So I already have a complete 556 type AR pistol lower and would like to put a dedicated 22lr upper on it. Eventually I will build two dedicated 22 ar uppers for the kids. I want the opportunity to change the upper back out to a 556 when the time is right.

What is an affordable quality option?

Built this one for my 11 yr old. Cmmg dedicated bolt and 8 or 9” barrel. Can’t remember exactly. The dedicated 22lr route is expensive compared to 5.56 etc. but Righttobear.com has the bcg’s and barrels at some the better prices. I’ve seen 22modsforall have kits at a decent price but can’t speak to their quality. I will say that everyone that shoots that pistol loves it from 11 to too old to name. Good luck!

Price out the upper, and then consider just buying an M&P 15-22. ;)

If I bought just an upper for swapping I’d go CMMG for $475-500 ... but as Waylon said complete MP 15-22 out of the box can be had under $400 (or better if you catch a sale) and be done with it.

I second CMMG, I had one that would run so dirty it looked like it had black gravy in it.

PSA has the 15-22 for $319.99 right now.

They run this deal every once in awhile, and maybe even with free shipping?

I found it a lot cheaper to just get a 15-22 than to build it. I find the 15-22 mags to be more reliable than a lot of the other mags so even if you do go the dedicated build route than I would get the adapter that allows you to run 15-22 mags.
