So I finally got around to taking a stab at an 80% AR lower.

My main hobby is riding dirtbikes and after breaking six bones back in March I've been looking for things to do to stay busy.

Several years ago when you could still get the Romanian "G" style AK kits with barrels I did one of those and it was a fun project. Always thought it would be fun to try the others. 1911 and polymer 80 Glock are still on the list.

This was with the "easy jig gen 1"

It's a good kit. Easy to use. Simple instructions. Anybody could do it. I was able to barrow it from someone so really I didn't have many excuses not to crank out a new toy. I think my only complaint would be that it only does ar-15 lowers. If I were to buy one I'd probably shop for one that can also do an ar-10

The 80percentarms billet lower was a lot softer then doing a genaric 7075 lower. They didn't specify what it was but I assume it was 6061.

If you haven't don't this before go ahead and buy at least one extra end mill bit before you start. You can get them on amazon for $20 but make sure you don't buy one with a cutting area longer then an inch or it will eat your jig.

If you can set up a shop vac wile you work it will gobble up most of the mess.

Shop vac taped right to the jig with a trash can underneath. Captures most of the mess.

I wasn't able to do more then 1/32 per pass without it starting to jump. On the softer lower I could go a tad more but that was about it. Just take your time it doesn't take that long.IMG_20191111_155459.jpg

Didn't take pictures of the trigger pocket or safety selector/trigger pins being done. Your not missing much...

It turned out pretty good. Definitely learned some stuff. It will certainly be useable and it kept me busy for the afternoon. Wish I could do an ar-10...

I plugged all the holes with cut off Q-tips and sprayed it with black aluma-hyde II. It's curing by the wood stove

Just got a new media booth last week. Next project will probably be blasting and painting the rusty pump .22

Neat project, thanks for posting it!

So you punched out the starter holes with the drill press, then switched to the plunge router to finish?

Yeah if I were to buy one I'd definitely get one that does more. I barrowed the gen1 though so I really can't complain too much.

Dkmatthews yes exactly. You hog out as much as you can with the drill template first before switching to the router. It's a faster way to remove materiel and also gives you a hole to start the end mill bit in when.you increase depth.
