Defensive Shooting in Las Vegas

Yeah I saw that and it doesn't make sense.

A guy is agitated that he can't purchase a gun from a store so he decides to randomly attack two people in a fast food parking later in the day?

This makes zero sense.

Kevin Smith later told police that his brother had instigated the shootout and that Baldwin had acted in self-defense and should not be charged.
That may have been posted before, but I haven’t read many of the articles.

That’s a rather refreshing bit of info. Too bad it doesn’t happen more often. Usually it’s just the opposite, and from people not even there.

Is it supposed to make sense??? Are you suggesting people always act logically and rationally??

Another report...

B.J. Baldwin is a defensive pistol practitioner and champion off-road racer. As he tells the story, which occurred on April 22, he and his girlfriend had just grabbed a late-night dinner at In-N-Out Burger and were in the parking lot catching up on emails and social media. Suddenly, they were encountering an armed gunman around 1:46 a.m.

He said his girlfriend noticed two hooded men charging her with weapon drawn from across the parking lot. Once she was able to alert him, the men were 15 yards away with the gun pointed at her and smiling, he said. He believed they appeared intent on doing harm.

A Las Vegas police report indicates Smith was accompanied by his brother, Kevin Smith, 40. Kevin Smith told police his brother was upset that morning because of a failed attempt to buy firearms from a gun store in the complex.

Prior to the shooting, Kevin Smith said, his brother threw rocks at the gun store’s front window. The siblings left the shopping complex on Tropicana, then later returned on foot, police wrote in the report.

“Kevin had a feeling Joseph was going to do something stupid, but denied knowing what,” the report said.

Kevin Smith said the siblings saw Baldwin and his acquaintance in the parking lot upon their return.

“(Kevin) Smith said Joseph walked up to them, pulled his gun out, pointed it at the female and smiled as he began shooting at the male,” the report said. “Kevin stated Joseph was the first to fire his weapon.”

Kevin Smith told police they did not know the couple, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Going to have to start seated. The police report says they were in their vehicle.

Maybe even seated, seat belted in, and one hand holding a drink, the other hand in a Burger King-type paper bag!

It appears the SHOOTING engagement was reported as 3.8 sec. I wonder how long did the ENTIRE engagement last from first threat? It says they were seated in a vehicle so apparently the shooting portion of the engagement was from a seated position

Because things are much different when youre shooting at steel in a controlled environment vs getting shot at/in an actual confrontation lol
But you know that, we all should know that

But if she did not react as fast because she's a multi champion competition shooter, and is only used to shooting paper/steel in a closed environment..... then why did the guy react fast? He does the same exact style shooting and training, no? Only probably a lot less than she has.

Unless he's training by shooting people and getting shot at, which wouldn't be prudent. Her credentials on shooting look a lot better than his. I don't think that is it.

Pretty sure one of the articles says they were in a hurry to get to in and out and she left her carry piece at home, so it was probably quicker for him to engage vs her taking his gun and engaging the same person.

Again, the stories just arent adding up

So in the first report the BG were 80 yards out when they knew they meant harm, now they were 15 yards before she could alert him?
And then theyre at the back of the car in another story.
So did she she see them smiling in her side mirror?

@NKD everyone reacts differently. That's if the 'was in a hurry and didnt get my piece' story is factual

Yes, everyone reacts differently.
Just wondered why you brought up her training/shooting, as if that were a factor.

Because someone ELSE brought it up - go back and look. Someone said something like, "she's a world class shooter, why didnt she shoot back" or something to that effect. Look back in the thread, see who I quoted and then maybe you wont be questioning why I brought it up

I read the whole thread. Yes he said that. You answered him by saying:
"Because things are much different when you're shooting at steel in a controlled environment vs getting shot at/in an actual confrontation lol
But you know that, we all should know that".

But its the same thing he or anybody else does. Shoot at targets on a range. Nobody uses real people.

Can you not see my point? It seems super obvious.

Oh, it does. But it's also very easy to understand that everyone is different. And just cause this girl is quick and accurate when the buzzer goes off doesnt meant she's going to be some crack shot when the bad guys are 240' away and closing in with guns.

I am by no means a tactical gunfighter special agent cool trained guy, but I have done enough training and competing to know that while some skills overlap, they arent the same thing.

Reminds me of something kinda funny. Years ago, my oldest brother and I got really heavily involved in Tae Kwon Do. We trained a few times a week pretty heavily. We also trained some in Aikido. So, there was this brief window in my past where I felt relatively confident in my "fighting skills". At the same time, my brother was also into dog rescue, and was friends with a guy in Georgia that raised some pretty exotic african Greyhounds called azawakhs. Turns out, this guy used to be a pretty well known ballet dancer and toured with the likes of Baryshnikov. So one day, my brother is down in Georgia and talking to this feller about our training and he asks my brother to show him some. Well, turns out, a BUNCH of the same kicks, punches, blocks and so forth are also shared with ballet. This guy could perfectly mimic almost everything my brother did...and from what Im told, even better.

I say all that to say this, many of the moves were the same, but the mindset behind the two are completely different. Both "arts" include grace, strength, and discipline, but only one concentrated on a defensive combative mindset. So while Tori may be an absolute queen on the competition circuit, the defensive mindset doesn't necessarily bleed over.

I figured it was pretty simple. They were out for fun in Las Vegas and she wasn’t wearing clothing conducive to concealing a gun. His size and clothing I’m sure were much better for carrying and evidently quite sufficient.

Although it would have been super double instanter karma if they had both dumped a mag into him before he hit the ground.

And the resulting debate... My rounds hit him first! Did not!
