A 62 year old Morganton deer hunter shot a duck hunter who was returning to his truck after a hunt. The 25 year old victim was air lifted for critical care. No charges have been filed as they are waiting to see the results of the victim. After a few months ago a father shooting his son in the mouth doing recon on thieves, I think I will stay the hell out of Burke County for awhile.

This is serious incident but please tell me if you have ever seen a deer walk on his hind legs.

Hope not to offend too many, but I think you said it all with "Burke County" Sure there are some normal folks there, but I have hunted and fished in the area before and the "white trash" I ran in down by the rivers has Rockingham County beat by a mile! Friend of mine manages the Table Rock Fish Hatchery, so I hear stories of the locals pretty regular.

I just don't get it. If your 11b, in some MOUT situation in the armpit of the world..... then sometimes you don't have 100% visual confirmation of the target your sending rounds towards.... But if your sitting in a tree/blind, I just don't understand how you can in good faith take an "ethical" shot unless you've observed the target long enough to verify it is a damn deer and that you get the shot your looking for (within reason in field conditions).

Half the fun for me is just watching them. Now that the freezer is full, I'm only going hunting on the off chance a true shooter buck walks out, otherwise I'm I watch and learn mode.

Do they think Deliverance is a documentary?

How many denote a full freezer?

I have three freezers.
Was wondering what he thought a full one was.

I’m shy about 6 deer.

And haven’t seen a deer the entire gun season.

Yes, I have. During the bad drought several years ago the deer would drink out of the bird bath in our back yard. Then they would stand and walk a few feet to the birdfeeders and start guzzling there. I also saw them stand and knock down fruit out of our persimmon trees in the driveway. However, I have never seen a deer that wore camo or looked like a duck hunter. Back when I used to duck hunt I ALWAYS wore a blaze orange vest going to and from the duck blind.

I don't have a freezer as big as you guys. We've got the Fridge/Freezer and a stand up freezer. Picked up the 4th of the season on from the processer Saturday and it took some loadmaster techniques to get it all in and still had issues with the door popping open. While I'd like to get more, I feel like I've taken my fair share off the land. Its not the best land/not a huge population. Its been getting better of the past few years but also haven't shot any big bucks (only management opportunities) and no big does. According to conventional QDMA wisdom, 2 1/2 year does are the most reproductive and best equipped to ran a fawn successfully. This has limited my haul as it were.

Maybe the shooter in the original post has experienced the same and decided to switch to duck hunters?

There's far too many "hunters" out there that shoot at sounds and movement. I've known several who did. Some of them have no concept of gun safety or the 4 rules.

Anybody know what they taste like?

Chicken, everything taste like chicken to ignorant people. Another example of neglect, plain and simple neglect. Let the law suits fly!!! That's about the only thing I see that could put the brakes on this "if it moves or makes a sound, CHOOT IT LeRoy!!! Until people are held accountable for their actions it will continue....

I was actually in the Northern Neck of Va. one time and had been invited on a deer drive. Standing around shooting the bull and a guy actually said he had taken a "sound" shot the day before. I did not understand and asked another guy what he meant. Immediately uninvited myself from the drive. Never a big fan of drives anyway.

It is possible that this was not target misidentification, and one of these situations:
  1. Animal was skylined or positioned so that the projectile overpenetrated or missed and continued onto whatever was beyond.
  2. Fast moving animal, like a bird or running deer, and shooter was following him with his gun, and fired without considering #1 above (Dick Cheney).
Regardless, the shooter should be held fully accountable for his actions. We have the 8-foot elevation rule in Wake County because thirty years ago, a hunting bullet from an unknown source struck the hand of a woman in her yard, and she became an anti-gun zealot who then ran and won a seat on the Wake County Board of Commissioners.

Drives can be productive in the late season when nothing is moving. But you better know and trust the ones on the guns.

You can make all the excuses you want, this was not this but it looked like that....... It comes down to target identification and that's where things fall to hell, PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY!!!! I guess it's a thing of the past with new hunters, or careless older hunters, whatever..... Screw up, pay the piper.....

I'm with BB, this was no accident. Pure negligence. I never was a deer hunter. My dad brought me up on quail and doves. If I even swung close to a person or took a shot with a farm building, machinery, or house in the background I would have been in big trouble. And don't even ask what would happen if I shot at a low bird near the dogs!
Bottom line is, you don't take a shot at anything that you can't positively identity and know what's behind it. If you do and hurt someone, total responsibility is yours.

I think we should genetically engineer deer so they are electric blue, that would solve the problem.

"I think I will stay the hell out of Burke County for awhile."

We have a customer at work who is also in the bail bond business. He works in the Burke County area. He says there is a serous meth problem there.

A few weeks ago he was in and got to telling stories about having to chase down clients who didn't hold up their end of the bail bond deal. Some funny stories, some pretty sad. Like the female he caught up with at a cheap motel. As she was gathering up her belongings he noticed a syringe with very a short needle. The girl told him they get that way after repeated sharping with an emery board.

Wow. I've seen 2 this year and both were shot and now deceased.

I have seen ALOT in your area the last 3 weeks. If I hit another in your neck of the woods. Would you like me to call you?????

In the last 30 years of venison only consumption, I have never had to ask for help. This would be sad.

That is sad about Burke Co. Beautiful area.

Damn. I had my eye on a nice parcel of land in Burke Co. Better look elsewhere.

I wouldn't worry much about moving to Burke County.
Even though it's obviously not the utopia that Remshooter lives in, there are a lot of good folks here.
If you're not interested in that parcel of land, pm me a location, I might want to look at it.

Ouch!

Wonder if he was wearing orange? I tend to recommend some orange to anyone off trail, including fly fishing buddies, once gun season gets here. Not because they have too. But because of the idiots out there.

And folks need to understand, orange is not the be all end all to be seen. I've personally set up for a shot coming out of a rhodo thicket when I was younger. Next thing I know a guy steps out with a solid orange jacket one. Couldn't see the orange until he got in the light. It was useless in the shadows. Gotta ID it before you pull the trigger.

Saw some people at a construction site with these on the other night.

I found this picture and thought of the religious implications.

I'm telling 'ya, I saw Jesus walking out if the woods!

From here Burke Co. is considered civilisation.
When I read the title my first thought was "was Bugs Bunny in any way involved?"

This had nothing to do with not wearing orange, someone lost their temper and did something they can never take back there was supposed to be three duck hunters there that day,but my friends son had to work, not wanting to take a chance on entangling myself in this case in any way this is all I care to type,

In all honesty, they were on your side of Burke so we can split the difference. Somewhere off 64 I think. Maybe the shooter was from Rufton.

Hey, why you picking on Rufton? We almost bought some land up that way and made some decent friends. ;)

Sounds like there is more to this story. It would not surprise me a bit if what you might be implying is he was shot on purpose. I have witnessed some scary western North Carolina deer territorial disputes. There are people that stupid. How many times have you heard- “that SOB shot MY deer I been scoutin all year.”

I once worked with a guy who never did much scouting. He would go to a large land track and find where people were feeding deer then find the trail leading to the corn or apple piles. He hunted about four days a year and bagged a couple every year. His theory was they only ate during night so he busted them on their way home from the fast food pile.

Hunters with high powered rifles scare me. When I was really into quail hunting, I did most of my hunting after the first of the year.

Thought had gone through my mind, but did not have enough info. Sound like you might. If you notice a large percentage of "hunting accidents" seem to be suspicious. Like when the guy shoots his brother in law etc. "last time that SOB will hit my sister"! Actually had a game warden in VA tell me that story, but it still went in the books as a hunting accident, since they could not prove differently.
