Piling up parts so when it all arrives, I’m ready to go...

CZ457 ProVarmint is getting an Area419 30 MOA scope mount. Putting a Vortex PST 5-25x50 on it.

I figure I have to get a low set of rings since the scope base is tall. What should I look at running? I believe in doing it right once.

Take the outside radius of your scope and add a couple millimeters for clearance. Say 3 or 4...

Next, take the sum of the rail height over the barrel plus the distance from the rail to the center of the rings. Make sure this value is bigger than the first value.

If you’ve got the scope you can stack pennies under it while it’s sitting in the scope base to figure out the height of the rings you need.

I like the looks of the American rifle company rings but seekins are pretty affordable and do what they need to.

Ive been using Mountain Tech by Warne on my rifles the last couple of years.
No complaints yet.

eyeballing those. Their website has a nice little tutorial on how to measure stacking pennies too. Lol.

Due to the 419 rail, I’m afraid a QD mount might end up too tall. I originally thought about a QD since that scope will be the nicest one I own and if I wanted to mess w zeroing it I could move it over to other rifles.

Are you planning on switching out the stock as well?

No immediately. I’m not looking for a heavy bench gun. I may carry it in the woods and pluck squirrels one day.

10-4 on walking around with it, I’ve got a cz that’s pretty heavy although I do carry it with a sling quite a bit. I think the optic might add more of a weight problem than the stock. Either way sounds like your on track for a sweet shooter. Be sure and post pictures when you get it all together.

Edited to add: not sure if that came across right. I’ve been shooting a 5x25 pst and think I’ll definitely try to cut weight in the optic department for a woods gun. Also looking at switching to 10-22. The vortex works great for plinking at longer 22lr ranges though.

Yeah the scope will add some weight but not sure how to avoid that and still get the magnification. And I don’t have 5k for better glass.

I run Burris signature Zee rings on my 455 with Are419 rail. They are light weight and strong. What I really like about them is they use an adjustable plastic sleeve/clamping system in between your scope and the metal part of the rings. It's two-fold in that it will not mar you scope at all AND the ring inserts allow you 5-20 MOA of adjustment by changing out different sizes. Pretty neat system and I definitely recommend them.

I have always used this site as a guide:
http://www.mil-rad.com/scope_ring_calculator
They have your scope in there with predefined measurements, which is great because as another user said, you can’t just use 50mm as the bell measurement. It also reminds you not to forget scope caps! Vortex defenders eat that open space up quickly!

But the person who suggested waiting until you have the scope and using pennies or something similar has the best idea. I actually just used printer paper last time I did it.

Depends on what you are looking for. Are you looking so that you can have the scope as close to the barrel as possible or best height for your setup? I tried the whole (it must be as close as possible thing for a while) and then realized how much more comfortable and therefore fun shooting can be when I ditched that idea and went with what is comfortable. This is especially important when you don’t have an adjustable cheek rest. With no adjustable cheek rest, I always suggest testing first.

With only a 50mm bell, you can get by with low-medium rings as you said (words depend on the manufacturer). My go to height is usually 1.1” but you are probably ok going a touch lower at 1”. Again, I would test with your scope and your setup. On second thought, that 30moa might not fit that low...

Get that right first and then worry about the manufacturer and style. I personally like higher rings, allowing me to set up more vertically. Depends on how you are shooting though.

You need to get a height that is comfortable for your shooting style. I have had people tell me that my scope looks to high. I tell them that it is comfortable for me. It doesn't matter what other people think, it's your gun.

Thank you one and all for contributing. Should see the rifle this coming week and I’m going to order the scope base and scope Monday or Tuesday.

will probably stack pennies and try to get this set up running by mid October.
