Defensive Shooting in Las Vegas

I wonder what Tori was doing while all of the shooting was taking place. As I recall she is a multiple national ladies champion and should have been able to put the dirt bag down pretty quick on her own.
Maybe she was doing what normal people would do, trying to unass the x zone.:D

...it was after the shooting...she wasn’t even there during it.

Duh. She touched the gun didn’t she? After killing her friend I’m not letting her grab the gun he got shot with while I’m still present.

Baldwin can go anywhere he wants at 1:30am and mind his own business and expect nobody tries to come up on him as a threat. Includes being white in the projects if he wants. Just like jogging in a white neighborhood.

People are built different when it comes to emotions. Some would weep after a shooting, some would not show emotion. There are evil people who rejoice in murdering. You will not last long in a UFC ring if making someone bloody disturbs you. Do those guys celebrate a win resulting in a bloodbath? Of course.

I’ll copy and paste this to help you:

“Baldwin, who has a concealed weapon permit, then took off with the woman. The woman, while crying, attempted to call 911 and said “we were just in a” and hung up, police said. The pair then drove to the house of Baldwin’s father, Bobby Baldwin, chairman and CEO of Drew Las Vegas, a Strip resort set to open in 2022.
There they contacted an attorney, who called 911.

Police said Joseph Smith’s girlfriend showed up at the scene and found her boyfriend dead. The woman reportedly placed his firearm in her vehicle but later pointed police to it. There was no indication in the police report that she was arrested or charged.”

The girlfriend of the shot guy showed up AFTER it was over and AFTER Baldwin and Tori had left the scene. >They were not present<

Gotcha. I got a different perspective from two other articles which condensed it to she showed up and took the gun. Never heard of the guy so I was researching him and the hot girlfriend.

Tori is definitely pretty attractive

It is a good idea to have a word or two, even a phrase that you can use to communicate danger to your significant other.
When I worked in branch banking we would say 'Aunt Mabel' if one of us was being held up. When my family is out and about,
'Please don't hurt my family' that was the code for them to hit the deck if I had to use my firearm.

I’ve been a BJ Baldwin motorsports fan for a while and knew he was a gun guy after seeing him do a SilencerCo video a few years ago, but had no idea he carried and was actually a great shooter. Good for him!

That said, the story seems highly dramatized. Really takes away from the cool factor here and makes him sound like a tool.

So, about the girlfriend Tori. Her she is demonstrating a draw from concealment. About this time, I'm like, I give up.

I don’t understand the jump(s) to confusions about the guy and the whole incident just based on his attitude. We all walk around here preaching “you’re only as good as your practice” or some such flavor. It sounds like he hangs out with Taran who probably requires you greet each other by writing “HELLO” with bullets in an IPSC target upon arrival. Point being, he apparently puts more lead down range than most of us here combined. When the switch had to flick, his went straight to “party time” and he likely visualized a stage on the range.

Being in a parking lot, there’s a high probability of there being cameras or at least other witnesses. Add to that, the dead guy’s brother saying “he got what he asked for.”

Case closed in my book.

I know it doesn't fit with normal american sensibilities, but 2am snacks in the parking lot of in-n-out is pretty normal out that way. Wife grew up in california and she has taken me out there a couple times. that's just what people do there, and since vegas is full of people coming from CA to spend money... it makes sense.

still, 10 good shots on the guy before he fell... dang. drugs? adrenaline?

If I had to guess, I think the reason his attitude gets many of our attention is that we are told/trained to say as little about the event as possible until we have met with an attorney and all of the liabilities are set aside. Grandstanding, bragging, or even just plain talking too much is fodder for attorneys to use during criminal/civil proceedings. The old maxim "I was in fear of my life so I fired. I would like to speak to my attorney please." is normally what we should limit ourselves to when/if a shooting takes place.

Because things are much different when youre shooting at steel in a controlled environment vs getting shot at/in an actual confrontation lol
But you know that, we all should know that

Again, I think he catches some crap because of the story. I dont care that he brags (though, lets be real, 3.8 seconds...was his girl running the stopwatch or what?), the story just doesnt make sense.
Like I said upstream, he noticed them 240' away and determined they were wanting to harm him and his girl...but they (bad guys) got to the trunk of his car?

I dont care who he hangs with, how hot the girls are, none of that means crap me. Im not impressed, Im not going to be a hater because of it either.
Im looking at his story

I think he has embellished the story for fame some. 3.8 seconds was probably a range shoot for that many shots in which he has timed. The 80 yards was most likely where he spotted them coming toward him and her, not as a threat per say but as where they were aware of human movement. Next statement may endorse the gun, ammo, and conceal holster he used. The bad guy talked about hurting somebody to others but he was a poor gambler. Hope he didn’t waste money that day on lotto tickets but hey he couldn’t spend it in a pine box.

I'm guessing he is turning this into an ad for his coaching. I imagine folks are coming out of the woodwork to train with the "master".

Fox changed their story (link in OP)
But in the original, which I quoted, he said that at 80 yards he knew they (bad guys) wanted to kill them (he and his girl). Again, to me, just smells of a BS story after the fact
I think youre right in the last bit about endorsements, you and @J R Green , that he'll look at turning this into commercial gain.

Not sure which InO location they were at, google shows they close at 1AM, he says the lights went off but he could see their hoodies up, perhaps Tori did get a good look at them before the lights turned off to notice he had a handgun.

The aggressor evidently was still shooting while he was being hit in the chest multiple times with a 9mm at fairly close range. I wonder if the defender will reexamine the chambering he carries for self defence.

Yeah, because if he had been using a .45 he would have obliterated him with one shot.

His soul would have been sucked out and obliterated as soon as the first slug left the barrel and a choir of angels would descend singing and carrying a visage of John Moses.

The handgun he used was a Glock 19 “Combat Master” from Taran Tactical Innovations. According to BJ, “it is a modified version of the Combat Master. I change a few things to my liking to better suit my defensive needs. My Combat Master isn’t as nice to shoot as Taran’s base model, but for what it lacks in performance it makes up for in reliability and consistency. If you order one and you want the same one I use – ask for Spec B.”

It was loaded with Speer Gold Dot ammo and had a Holosun reflex sight with a green reticle.

lol dude called it, endorsing the gun

With the passage of time does anybody know a figure for yardage for this feat? We are bustin to try it here!
From the TFB article:

The distance between the attackers and BJ was very significant, which was even noted in a police report. According to BJ himself, who kindly answered my questions when I was working on the article: “Fight started at 14 yards, ended at 23.” Despite the relatively long distance to the attackers, low light conditions, and the fact that the threat was moving and shooting back, BJ “saw the sights at all times” and did not miss a single shot.

Thanks Amp...so the head shot was surely the last shot so it was at 23 yards. This will be a tuff one in 3.8. I'll use 3 targets..one at 23 for the head shot and one at 19 yards for 5 shots and one at 14 for 5 shots. If the targets are side by side, shoulder to shoulder at 14,19 and 23 yards going away it should be fairly representative.
I'll leave it to you Amp...how shall we start...seated, standing, firearm concealed? Any suggestions?

I didn’t read it except the quotes in the thread here. Seems like he rubs some people the wrong way. Oh well. He did go to a lawyer first you notice, before he even called the police. If the defensive shoot was called good by the cops, he can brag all he wants after that. And like it or not, he has something to brag about.

But yes, it sounds like they should have gotten in the car and left when the spidey sense started tingling.

Given the warning he had, I would say draw from concealment, but with hand already on weapon and strong side away from target.

I would bet the head shot was last and occurred as the dead guys head dropped into the x zone as he was sinking down.

I think you’re gonna have to start with a greasy burger and large order of fries...and do it again without napkins if you need a tie-breaker.

Ah, that would be a good stage, The Greasy Burger stage. Maybe a little mayo and ketchup too. :D

Remember, he was running a RDS too.

Shoulda, coulda, woulda... Tough call without being there. Might have been more tactical to gear up for the fight vs. risking being shot running. Might have taken too long to get rolling. Personally, I know I would have been treat focused and not risked losing sight of the threat.

From what I've read it sounds like he was outside of his vehicle standing when the fight started. I would start standing, facing the targets, gun in holster and concealed.

Take away regarding all this criticism for self-promoting: do like J. Noble says, an' shut up. Even if you are in the pistol proficiency trainin' bidness, it always makes you look better when you are the quiet one, and others are talkin' up what you did.

Why was it ok for him to leave the scene?

I still am not clear on why he was targeted and attacked.
Random chance?

From a police report, we know how the story looked from the other side, quote:

Baldwin and his girlfriend Tori Nonaka were sitting in their vehicle in the parking lot of a restaurant at around 2:00am on April 22 when two men approached them. An altercation broke out, and 18 rounds of gunfire were exchanged. Josef Smith, 43, was killed, and Smith’s brother Kevin, aged 40, ran from the scene and was later arrested. Neither Baldwin, who is trained in firearm protection and had a concealed weapon permit nor Nonaka were injured.

(…) the elder of the Smith brothers had become agitated after an unsuccessful attempt to purchase a gun from a store in the complex earlier in the day. The brothers noticed Baldwin and Nonaka in their vehicle when they returned to the area later. Kevin Smith later told police that his brother had instigated the shootout and that Baldwin had acted in self-defense and should not be charged.

Going to have to start seated. The police report says they were in their vehicle.
