Question. How much does it normally cost to have a deer processed?

The closet one to me is Nickels. Their site says $25 for gut and skin, $10 for organ disposal, and has basically cuts listed at $40. Does the basic cuts mean that's what is included for $40? I will call them tomorrow but I'm just thinking....

And no I won't be processing my deer ( if I get one) this year as it's my first. Thanks

That does not sound too bad. Even for all of it. IIRC I paid around $50-60 way back when I used to pay for it. So if you field dress it and skin it you get it for $40. Not bad at all. Plus you get to keep the heart and liver if you want. lol

CBC6D89C-198D-427A-B58A-2C670ABC2F00.jpeg I take mine to 301 in effingham. Top notch operation IMHO. I drive an hr one way to get there and pass one that I know of on the way.

I like them a lot. Open from I think 8-10 Mon - Sat. 4-10 Sunday. If your running late and call, they will wait on you. Last time I touch the Deer is when I put it on the truck. They typically take it off and rinse the bed out. Next time I see it it’s individually vacuum sealed and labeled. Full service taxidermy. I even pic up my corn from there, cobbed @ 7$ per bag which they load.

Man, for your first kill you really should consider doing it yourself and experiencing the whole process from the hunt to the plate. It’s super easy to process a deer and there’s really no wrong way to do it minus getting the guts out quick to preserve the best flavor.

Agree with this. You need to know how to deal with it if you can’t get it to a Processer. once you’ve done it a few times there’s nothing to it. If you can dress out a chicken, you can do a deer.
That being said, it takes a substantial investment to have all the tools to correctly do it as well as the time (opportunity cost) involved. Cooler to hang it in, Grinding, seasoning, stuffing, vacuum sealing, etc. hence my crush on this particular line of business. 2 hrs and $100 bucks are my investment after the shot.

I gut and debone (except the shoulders) my deer myself. The shoulders are baked whole in the oven and turned into hash, the backstraps are removed and made ready for the grill. I take the deboned ham and neck roasts to the processor for burger and sausage. Doing it this way I end up with roughly $1 a pound for burger and about $1.50 a pound for link sausage.

and....don’t soak anything. Age it if you can, freeze/can/cook if you can’t. Soaking it ruins the flavor.

Geez... That's why I don't hunt anymore... Costs too much. I can buy pork and beef at the store for that. Doesn't require I pay someone $1000 to hunt their land fora season either...

Process it yourself, and make friends with landowners and it wont cost you that much. Besides beef and pork are nasty animals

Nasty maybe, but tasty!

I have always done my own processing. Think I can remember how. I still have my grinder and sausage caser too. Hard to make friends with landowners these days. I don't live in the country currently and folks keep to themselves. Many are too scared of lawsuits to let people use their land even if they are ok with it too.

NC has plenty of public hunts, both draw and non-draw types. I apply for national wildlife hunts at various places in the south, and these usually turn out to be some of the best ones all season.

I reconnected with an old friend that used to be in a band with me, set him up hunting his wife's families land (he didn't hunt prior to this so I mentored him), set up a nice feeder for him, and gave him some deer meat. He is now excited as heck for tomorrow's gun opener in 30 deg temps! It's basically exactly like teaching someone to shoot except it requires a bit more prep and forethought.

I have always done my own processing, I learned how to field dress the deer from my brother on a hunt years ago, once you learn how it's easy, the only thing to worry about is not cutting into the stomach or intestines, you don't want any of that getting on the meat. I always dress the deer where it falls, no need to worry about leaving the guts there, small animals need to eat too. Processing your own is not all that hard it just a time consuming job, there are plenty of youtube video's out there to show you how.

I always heard public land was a good place to get shot...

I guess you could get shot anytime you are out in the woods, but I havent been shot yet. Its a good place to meet a game warden or federal wildlife officer though. The density at pee dee is about 100 hunters per 3000 acres on a bad day, but most are in elevated tree stands with orange vests and hats (mines reflective) so unless theyre point shooting orange squirrels in the dark, its at least as safe as the average movie theatre in Charlotte....

Been shot at on public land. Lot more Yahoo's closer to raleigh.

Anyone know a decent place in fuquay area for processing. I can do it myself but lack time to do it well and most deliciously.
