Here is my “pretty steel CZs” collection. I have competed with the SP-01 and it is excellent

I feel like this may be the gun that helps me actually like shooting handguns...

Ok folks, what are the MUST DO upgrades for this gun. I will probably just use it for IDPA since a buddy shoots it and wants me to shoot with him. Also, the 17 round MecGar mags the way to go?

Just shoot it in a match or two. After that you'll know what you need to replace to improve if any.

CD

IMO, it’s the best handgun for the money available.

Really!

My wife rented one at a range and loved it too!

Maybe I should get one.

Which model should I start with?

If you intend on carrying it:

P-01
P-07
PCR

The P-01 is just classy and rugged at the same time. The p-07 is a Glock killer for me, so go with that if you want to stick with polymer.
The PCR is basically the P-01 without a rail, so still awesome just slightly less options.

Seriously, though...I think @B00ger nailed it for carry options. I carry a P01 myself.
If it's going to be a range toy, go full size.
SP01 is a great option
SP01 Phantom if you want to stay with polymer.
Shadow 2 if you want to skip the b.s. and go top shelf.

Yeah, my stable compared to a man named CZFool is quite pitiful...but he is also correct in his "larger sized" options. The SP-01 is amazing, I have the tactical model with the threaded barrel and suppressor height sights and absolutely love it. Its a bit garish for OC during polite times, so I would recommend the basic CZ75 or a non-tactical SP-01.

I have been listening to y'all singing their praises for a while now. I will have to shoot one before I buy as I have made that mistake too many times.

@draco88, what's up with the LGBTQAOBZ? model in the image?

Take good care of my shiny one there.

Thats wifeys, and yeah, I catch a ration of shit about it lol.
@LeeMajors loves it...calls it the Jeff Gordon model. Says he wants one, too

But there is a think you need to know about CZ's. You will catch grief from Glock Fanboys who blindly cling to the belief that their Austrian plastic is superior to the Czech offerings. Despite being less ergonomic, less aesthetics, the same reliability, and the same durability. I like Glocks...I think they are perfectly acceptable firearms that work well. But they are like eating a steak at Outback. You will enjoy the experience usually, but you will forget it within a few days. A CZ is like going to a butcher, having them hand carve you the perfectly marbled filet, and then going home and having it personally grilled to perfection. Its something that will stick with you. You will still be able to enjoy the simplicity of having someone cook a steak for you, but you will always know that you can do it better yourself.

I totally support the whole "Shoot one before you buy it" mentality...but most CZs are the only pistol I feel comfortable purchasing without doing that.

The Glock boys and their Gucci guns don't bother me, I am more of a metal gun fan myself. I have 2 plastic guns (a Taurus 809C, and a SA XDS) that were won at an FNRA banquet.

But that thing @draco88 owns gives competition to and Gucci Glock I've ever seen.

And a P-01 at a decent price is going to run you around $600...those Gucci glocks are $500 + new trigger + slide work + Stippling + internals + cerakoting which turns a $500 pistol into a $1,000-1,500 pistol that shoots like a stock $600 pistol but retains zero resell value.

I developed my love for the CZ type guns shooting a Tanfoglio Witness pistol. I got a polymer 40, and my wife got the same in 9mm. For the longest time, they were our favorite range guns. She now has her own CZ97 (45acp) that is her favorite range gun, and I have a CZ P09 and 75 B, but a steel-frame Witness 45 is one of my all time favorites. The poly 9mm can be found for ~ $300, one of the best deals on the market IMHO.

I feel like there are some things you need to know as well if you are considering a CZ.
CZ is a great gun, but not without its flaws, too. The sights are useable out of the box but imho need upgrading asap (with the exception of the supressor ready models. They seem to be pretty decent).
If it is going to be for carry, the Compact/PCR/P01 all come with rubber grips that will catch on a cover garment and screw you up. Change those out asap.
Although it seems CZ is phasing them out, some models come with a magazine that has a thick rubber baseplate. They'll snag cover garments, too. So, if it's going to be for carry, change those, too.
Out of the box, the trigger is merely ok. Long and gritty. Dry fire and shoot it. A lot. It will smooth up and be a good one in time, but LOP will still be the same. Seems like I noticed the difference in most of mine somewhere around 7-800 pulls.

Completely agree about the grips. The stock grips feel great and shoot well, but they are pretty sticky and, lets face it, bland looking. That's why in this tread nearly no pistols are still wearing their stock black rubber grips. On the bright side though, replacement grip panels are massively plentiful in dozens of different styles and colors and cuts, and most all are <$50, so you can have multiple...or as some have stated "change them to fit your outfit".

That's funny!

After wearing OD or Woodland Camo most of my life, stylish appearance has never been big on my list!

I do like the weathered appearance of @draco88's P01 though!

If you can't fire one easily, go pick one up, hold it down at your waist and notice how it fits your hand, pick a spot on the wall, point at it, then look at your sights. They have the best natural point of aim of any gun I've fondled. After knowing that for 20 years I finally recently got one. Now I want to shoot the poly strikers to possibly replace my Glock EDC's.

Easy there... some of us think they're both the best fitting and functioning SD handguns on the market.
I'll step over a M&P or Sig without picking them up.

To each their own! You could not GIVE me a Glock though.

I have fired a few and I just DO NOT like the way they fit my hand. I have bought too many guns that I could not stand after a couple hundred rounds. I'd never get to a couple hundred with Glock. I have a P220 and P229 I absolutely love. Never missed a single round with either. I just had an RDS put on my 229 and love it. Had a 938 I gave to my brother, tried an M17 and a 365 too - keep em!

I'm old, ugly and opinionated. Luckily my wife is blind!

I get it, I've a P229 safe queen that doesn't fit me and the NPA is wayyy off. I bought it only as an investment when they were fetching $800 used, now I'd be lucky to get $400 for it. Sig's tendency to fire when dropped, have a pre-loaded striker, and use the buyer as a test bed is another reason I'll pass on their newer products.
The mid and small Glocks (G26, 27/19, 23) fit me perfect, and I've never had a failure in 20 years with either. I've a G34 and the NPA is off due to the longer grip.

Agreed, SOME, or CERTAIN, models have had issues of a tendency to fire when dropped. I don't believe that was on SA/DA metal guns being carried with a full pipe but decocked. If wrong, please show me.

Anybody can cherry pick a specific scenario and blow it out of proportion.

Opinions are like buttholes, everybody's got one, and they all stink!

I thought the drop bang was only the poly 320’s (I could have the # wrong). The P226/229 are fine pistols, they just don’t fit me.

I apologize if I responded too strongly. My Sigs are older and I have only been 100% pleased!
No worries. Like I said, my P229 is a very nice, a well made tool that just doesn't fit me quite so well. I'm a bit miffed, I bought it as an investment before Sig started mass producing cheaper pistols and driving the prices way down on the higher quality metal guns. They cheapened their brand.

I think only the original P320s have that issue. The newer ones with the flat trigger don’t (if I remember correctly). Does support your test bed theory, though

I think their 'fix' was to replace the metal trigger with a lighter plastic one

What do you guys recommend using for dry fire practice, snap caps (which ones) or the o-ring method?
