Deer...head shots?

I have taken plenty of head shots in the past. But I had confidence in the gun and myself. I tired to stick to calm deer, had a steady rest and kept to a reasonable distance.

The thing to do as mentioned earlier, is pick out the old horse head bitch of a doe that is looking around first then go down the line. If you run a suppressor, they wont acknowledge the shot most of the time besides look up. If a head shot isn't an option, I try to pin the front shoulders together, either way I shouldn't have to track far.

All comes down to ethics. If you're confident and good enough with a cold bore shot to be right where it needs to be there is no issue. I regular head shoot when hunting at distances of 100 or less. Saves meat.

Nothing survives a shot to the central nervous system.

Actually as a testament to the miracles of the human body and modern medicine, people routinely survive GSWs to the head.

So I guess if you do land a head shot on a deer don’t rush it to a trauma center.

A deer without a lower jaw is going to die a horrible death. Stick with the neck, if you must. Or make a bigger hole.

Where I hunt, the longest line of sight is 130yrds on one of the cut lanes. I’ve only hunted with my AR using a 60gr Hornady interlock SP for almost 10 yrs. and have only taken neck shots. Had one big buck take a hell of a leap but crumbled into a pile when it landed 15 ft away. Otherwise all DRT. As stated above, can you ethically connect that shot in those conditions. I average about 3-4 a season now that I’m older and don’t really get so excited I lose sight of the fundamentals. I’m a meat hunter first , not a trophy hunter. I’ll always say that when I started with a 30-30 aiming for the traditional kill zone, I had many deer run off. Never too far yardage wise but when you can’t see more than a few yards off the lane, it can get aggravating. Don’t get me started on the few I took with a bow. The highest high when I connect, the lowest low when it takes hours to find it.

If you dial in a rife for a 30-35 yard shot and you can hit 3" circle 10 out of 10 times, go for it. I don't have time or skill to do that.

Bow or crossbow would be a no from me- to easy for them to jump the string

Honestly going back through the thread, I think I’d leave the rifles in the safe and use the crossbow. You said there’s only 2.2acres and there’s a buffer, but you also said the neighbors hunt and that means you don’t know where they’ll be.
