Did You Go Shooting Today

I go next. As background, I've never shot in a competition of any kind. I've never shot when drawing from a holster, whether concealed or not. And I've never shot using a timer. I spend most of my range time just shooting junk, instead of practicing any useful skills. So...to say I was a bit intimated by the thought of trying this drill, with spectators (including my son), is quite the understatement. But no way I could take a pass on it.
THIS is what I am most proud of at The Battery Oaks. Nobody comes to us and leaves intimidated by any instruction or shooting that they do. Big had not done any of the things he listed above and now he has. That's what we want here. For you to be able to do things you simply can't do elsewhere.
I told Big that the things we do here are things you do every day if your life. Driving a car..going to an ATM...going to your car in a parking lot. My hope is that IF anything bad happens doing everyday things you will say to yourself....I knew this could happen...and I know what to do.
Our hero Jeff Cooper said....Panic is a normal reaction to a problem with no forthought solution.
See you all in October...I am sure we will have a grand time!!! Even you Jep!!!!

Awesome and helpful experience you offer and people accept many times without knowing that within minutes after pulling away from the Battery Oaks that very training and decisive reaction could save their lives...……..or the lives of another innocent person who deserves to be protected.

Life is good and even better when the people in it step up on behalf of others. Thank you for being willing to do just that when the opportunity presents itself.

There are many "what ifs" in life. If some special problem is bothering you, or you have thought about...I wonder what I would do IF? Come here and we will make the "IF" happen. You can be prepared for the "IFs". We can't imagine them for you or cover every one as they happen, BUT if you can conjure it up AND it is practical to life, we will help you figure out how to handle it.
Tonight as you are typing, how far away from your personal protection are you?Right NOW? How far is it to your closest outside door? How far from your TV chair to the outside door? If you come here we can set all these up and work out plans to help if things go bad . Lastly, Again, ALL IS FREE.

I made it up to Frontline today. Was a good bunch there, but not too crowded. I only shot at the 100 yard range, though I could hear people on the other ranges.

Two purposes for the trip today. First, I had replaced the flash hider on my 20" AR with a muzzle brake, and was worried that the difference in weight would change the POI or group size. Answer: Yes, and Yes. I had some loads worked up, slightly above and below my previous best load using 8208XBR and Hornady 75 bullets. The optimum charge appears to have increased slightly, but still less than 1" @ 100 yards. The POI moved a couple of inches as well. So, I have the scope re-zeroed now, and I will have to make some rounds with the new charge level so I can chrono them (left the chrono at home this time).

The interesting thing is that some of my other good loads using 55SP bullets and Varget have the POI 3" above the POI for the 75 bthp load. The group size was about 2" as well, so I think I need to rework this load.

The other purpose for the trip was to be able to bond with a new car. First new car we have bought in 14 years, it is a Hyundai Elantra. I got 45mpg round trip to the range. The old Pontiac Torrent that it is replacing, with 223k miles, has so many problems with it, and just started making a sound that I am pretty sure is a transmission bearing about to go. If anyone wants it, cheap, let me know.

Couple groups with the Marlin 1894S in .41 Mag. Lee TL411-255-RF cast right at 269 grs of wheelweights and pushing 1600 fps for 1535 fpe. I want to shoot a bear with this but don't think I'll be here this season again.

I'll bet that Marlin kicks pretty hard with those loads.

Its a thump but less then the .308 rifle.

I've got a Rossi 44mag carbine that only weighs 5 lbs, and it launches 240gn bullets at 1800fps. With the bare metal buttplate, it hurts! That is a little over 1700 ft/lbs ME.

"Big" a treat to meet you and "Lucas", ( what a nice young man). That was Charlie helping Lucas through the Wizard Drill, which I like so many have an intense dislike for, only because it humbles me every time. All and all a good time was had by all.

P.s If any of you are lucky enough to be a guest at Miss Ronnie - Sues table you are in for a Great treat. Good food prepared and served by a great lady.

Shot with the wife today. She hasn’t been in a while but shot her carry well (P938) and other 9s and my .40 truck gun. At one point, I was at the truck getting a mag ready and turned to see her shooting head shots on the silhouette with one of my other guns...she was 15 for 15 at 15 yards!!!

Anyway, I found 2 new favorites...P365 and my new QC10 9mm AR. Pic of the QC10 below. It was smooth, fairly quiet and well balanced! Nothing like quickly dumping 33 rounds of 9!

QC10 upper (side charging), QC10 lower (glock w LRBHO), QC10 15” hadguard (made by SLR), QC10 16” 9mm barrel, MVB stock w 9mm buffer setup, KE arms SLT-2 flat trigger, Arisaka vertical grip, PA Cyclops prism with ACSS etched reticle and VG6 9mm brake.

Well, I did not actually shoot anything, but I did stop by the Caswell County range just outside Yanceyville, on the way back from a family reunion in Virginia. I don't know how many times I have driven past the entrance, and never knew it was there. It is about an hour from where I live, so I may have to stop by there some time on one of my trips just so I can pop a few caps.

Went to RCWA Sunday at 12-3pm and had the rifle range almost to myself and a bud. Took the older Colt AR and nailed the 10x10 steel from 100 yds to 200yds. He sighted in his dad's 06 Remington.

Also tested the problem resolution the 870 Police had with cheap Winchester 12ga aluminum. I experienced very difficult extraction after 5 rounds (heat related). It was not the chamber but the rim seat. There were machining burrs that the rim would get stuck on when it expanded. A little smoothing to remove the burrs and everything extracted when warm to hot. Put 20 rounds down range to test out, happy, happy! Now if I can figure out a 'good' mod for the small 2" shells...

I did. And it started out miserable. Pouring rain between the house and the range...but not a single drop while at the range (and it doesn't look like it had rained here at all).

Then I started shooting and it got worse. For the life of me I can't get this CZ455 to shoot right. Did much better with the RAR and a 2-7X than my CZ with a 6-18X. Granted...it could be because I'm dead set on making it work with CCI SV. But maybe it's just not going to. I really want somebody else to come with me and shoot it one time so I can rule myself out of the equation.

And although this is technically the handgun forum, since these can both be (and usually are) handgun calibers, I'm gonna ask this question:

Which SBR setup should I (or would you) expect tighter groups from:

1. 7" 9mm, Octane 45, 147gr Georgia Arms, SPARC red dot
2. 4.5" 15-22, Spectre II, Federal Automatch, SPARC red dot

Sighted these both in at a new distance today: 100'

Went to the FOP range and shot 249 thru the Springfield rail gun today.

Total now is 683 rounds no failures. Gotta catch it up to my other ones.

OK. Today I went out on the porch and my wife's newly acquired horse troughs [2] were full to the top with Florence water. They are 6+ feet long, 1 foot deep and 18 inches wide. I decided to see what it would take to reliable punch a hole through them.[She said she wanted drain holes in them, soooo]
.22 LR from 16in brl..CCI Minimag solids....No holes... recovered...smashed flat on one side..
.45 100 grain copper HP at 1,300+ FPS out of a G21.....Barely a dent..complete bullet recovered...Base and 4 perfect petals
.45 230 Ball....clean through and went to China
9mm 115 Ball...G43.....Went through and recovered about 2 inches in the ground
What I learned..If Southern Living Magazine doesn't quit coming here with these planter ideas Imma be broke....

Went to the PHA Open House today
I shot a hundred(ish) rounds through my Take Down 10/22

Then I shot 3 rounds through...well, I dont know for sure.
I think it was a Jocelyn or Jolene or something. Mid 1800s, shot a 50-60 cartridge, if I remember correctly.
Big sucker
No kick, but was heavy as a car

Two guys had LOTS of rifles that were 1945 and older (oldest was mid 1800s), and was telling folks about them, letting them shoot them etc
That's something I like about most gun folks - just super nice and want to share the joy with others

Yes and no. I didn't shoot today, but my son and two grandsons came to shoot. What a joy to see them learning. One 14yrs old the second one 11 yrs old.

When we first started two years ago I instructed them in all the safety rules and procedures, range rules etc. Loading, unloading, jam ID and clearing malfunctions. All the boring stuff. Then I did not let them fire a single shot. I had printed out the rules and procedures and told them when they came back and could recite and perform them they could shoot.

Now, before each session we go over it all again and they are ready and perform beyond their age. Their instruction retention is impressive and they are becoming really good shooters.

Then after the shooting, they ran through all the gas on hand in the 4 wheeler, the go cart, and my truck (for the oldest in the pasture) and caught a mess of bream and bass in the pond.

Good day and Paw Paw is tired.

How bad was it?...... Ive had nothing but good luck with the CZ's

I had all but decided last night that I wasn’t going to the range today. But I woke up early and decided what the heck. I grabbed my x39 AR and several different types of steel and brass ammo for it. I also grabbed my 10mm Witness so I could empty some more factory ammo for the brass.

I was having a little trouble with the zero on my red-dot before I realized the mounting screws were loose. Once I had that tight, then I was able to get some half decent groups with it. I really need a scope on it before I try to determine the accuracy of the different ammo (and before I try reloading for it). My best group was the last one I shot, which was 4 shots inside a 2” circle, with cheapest ammo I had - Golden Tiger.

I finished up on the pistol range with the 10mm Witness. I was shooting factory PPU ammo which is loaded about 200fps slower than full pressure 10mm. I wanted to use it up and save the brass. This is the first time I have shot 10mm and picked up more 10mm brass than I shot. I shot 100 rounds and picked up 103. :D

While I was on the 100 yard rifle range, I noticed someone in the lane next to me that looked familiar. Turns out it was Tom Beckstrand, a columnist for Guns and Ammo. I struck up a conversation with with him, and next thing I know he is letting me shoot his precision 6.5 Creedmoor rifle. Super nice guy.

Sure glad I decided to go to the range today! :D

I mean in reality it's not horrible. These are ~1-5/8" circles, shot at 50 yards, and I got 13/15 in the circle...but only hit 2 of the bullseye targets. I can just see it so clearly, and hoped I could be more consistent. Possibly/probably do better with a match grade ammo. And the fact I missed low, high, right and left frustrates me even more.

No, I'm not getting to shoot this Sunday. I did not get to shoot last Sunday, either. Last Sunday was the tail end of the hurricane and this Sunday is road closures. Hopefully by next Sunday I'll be able to get to Battery Oaks and sling some lead. I'm itching to shoot and I'm missing Ronnie Sue's desserts, too.

I haven’t been shooting in so long I’m starting to question if I remember how they all work.

The one on right is @Slacker 's gun. It's an SBR with a :
1/4Circle ten lower amd Gibbs side charge upper I believe. I think 5.5" barrel. Has a JP SCS buffer.
Mine is on left. It's a:
Spikes lower with an Aero slick side upper, has Kaw Valley barrel (faxon) and bcg. And taccom 3 stage short stroke buffer. BMiller magwell.

We missed you out at that steel match. Mercado edged me out, grrrr! You need a PCC!!

I have one - actually two. A 8.5" and a 16". Its a mutt gun with some random parts. After I shoot the NC State steel challenge this weekend I may put the 16" up for sale so I can get a factory one - maybe LeadStar or HP's MPX that is for sale. Nothing wrong with mine, just a lower end build.

Well, where were you yesterday? Quit taking yer kids fishing and learn to do important things away from the family!

MPX would be sweet. I feel like mine is pretty low end build, but it isn't holding me back. I feel like performance is the only important factor.
Would probably have a different opinion if my wallet were thicker tho!
