So I'm about 95% sure that I'm gonna get into hunting deer next season with my BIL. He mainly does bow, but i'm going to give him a black powder rifle this Christmas (long story, but he has a felony) so I'd have a hunting buddy. He has a friend with some prime family owned land, and my aunt& uncle have some land around State Road that we can hunt (which we will scout and possibly bait).

So, when I was a youngin' it was always lever action 30-30 or 30-06. I want a lever gun, period. I was also thinking .270 or .308, but not sure if I really need a "bean field" gun. Here in the foothills it seems 100-ish yards will suffice, unlike a lot of you folks in the eastern part of the state.

What do you fine folk have for reccomendations? I'm thinking $400-ish budget, which may not get me the lever gun I want, but that can come later. I guess I also need to budget for a budget scope dand some rings. What y'all got?

You should be able to find a serviceable 30-30 or 35 Rem lever in that range. Check the local shops and pawn stores. We have them show up on the classifieds here from time to time also. Be patient and you'll find a good one.

Whatever you choose, give it about two weeks or so before you buy. In the first week or two of January, the pawn shops will be flooded with hunting rifles due to the season ending. People will be selling them off to help pay for holiday expenses.

I like the way you think!

Only two lever actions I can think of in .30-06 or .270 Win are the Winchester/Browning 1895 or Brownings BLR long action. Going to cost at least double your budget. Savage has their AXIS II, Remington the 783 and Ruger the American budget rifles. These are bolt action rifles however.

And bolt guns are perfectly fine. I've never seen a 270 in a lever gun before. The lever guns are really nostalgic for me, wlaking through the woods with my grandfather, he always had his.
