Dedicated "truck gun"?

I never leave a gun in the car or truck .I've had a couple stolen ,never again. I always have it on my hip. When my pants go on it's there, when my pants come off my gun comes off. Never more than an arms length away. . One in bathroom. night stand (both sides of bed),end tables in Living room. When I go to Durham I always have 2 handguns and if I feel the need I grab my Rock River AR pistol and throw it in the vehicle with me

This has been tagging along in the truck lately......when I get to work I just take them to my office.....we are very gun friendly. I don't leave stuff unattended in the vehicle. I always have a handgun with me and don't carry the "rifle caliber pistols" with me always but when there have been recent social ugliness I feel its wise to have more "reach out and touch" with me.

As far as the "hey there's a guy with a rifle, let's shoot him from 200 yards away and take his shit" factor." ....just have the weapon on your back in a discreet case/tennis ratchet style bag. I think many worry too much about possible scenarios/SHTF "what if" events you would have no real control over when it happens. Only thing you can control is what you have with you when it starts.

I have also been thinking about situations where I may have to leave the cars behind. Revenant and lone survivor stories are super rare and if i get injured i am most likely done so I need to stay clear of trouble.

I agree with you that a rifle seems like a big shoot me sign (when it comes to "good" and bad guys).

I currently have a get home bag that has a glock 17 that would become my primary and my carry gun would become a backup. I am trying out an optic on a second Glock 17 and it may also get added to the bag. It is far easier to carry/conceal 2-3 pistols that use the same 21 Rd mags than a much more bulky Ar/with its own mags. I am thinking the optic on the second 17 is going to help me close that 200 yd gap if needed but the primary goal is to move discreetly and off the road when possible.,

Snipers in wait always have the advantage and I don't think I can carry enough rifles for every situation and stay low profile. I do think the long gun would be more of a hindrance.
Yes. You need to able to blend into the crowd if necessary. I've been promoting a GHB carry package like this for years... Keep the short mag in for concealability and the 33rd'ers for reloads.

If cost is a factor, the KCI mags are decent. You just have to inspect them for burrs and manufacturing irregularities, like inside liner edges. There's one off brand that I can't remember the name of that did not work well. The Glock mags rock, but some of the older ones are not drop free.

Fortunately, because of where I work, I am able to avail myself of "samples" from industry reps on a somewhat regular basis.

Now that I have the Roni set up with a Glock 17, and a 9mm AR that takes Glock mags, I have been running the piss out of some aftermarket mags.

At this point, I am comfortable saying that I trust my life to the MagPul Glock mags, including their 27 rounder. I trust them just as much as the Glock factory mags, and infinitely more than KCI.

I have also been running the ETS brand Glock mags. Despite their translucent appearance, that unfortunately reminds me of Ramline Mags from the 80s, they have yet to fail me.

I am not ready to give the ultimate stamp of approval yet to the ETS mags, but, I trust them more than the KCI mags.

Not trying to pick on KCI, and I'm sure they can be made to run well, but, I feel we have better aftermarket choices nowadays.

Incidentally, my sweet spot for the rifle and the Roni are the MagPul 21 round mags. They will be in the guns when I need to participate in the unpleasantness. They are too handy. The size footprint is perfect for carrying or concealing those guns.

My dedicated truck gun is the gun that's riding on me AIWB. That said, if necessary I can secure it in a Lock'er Down console safe on a temporary basis. (I use one with a four digit combination rather than the keyed version.) Five minutes to install and a bit of peace of mind.

Nice! How does it bolt in?

I've been intrigued by these for a while. Is the saftey also a decocker?

The one I linked to is a frame mounted safety, not a decocker. I have seen a version offered online that had a slide mounted decocker, but they must be pretty rare. The nice thing I like about the safety on these, though, is that as long as the hammer is cocked, the safety can be left on and the slide can still be manipulated, which means you can clear the weapon with the safety on. You can also chamber a round with the safety on.

We liked the polymer 9 and 40 so much, I now have a steel frame 45 and a Witness Elite 9mm. My wife also got a compact poly 9 that she now purse carries.

a great emegency water supply...

shopping

$20 at Dicks Sporting Goods.

I have not used the LifeStraw, but I have a Sawyer Mini and I think it is a better buy. Way more versatile for about the same price and size. I think the filter is better too. I also have an MSR sweetwater, and I wish I had gotten the sawyer first. The ability to attach to any standard soda or water bottle, drink from a puddle with the straw, or use the bag to squeeze water into a clean container or your pot for cooking is awesome. Super small and filters up to 100,000 gallons. My only regret is not buying the 2 pack so I would have one for the car and one in my camping bag.

What ammo have you put through them?

I had no end of trouble with both the magpul and the ETS when using tul/wolf/random steel cased stuff in practice and matches. In both the nose of a round would bind up again the front of the mags and they would stop feeding. It wasn't always the top round that would bind, sometimes one further down would and when you dropped the mag a bunch of loose rounds would fly everywhere.

The answer from both companies was "use different ammo" but since all that ammo works fine in the factory mags (~7k rounds through the same set of mags), I was just happy to stick with factory. Never know which 9mm you'll find, can't have picky mags in an otherwise unpicky pistol.

Never shot any steel cased ammo. Thanks for the heads up. It would have never crossed my mind to try any.

Nato (US Surplus) +P+
Federal cheapy 115gr. ball
Federal HST 124gr. +P
Gold Dolt 124gr. +P

The above have all ran flawlessly for me. The only one I have ran any quantity of is the Nato +P+ stuff, and then not in the quantity that you have. Only 1500 rounds or so, and maybe 600 rounds of the Federal. But, no problems whatsoever.

I don't own any steel cased ammo. Maybe I can find some at work today and go home and play with it.

What is your average rate of failure? If I take home 100 rounds of the steel cased and try it all in one mag, do you think I'll get to see it fail? Or do I need a larger number to find out?

I was rotating the magpul and ETS mags in with my factory stuff at matches, and was getting failures quickly (in 1-2 mags per match). So I would think 100 through a mag would prove/disprove it for a mag easily. I can't remember if I was using wolf, tula or brown bear but any would have been 115gr FMJ, or the 124gr Novosibirsk LVE. Once the failures popped up I put all the mags into the safe and relegated them to dryfire practice with snapcaps.

My magpuls were very new, I had some of the first ones shipped prior to the recall. Didn't try them after they sent me new mag bodies for the magpul to try... maybe that cleared it up but again the early failures with the most common ammo I shoot turned me off on them instantly.

NATO 9mm has a pressure rating that is somewhere between regular and +P.

Now that, my friend, is a statement that has been debated for 15 years on the internet. I have yet to see a definitive answer. So I guess it depends on who you believe,(assuming that you are working from 9mm Luger+P 38,500psi (SAAMI spec.).

Regardless, feel free to substitute 9mm Nato in the above posts.

My Ranger is short on easily accessible hidey holes, so no truck gun, but if I am in the truck, there's gun in it.
This is why you make an easily accessible hidey hole...

A K9 might find it by GSR and powder smell, but joe blow average cop will NEVER find it unless they tear the whole truck apart...

I Saving a few pennies a round isn't worth the hassle having to load them in the mags to me.

So far I've saved ~$375 using steel vs. cheap brass in my main pistol. If prices stay the way they are, I'll have paid for the gun by next year. That's worth it to me.

Now if I got off my lazy butt and started loading again...

Debated, yes. How they actually test from the factory is anyone's guess. I will bet that very little of the factory ammo is loaded right to the max specification.

CIP spec for 9mm - 34084 psi.
SAAMI spec for 9mm - 35001 psi.
NATO spec for 9mm - 36500 psi.
SAAMI spec for 9mm +P - 38500 psi.
