession limits, only daily limits.

Daily refers to each 24 hour period. You could catch a limit between 11:00 pm and 12:00 am and then catch another limit between 12:01 am and 1:00 am and technically be legal. This applies to freshwater. Now whether or not you can convince the Warden of your timeline would be the question.
I don't have the saltwater regs handy so you may want to confirm those.....

I called the marine fisheries office this morning and would like to share what they told me. She said that the limit is per trip. So according to her if we bank fish Friday and kayak fish Saturday we are only allowed one limit per person. She also informed me that it isn’t allowed to share coolers for our catch. If we are on separate vessels, kayaks in this instance, that my buddy and I have to have separate coolers or we could be over the limit if we both have a good day. Thanks for the reply Bailey Boat.

I question about the limit per trip rather than the limit per day. From what she said, you could go get a limit, take it to your truck, go get another limit, take it to your truck, go get another limit,... I suppose it depends on what is meant by a trip? Did she say anything about a possession limit? I would want more clarification.

That’s wrong. It’s per 24 hours, that’s why if you charter a boat for 1/2 day trip you always get the morning. The captain counts as a person and you get to keep more fish. His second trip doesn’t get that unless he just didn’t limit out.

The web site lists the limits per day and says nothing that I can find about possession limit. That would mean that you could catch one limit each day but could not make several trips during one day and catch a limit on each trip. You could take home three limits if you fish three days. That is what I understand. I think she was misleading by saying trip.

Her explanation of trip was that if you leave on Friday on a boat and return to port on Sunday you can only take one limit per person. I don’t want to have any issues with the fisheries cops while down there but I do believe that we would be in the right if we kept a limit on Friday and on Saturday. Our plans are undecided at this point but I’m leaning towards just going Saturday to make it simple for what we can keep.
