I have a Dan Wesson 357 from the 80's Serial # 240xxx. Can this gun take a steady diet of 357 Mags? Not looking to overpressure, but I want to handload a 158gr bullet to max published load info for hunting deer and back up for pigs.

Yes it'll handle full bore 357 all day long. But 1) work up a load just for this gun and 2) check the cylinder gap if it's new to you.

I don't think you need to load a max charge in 357 to take NC game. A 170gr bullet moving 1000 to 1200 fps would do the trick.

Just want to add... I have a 14-2 from that era and while it is built like a tank it started showing flat primers and sticky cases at less than max loads.

I have never understood the need for a lesser weapon (handgun) to "back up" a primary weapon (rifle/shotgun)
Reload the primary and continue....

I will work up to max and use the most accurate load my gun likes. I just don't want to damage the gun, if it's not really up to the task. I have been shoots a lot of 38 special handloads through the gun, about 1000 rounds in the past year. I've been loading a coated 125gr bullet to 1000 fps.

A backup is for the times when the Angel of Fate pisses in the frizzen of your flintlock. When your primary won't run or can't be quickly brought back into the fight.

And we have witnessed it first hand in Dunn. I wouldn't have had a clue what happened had you not recognized it standing there in broad daylight.

For the others, a brass case head separation (case head was ejected from the firearm, but the rest of the brass was stuck up in the chamber), rendered a bone stock S&W M&P 9 totally useless until two individuals, both competent with tools , and one very competent with M&P's could finally wrestle that brass out of the chamber. For me, that experience totally illustrated how "two is one, and one is none."

Those with bolt guns facing a pissed off hog or anything else for that matter would probably appreciate everything weapon like on their person. Even more so in the event of a malfunction. I'm with fieldgrade, two is one and one is none. Can't imagine hearing, "Gee, sure am ticked I had my revolver with me all day because I didn't have a primary failure or a close encounter."

I do feel nekkid without a pistol on my hip, even with a rifle in my hands.

Geeze..... some of you guys..... Tell the truth now, when was the last time you stood before a "pissed off hog" with ANY gun in your hand?? When was the last time you even SAW a hog outside the grocery store?? I can only imagine your fright if a marauding squirrel happen to come along.... How many of you carry a pocket full of condoms just in case you come across a beautiful, naked girl??

Never. I've also never pulled my edc from my holster because I was attacked by anyone but I still take it with me. I guess we are the overprepared and underwhelmed and you are the other guy. I mentioned hogs because it was part of the OP's question.

Believe it or not, some folks actually get out in the woods and hunt hogs, with dogs and knives. And you would be hard pressed to find one that doesn't carry.

And let's not forget old "Murphy" you just never know the circumstances/conditions/malfunctions that can happy at any given time of any given day prepared/overprepared/underprepared or not. I always carry a backup to my rifle, and I always have a backup to my primary handgun.
I've had some pretty crazy things happen while "practicing" for a bad situation, like having my revolver fail, it does happen.

I always carry my GP100 357 when I deer hunt, and will use it before my rifle for closer shots. It also took care of 2 wild dogs who tried to attack me walking from my blind. My revolver is much easier and faster to use than a rifle slung on my back.

Woah for a second I thought we were talking about 357 dan Wesson loads.

Good thing you good people put us back on the right track.

God forbid if we went on a tangent.

Yup, kinda got off track....
Here's my go to 357 load.

-Winchester brass
-CCI 450 primer(yes, I know it's a rifle primer)
-Hornady 158gr. XTP
-16gr. H110 powder
-crimp with Lee FCD

This is .7 below Hodgen's max load, but still 1150-1175 fps in my 6" Ruger, and very accurate. I use 450 primers because my 6.8 and .223 also use them, and it keeps things more simple. I worked up to this load with rifle primers, and advise anyone else do the same.

Most people use rifle primers in magnum loads.
I use em in my 454 casull loads.
The burn the powder more complete in the shorter barrels and handle the pressure better. Don't feel like you're weird

The SRM primers gain around 25 fps over SPM in my testing. Requires less powder and both kinds of primers cost the same. Less=more is always good!

I stood before a pissed-off hog just the other day inside an Ingles grocery store.....I distracted her with an open bottle of YooHoo and a sack of HotFries as I clambered over the shelves and made my getaway with no shots fired....Weapon on my hip?? 4" DW M15 full lug.
