Damn, that's a big fish!

Freshwater drum/sheepshead. That lake is full of 2-5 lb smallies and walleyes. Most people are out there fishing with light line and tackle so a 36 lb fish can wreak havoc on your day. I caight an 18 lb catfish out there once with 6 lb test and that took a few minutes.

So why call it a sheepshead when it's not a sheepshead and it's a Freshwater Drum? Sheepshead are salt water. I don't call it a salt water drum. We gotta stop yankeefying fish.

It must be a science thing. Like that we lost a planet and tomato's are a fruit. I've always known them as drum, so my guess is the new reporter had no clue and called it a sheepshead. It is a freshwater drum. Crappie, bream? Who knows? It is a big ugly fish. On light tackle.

They actually call those freshwater drum sheephead in Canada. I think he's on the wrong forum.

Why is a sea trout called a trout when it is not? Why is a largemouth bass called a bass when it is a sunfish? How many different local names are there for crappie? Taxonomists try to make a little order out of chaos by assigning scientific name, but even those names can change. The scientific name for rainbow trout is quite different from what it was 35 years ago. They even put it into a different Genus. Local names work just fine most of the time but can get confusing to people from other areas.

What is a green trout, a pogie, or a speck?

That lake is in NY and probably about 1.5 hours from Canada so there is probably cultural bleed over. On Lake Champlain you can fish NY, VT and Canadian waters. But the Canadians don't look kindly on people from the US fishing their water without a license. On my trips to Champlain I have been warned about accidentally crossing into Canada. Supposedly they will arrest you and confiscate your boat and gear. That's just wrong.

But the entire point is...it is a big fish.

I would just like to say that this is a CRAP E, not a CROP E.
